I have a puppy trained on potty pads how do I get him to tell me when he needs to go outside?

He has the potty pads down pack...but I think I want to him to start telling me when he needs to go out instead of on the pad...
Answers:
Start to get him on a schedule-- your schedule-- so that you tell him when to go and not the other way around. Take him out first thing in the morning when you wake up, and you can even put the peepad on the spot outside where you want him to go. He'll pick up the scent of the pad and once he goes in the right spot, you should praise him. Eventually you can let him out without the pad, and he'll go on the same spot.
put the potty pads right outside the door or behind something he can't get it so he will have to get your attention then take it from there.
What I did was just ask him when he usually goes to the bathroom if he wants to go outside. Do this lots of times throughout the day and when he goes to the bathroom outside give him a treat so he knows its good to do that. After a while he will learn what outside means and when he has to go to the bathroom he will prance around the door and you know what he wants. This is what we did with my dog and now he knows what outside is and always wants to go out. Now if we even spell out out he knows what your talking about.
You are already spoiling this for him...the best way to potty train is for YOU, yes YOU to carry him outside every hour and a half, put him down and say go potty...when he succeeds pick him up and say good potty very cheerfully and playfully and go back inside...he will get he message...oh and this means at night even when YOU are asleep...have him sleep with you on the inside by the wall and when you feel him moving around its TIME..get up and go out...when they are asleep, they wake up cause they have to go...just like you...
this method is faster, cheaper, logical, and your dog will love it...remember its not the dog thats in training it YOU...the dog cant say anything he must learn what behavior YOU expect from him. Very, very soon he will just go to the door when he needs to go.all our dogs are trained this way and withing three to four weeks the problem is complete.
Your going to have to keep your eye on him. He (or she) will give subtle indications when it's going to go, and of course make for the pads. Pick the puppy up (even if it's started to go) and carry it outside to "its spot". When it starts to getting around to going in that spot, praise it highly, and give it a good petting. You did not say how old the puppy is. Most dogs are practically untrainable until they are several months old.
Start gradually working the pad towards the door until it is eventually out the door. Your dog should get the idea that that is where she is supposed to go to the bathroom. Also rewarding her with a treat when she does go to the bathroom is a good incentive and will want her to keep doing good. She'll learn, she has a good owner to help her.
If you haven't already then start moving the pads to make a "doormat" at the door you want to use. Let him adjust to that location for a bit. Then start trying to catch him at the door and go on outside. Now you have to go with him. You can't just stick the pup out there and expect it to know what you want.

Allow plenty of play and run time to get things moving. When he does his business then you gotta do the happy happy praise dance!! Use the same words for the event so he will put the word with the action that makes you so happy/maybe a treat. Pups need to play and potty several times per outing so don't rush things. Pups can't hold much and go often so keep pads down in case.

Once he gets the idea of outside then he will start letting you know by whining. barking or dancing around near the door. Be alert! We have young pups raising a fuss not wanting to go in the crate on their pads at 7-8 wks. Dogs live to please their person.
First you should move the pads closer to the door. After that move them outside he will want to go outside and use them. Once he learns to go outside and use the bathroom remove the pads altogether. Remember every time he goes where you want him to go praise him and make sure he understands and knows that he did a good job.
This worked for me..start moving the pads closer to the door and finally just outside the door and to the grass..once you know the puppy is using the yard and not the pad, remove the pad.
Good luck
