I have a Shih Tzu and wondered if it's ok to trim his nails myself, and What is a dew claw?

I know I should probably get them done professionally, but am not really in that position to do so right now. There are all kinds of info on trimming nails, is that really ok? If you know how to do it. And I have NO idea what a dew claw even is.
Answers:
Pet co charges $8 - $10 to do nails. The dew claw is kinda where the thumb would be on the inside of the leg.

To all of you saying to do it your self and have styptic handy.

If you quick(make the nail bleed) a dog too many times by practicing how to cut nails right, eventually the dog WILL NOT let you cut the nails any more with out a fight or biting. This is when most people realize they need the groomer. Then the groomer has to go through all of the BS with your dog. And I have even seen dogs that needed sedation to have the nails done at the vet.

If you are not sure how to do nails PLEASE let some one who does do them.
you can trim them yourself
i use a pet scissor (I really dont like the trimmer with that looks like a hole punch) toenail clippers work well too

cut after the quick (the pink part inside the nail bed) leave some space after the quick because the quick is covered in a clear layer that still has nerves.

if your'e nervous, cut it a little conservative until you are comfortable. If the dog screams you cut it too short, if it bleeds you can use a styptic pencil

the dew claw needs to be trimmed regularly if your dog has one. it may have been removed by the breeder. it is found on the back of the dog's "wrist"

if your dog is squirmish, try trimming the nails when it's sleeping (if its a sound sleeper)
You can trim them yourself, just take the tips off, this often makes them sharper so you might want to use an emery board afterwards.
There are some good tips here:

Dew claws are those things that look like a thumb, along the inside of the leg above the paw, often they are removed right after the pups are born.
Hey there. Yes, it's fine to trim your dog's nails yourself. As you've seen, you want to be careful to give lots of great treats when you trim, so that your dog doesn't become upset with you. Taking the extra time now to get him used to nail-trim time will make him happy to comply!
a dew claw is the extra nail that usuall just flaps around so dogs do not even have them. and yes you can clip your own dogs nails
Yup, you can do it yourself, just have siptic (sic?) powder on hand in case you hit the quik (sic- agian). You need to take just a bit off the tip, as hitting the quik can result in pain, bleeding. and infection. The dewclaw needs to be trimmed as well with the same precautions, it is the weird little digit that is higher up from the paw- not all dogs have them, some vets remove them. There are great clippers that you can buy that have a stopper on the other side so that you don't put the claw too far into the cutting apparatus. You may need a helper to get the dog to stay still. Best of luck!
A dewclaw is a vestigial digit of the paw of many mammals, birds, and reptiles. It grows higher on the leg so that in digitigrade species, when the animal is standing, it does not make contact with the ground. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/dewclaw)...
If it doesn't bother the dog, just clip it, don't remove it.

You can get clippers from most petshops, and it's really quite simple as long as you cut it in a straight line accross the nail and void going too high thereby going into the flesh or quick of the nail. If your dog gets nervous, put a towel over his her head to calm them down. It should take just a few minutes and then it's a big fuss and "what a good dog".
I trim our dogs' nails all the time if the nails are clear there will be a line in the nail that is a blood line you have to be carefull not to cut to short because they will bleed and is very hard to stop if you don't have something to cartorize, or stop the bleeding. If the nails are dark you won't be able to see the blood line, just do a quick trim not too short a few times to get use to it,and by all means get dog nail clippers, they are sharper and safer then our nail clippers. A dew claw is a claw above the paw on the left inside and it curls in. They reason it's called a dew claw is it doesn't (do) anything or serve any purpose, should have been called a dewnot claw. Many people have them removed when puppies are very young especially in bigger breed dogs, becauses as they get older the dew claw grows large and tends to snag things, and cause discomfort. They don't usually remove them in adult dogs because it then becomes a lengthy surgery. Hope this helps.
