I have a question for dog owners?

I have worked with dog's my whole life, but this is my first time actually owning a dog. I adopted a 1 year old pit bull 2-3 months ago. I have no idea how much a dog is supposed to shed, so I have a question for you. She started loosing a lot of hair on her back in clumps, and I thought it was something like the beginning of ringworm, but what it ended up looking like a few days later was shedding of a top coat, because a shorter darker coat grew in underneath. Well now she is loosing hair on her neck, again, it comes out easily, and it looks like a shorter coat is growing underneath. But when a dog sheds does it come out in clumps? And does it come out easily? I know it does for german shepherds and huskies..but what about pit bulls? This is probably a silly quesiton, I just have no idea because I have never owned a dog before.

I think all dogs are different. But yea, i have a dog who when she sheds you can pull out clumps. It doesnt go down to the skin or anything but you can get handfulls of fur. My other dog is a lab who blows her coat twice a year and it is crazy. She looks like a mangled mess for a week or two. I think it is fine as long as your not getting bald spots. Also be carefull because pit bulls are known for haveing skin problems, or skin allergies.
Yes it is very common this time of year. My dogs shed in big clumps all the time. If she starts showing bald spots thats when you need to become concerned.
i say yes. i have a st.bernard and that happens to her. just make sure to brush her a couple times a week, though.
No need to worry...just means they are shedding their winter coat and getting ready for the summer heat...But, when you see your dogs hair coming out and clumps and there is skin and no new hair then you need to have the dog checked for mainge(i am not sure if thats how you spell it)...But you have no need to worry...
could be that she's sheding her winter coat.
Well I would just go to a docter to make sure, but my boxer sheds ALOT in the car.
Alot of low end dog foods are zinc deficient and can cause problems like you are seeing. If you rub your hand through the dogs coat and it smells like slightly rancid butter or fat then this is probably the case. I dont know what you are feeding your dog so I cant say for sure. Either way you will be better off in the long run if you feed your dog a super premium type of dog food such as Nutrisource High Performance. With a food like this you will have less stress on your dogs digestive system, less poop to clean up and lower costs overall.
the hair on your pit bull should not be coming out in clumps. there is something medically wrong with your dog i would take her to the vet. to loose some hair and that is normal because pits do shed ,but very little. taking her to vet can ansewer alot of your questions. my pit did the same thing but not in huge clumps. hope this helps.
Yes it is very normal. I have 2 Goldens and so far their shedding has been not to bad. I had a big shed in the fall. I was filling up plastic bags from the grocery store with fur. LOL
Having these dogs for over 30 years it never fails to amaze me how much thay can shed!
There are two types of mange. She needs a skin scraping done to check for the mites. It is treatable, but really difficult to cure one type. Hair loss in clumps is not normal.
Your fine its summer time and all dogs are loosing there under coat right now, depending on the dog it could come out in clump's. My step sister in law has a shar pei and her fur comes out in clumps, go to a pet store or some place to buy a brush that does under coats, Also you could take your dog to a groomer that uses "shed-less" It works wonders!!
Short-haired dogs shed a lot in the spring and summer. You shouldn't worry about her unless she starts to develop bald patches or unless she seems to have a skin irritation. For about $10 you can get a grooming tool called a shedding blade, and for about $6 or $7 you can get a rubber-scrubby brush. You can use the rubber brush to loosen the fur and then use the shedding blade to brush out the loose fur. Go to a pet supply store and ask someone to show you the brushes. If you spend about 15 minutes a couple of times a week grooming her with these brushes, you'll notice a marked decrease in the amount of dog hair in your house!

Try it, it works!
Some breeds shed more than others, and some do shed in clumps. My friend has a Corgi mix, and this time of year, we find little tufts of his hair ALL over the house. Your dog sounds like it is just adapting with the weather in a normal, healthy way. Shedding hair always comes out easily, when you pet the dog, when the dog rolls around on the floor, sometimes even just when the dog runs.
No pit bulls usually don't shed that bad. Pit bulls are considered average shedders, this doesn't sound average. Who ever owned her before must not have taken proper care or her skin and coat. You should bathe her at least once every 2 weeks. After the shedding stops brush her with a rubber dog brush. Do this on a daily basis. Her coat will hardly shed and it will always be glossy after this.
Yes very normal I have all sorts of dogs from minature dashhounds to heelers all of them shed all the time no matter what time of the year it is. From short hair to long. Get you a shed comb and use it often very good after the bath too.
One of my pit bulls is shedding like crazy right now. Just comb or brush her daily outside or in a contained area so it doesn't get all over the place. They are shedding their winter coats. It happens about twice a year with my dogs who live indoors.

Good luck w/ your new pup and remember everything at their eye level is fair game so put away your shoes!
