I have a seven year old dog who barks every time somebody walks in the door of my house?

The dog barks everytime somebody walks into my house. She even barks at people she knows. how can i get her to stop?
She has been doing this since she was a puppy

It's a protective behavoir that can be remedied. When someone comes over, make her sit a few feet away from the door, and do not let her greet the visitor until she is quiet and stays sitting. Then let her go over to greet them. She will soon learn that it is her job to sit and be polite rather than bark and cause a scene.
Oh and the previous answer of it's too late is bull.
A human's learning peak is also in childhood, but are we incapable of learning after age 12? I don't think so. It will just take a little longer. I have potty trained a 10+ year old dog after it was an outdoor dog his whole life, so that is an old wive's tale.
We had the same problem we couldn't even have friends over. We tried a shock collar at low intensity it has worked well we now just show the collar to our dog and she stops barking.
dogs are territorial and possesive and barking is a natural way to ask ppl to stay off limits...and jus coz she knows someone doesnt mean she will let them step in so easily.and u r dog is too old for it to be rectified coz a dogs learning peak is between 5 months and 2 and half years.so mebbe u shud jus lock her up in a room or tie her up when someone comes in and then let her loose once they are in the house..
well i had the same problem with my great pyrense, she always barked and it got so annoying get a shock collar and every time she barks it will let her know. or if you dont like useing shock collars go to petsmart or some other pet store and get a spray collar wich everytime your dog barks it will spray some water in its face it can be cute to watch though, or you can use discipline like everytime she barks put her outside or go and put her in the crate and say no bad dog, hope this helps good luck
Is this usually at night. Because, if it is, it could be that it is night blind and cannot see a rat's rear end! Or it could just be blind period. Try getting it to the animal hospital
Your dog needs to learn its "sit stay" and "down stay" commands. The dog believes it is the homeowner. You need a friend to practice training with the dog so she can learn the appropriate response to visitors. She needs to take your command.
Unfortunately you have let the problem go on so long it will be hard to stop.

You should have trained her correctly when she was a pup by having her "SIT" and pay attention to YOU when people enter the home (obedience lessons are wonderful)
You can get a water spray bottle and when she barks give her a quick squirt in the face (only until she stops barking). Reward her when she is quiet. Practice this with a friend if you can, have the dog on a leash.

DO NOT spray her when she has stopped barking!!!
this is exactly how the expensive electric collars work - but is less cruel and cheaper.. you can buy spray collars that do this too.
Boy.. it's much more difficult since you haven't trained her to not do this in 7 yeas since she was a pup.

You didn't say if she's a chihuahua. If she is, you may not be able to train her out of it. Really small dogs are insecure and bark a lot at people like that.

You can try what my neighbor and I do when I visit her and her chihuahua barks at me. One of us picks up the dog and I hold the dog. She's fine when I'm holding and petting her. Sometimes this will stop the dog.

You may want to get a dog training video. There are dog training video websites and they have training on several things.

Another thing is to try to train her to "use your inside voice" which is a very tiny bark.

They also do have a no-bark collar you can buy and use to train your dog. You'll want to read up on it to see if you're comfortable working with it.

Check out the book at Amazon by the Dog Whisperer, a noted dog trainer.
its their way of saying stranger in or around the house %26 they are only trying to proctect the house %26 you.. as long as their not biting then there really is not much you can do
we have 2 dogs who bark as well but they do quiet down once they realize no one is trying to hurt us.
MABYE IT DOESNT LIKE STANGERS IN ITS HOUSE OR IT IS JUST TRYING TO GET ATTENTION
