I just came home and found my dog dead! what should i do? i dont know what happen help!!!!!?

Answers:
Bury it.
Sorry for your loss.
Sorry about your pet.

Take him to the vet - the vet can arrange for cremation if you wish and may be able to tell you why your dog died.
i'm sorry. i had that happen with my cat a few years back. i called my parents all crying and stuff. i put him in the trunk of the car, and drove the hour to my parents house, and we buried him in the back yard. well, my dad did... i was too upset to do it. again, i'm so sorry about that.
Call your dog's veterinarian, and ask if they have services for cremation, or you can just bury your dog in your backyard (it has to be on your personal property!). Your vet can also preform a necropsy (autopsy for animals) to determine the cause of death. I'm very sorry for your loss.
Might've been hypoglycemic shock.

Hypoglycemic shock, happens when a dog's blood sugar falls too low. This will result in death. If left alone for too long (6+ hours) without food, dogs (especially smaller ones) are prone to this.

It could also be other things. Poisoning? Overheating? Choking? It's hard to say since you have no other details.

Sorry for your loss. :(
First call your mom and dad and tell them that your dog is dead!! What are you doin asking a question like this??!!??!!

OMMFG! Call your mom and dad already you shouldn't be reading the rest of this message!!

R.I.P. doggy!!!

CALL YOU MOM AND DAD ALREADY!!!!!!!
Thats sad. Sorry. It may have choked on something while you were gone
go to the vet, tell them what happened, and ask for an necropsy to find out what happened

Sorry For Your Loss,
Have a nice day!
Call your Vet ASAP, they always have an emergency number especially with it being on Sunday. Was this very unexpected or was he/she sick or old? Yes, I am sorry also for your loss...it's just like losing a child!!
i'm sorry for your loss, but do what everyone else wrote, take him to the vet for a proper cremation or something like that, unless you wanna bury it yourself, again i'm sorry, i hate it when that happens
Did he get any of the dog foods on the list of bad ones in the recent pet poisonings? Is there anything else around the house he could have eaten? Other than checking these things out the only other thing is an autopsy and they are very expensive.

I'm really sorry this happened and I hope you can find out what happened.
That happened to me only I have bunnies. I was really sad and cried a lot. I still miss them and I act like they are still with me and they are always in my heart!
take him to the emergency vet as they can take care of that for you. you can't keep the dog in the house until tomorrow as the body will really smell especially since it's warm out. once there dead the body starts decaying and you don't want that smell in your house. take it to the emergency vet as soon as you can. sorry about your dog.
I am so sorry! Was he old? He might of died of low blood shugar, choking, overheating, ect... what every body else said. I am so sorry you should take him to the vet to see how he died. I am so sorry my dog died today too of a sesure. Sorry, it will be ok. I am sure he was a good friend while he was still with us. May he go to heaven!

I just bought my second chihuahua and i need to know what im doing wrong with the potty training thing.?

im doing it by the book. im crate training her. i come home to take her potty every three hours but she still poops and pees in her crate. i thought dogs don't wont to go were they sleep. what should i do? any suggestions?
Answers:
Hello...if she's a puppy, accidents are gonna happen %26 the crate has to be SMALL..the smallest they make, if that don't do it...block half the crate so she only has room to turn, stand %26 stretch ( that's all they need %26 really prefer, dogs are nesters- close quarters don't bother them, also feeding schedules are a must, 15 minutes down, then up till the next feeding time ..and so you know, some chi's never completey potty train well, some even use litter boxes ...just never use clumping litter around dogs !! It's not about their size or bladder sizes either, just how some little dogs can be, they prefer to train their owners rather then be trained LOL ..little puppys like chi's etc do need water @ least 3 times a day !!! Take Care :) I do have more detailed details on my 360 as well, just to me their too big for Answer posts...Take Care :)
How old is the dog? At 8 weeks they may need to go every 2 hours. If the crate is too large they will go in it. Talk with the breeder.
that happend to me too.
Their small body parts makes them have a big need to go to the bathroom more than other dogs because they have small capacity in their bladder or intestines.
You may need to do it every one or two hours, because they will do anything to get the waste out of their bodies, even if they have to get it into their beds.
honestly crate training a dog is not the best way to do it they have little doggy pee pads and if you get those (you can get them at target, wal-mart,dollar store) they sometimes use them and if you set there and tell them you go pee pee here sometimes the will listen and also get them some treats so that when the do use the pad they will relies that if the go on the pee pad the its a good thing and they wont get in trouble. Some times they don't like the feel of the pad so put some news paper on it which some you can get for free this has worked for my dog and it should work for you if not then call your vet for help
I have a 10 year old chihuahua that still potties in her kennel. As long as I'm home she tells me she needs to go out and never messes in the floor, but when we leave I put her in her kennel and she does it every time. I've tried leaving her in the utility room with plenty of food and water when we had to be gone overnight and she didn't eat, drink, or potty. They are strange little dogs and I, like you, thought they wouldn't do their business where they sleep, but I guess we were wrong. I'm anxious to see other answers to this question because I'm willing to try ANYTHING to make my dog change her evil ways!
How old is she? General rule of thumb is 3 months=3 hours of hold it, 4 hours at 4 months and so on.
Could be the crate is too large as well.
How old is the dog? Dog's don't normally go where they sleep.. But if they are young and can't hold it, or are being left so long that it's just impossible not to go, they will in fact go...
It's important to know how old she is, cause that makes a difference.. I mean if she is 8 weeks old, then perhaps you need to get home every 2 hours.. WHen I am housetraining puppies, I put them outside every 1/2 hour so that they have tons of opportunity to be out and tons of chances for me to praise them for doing the good thing. Maybe she is just too young and every 3 hours isn't good enough. Maybe you need to have someone come in every 2 hours or 1 1/2 hours to let her out.
You can't allow her to keep going in the crate, cause eventually she won't care about messing where she sleeps. Right now she likely feels horrible doing it and tries hard not to.. If she is forced to go in there too much, it will become normal for her and she won't bother trying to hold it.
Leaving a puppy or dog in a crate while you are gone is not a good idea. If the poor dog has to go, it will no matter what. They can only hold it so long. Only use the crate when you are there and can let the dog out when he/she gets restless. That way they will learn to tell you they have to go out. The best and only way that I have found to potty train a dog is to use a gate or something the dog can not get over or around. Block the dog into a small area with flooring (not carpet) maybe a bathroom, put down "pee pads" that can be bought everywhere. They really do work. The dog will choose to go on the pads because they don't like urine splashed on their legs. Keep the area the same and the pads in the same place. The dog will go to the same area consistently over several months time. This takes the longest period of time, be patient. After at least 6 months you can move the pads to another area closer to the outside or outside. Keep a pad in the same area just in case. Try to catch the pup or dog in the act and redirect them to the outside or yard where you want them to go. This won't take long to do since they are already trained to go in one spot. Be sure to praise, praise, praise, so he/she knows that what they are doing is the right thing. It will pay off. You have to be consistent. Don't by any means let the dog have the run of the house because you are asking for accidents, and you will never get the poor dog potty trained. The best training is to prevent accidents before they happen. The poor animal does not know when you hit them, or punish them what they have done wrong, so please don't hit the dog. You can scold him/her if you catch them in the act, but do it immediately, not a few seconds later. The animal forgets quickly. They will only learn to be afraid of you if you hit them. They are only doing what comes naturally and can't figure out why you keep hitting him/her. So please, praise, praise, praise. That's when you get results. When you catch them in the act, immediately yell "NO". This will let him/her know that what they are doing is wrong. Immediately take them to the correct place to potty. Be consistent, and patient. It will pay off.

