I have a Pug. He is almost 2 years old. With the dog food scare, I don't know what to give him. He is so fat.

I started giving him boiled chicken and rice or potatoes and carrots. Is that what is making him fat?
Answers:
People food can tend to make pugs really fat! I know with the food scare its hard to trust dog food but I'm going to recommend some TOP END dog foods that will help your pug loose weight and wont be affected by the recall:

Canidae:

Innova/California Natural (other dog food on this site):
http://www.naturapet.com

If you want to keep feeding him come cooked chicken this is a dog food where you can mix the cooked chicken with the dog food:

Solid Gold:

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul:

Stay away from Purina, IAMS, Ol' Roy, Kibbles n Bits, Science Diet and Eukanuba .. etc. Those are just like feeding your dogs mcdonalds and will most likely make your pug fat and unhealthy.

Here is a site that explains dog food ingredients:

And also offers some good foods.

Just keep looking for a good quality food that is in your price range. In the end if you buy a 40$ 30lb bag of food, yes its expensive but in the long run you will be spending less on vet bills because your dog will be healthy. And you get less poo w/ a natural dog food :] Cant complain there!

Here is also a list of the top ten dog foods:

Innova
Turkey, Chicken, Chicken Meal, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice,Potatoes, Natural Flavors, Chicken Fat, Herring, Apples, Carrots, Cot... Cheese.

Canidae
Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken.

***Compare those to ANY food you find at wal_mart and it's easy to see what is best for your dog. Neither one contains any byproducts, corn, soy, cheap fillers, or unneeded chemicals and preservatives.

To shed some of that weight remember NO TABLES SCRAPS! And dont over due the treats! Exercise at least 2 times a day for 15-20 minutes (since hes probably out of shape) and then slowly move up to more times a day for longer. Do you have a yard? Fetch is a good way to burn off calories and stay in shape! Plus its a fun game! :]

Hope that helps!
Feed him nutro food its cheap
Cut his dog food down which will not only save you from having to get it often but will also reduce his calorie intake. I would stick to white rice and cottage cheese if you are going to give him any people food. He does sound like he needs a diet and it is possible the people food is giving him too much so decrease the food intake and increase his exercise. Limit treats to 1-2 a day and try feeding him on a fixed schedule. I have seen that dogs who eat freewill have a tendency to be pudgy. Hope this helps a little:>)
Feed him Science Diet or Eukanuba. They are both higher end dog foods.
home cooking is certainly a good option but there are still good dog food companies out there, with a more natural approach. keep in mind that with dog food, u mostly get what u pay for. protiens up the price, grains %26 cheap fillers, lower nutritional value, lowers the price. people food isn't bad for dogs, unhealthy people food is bad for dogs ;) avoid grapes %26 onions %26 chocolate. the net is a great resource,do your homework! dont feed canned food, too mch salt for dogs, but green beans are a good filling option for dogs that are still hungry but u dont want them gaining alot of weight.

LQQK @ ingredients on each dogfood u check out. wheat, corn and soy are common allergens, yet they are in Sooooo many formulas. go to this webiste Only Natural pet food store, for some good options. If u prefer to cook, check out some cookbooks for DOGs and you'll probably need to add supplements to meet their health requirements. their biological make up is very similar to us, 85% so... but they still can't be healthy eating everything we eat. no quick fix, just research it!! Good Luck!
Try Wellness weight management. 1/4 cup, twice a day. This is made from all natural human grade ingredients. Also it is good for dogs with skin/food allergies, which pugs are often prone to have. NO table scraps.