I just bought a silent dog whistle but dont know how to use it?

i tried it out on her and different levels and she didnt seem to care. am i doing something wrong?
Answers:
when you blow the whistle you need to call your dog by her name straight after and then that way she will associate the whistle with you wanting her to come at the moment she doesn't know what you want give it a try for a couple of days calling her name after you have blown the whistle then the next week try blowing the whistle without calling her name and see if she comes to you if she doesn't just keep calling her name for a while and then using the whistle on its own again she will soon catch on especially if you reward her after she comes to you
She is probably wondering why you are blowing a whistle? What do you want her to do?!
Probably not. Dogs are a lot like people in some respects. They are each different. Therefore, your dog may respond to different pitches that the whistle makes where another dog may not. For example, your neighbor's dog might respond to a very high pitch sound. Your dog, though, may respond to a relatively low pitch sound. You might consider trying different pitches with your dog and continue being patient because if your dog is not used to hearing a whistle it may take time for him/her to realize that he/she is being called. Hope this helps.

I just bought a boxer puppy what should I name it??

It's all white and I would like it to start with an A. Its a male as well
Answers:
Avalanche... because he's all white, like snow.
Rocky!! :-) or...Balboa??Bally? Boey? haha thats cute...I think I might use that if we ever get a boxer!
how about andy
How about Ace!
Rocky or Brandy.
You should wait to see what his personality is like, and go from there.
Names are so personal. You'll have to live with it for the rest of the dog's life.

Don't you want to give him his name?

You have a good start saying you want it to start with an A.

what is his personality? Is he creative- name him Art. is he a "I will Rule you!" type? Name him Alexander the great

try something unique. names most people won't have...

Arik (Ah-rick) is a unique way to spell Eric

Akira means bright, intelligent in Japanese.
Ayodele is African for "Joy has come"
Apolinar is Spanish for "Destroyer"

But it should be up to you, not us. After all- you have to live with the final decision. ^_^

best of luck to you and your new pup

(Search on google for boys names in different languages- Japanese male names, spanish male names, Irish male names- so on.)
Arch bishop
byno (for Albino)
Artic
Arthur
Andy
Artie
Apollo
Apple
Astor
Artemis
What about Ali? Your dog's a boxer, and u want a name with A, so why not? I like it :]
Well, since he's a boxer...how about Ali or Apollo (for Apollo Creed in the Rocky movie)?
Atticus
I like Buster
For a white male boxer? How about Adonis, Arris, or Arnold?
you should name it jake, jonathan,or tyl!

good luck!
How about Casper?
I know these aren't A names but with my experience with my own boxers and the stories I've heard from owners of our puppies...the best names for boxers are:

MOVE
GET OUT OF THE WAY
HURRY UP
COME ON

These are best as when your pup reaches about 2 years old you will be walking behind him all the time shouting the above suggested names!
astor will be the best i suppose

I just adopted a Westie and he is being finicky about eating, why?

He will only eat if I bring his bowl to him and he goes to his water bowl only sparingly, as if he doesn't know either exist. Is this due to the location change, nervousness in a new environment, or something else?
Answers:
Don't carry his bowl to him. Give him a day or two to settle and of course take him to the vet right away for a checkup. Make sure he's not running a fever and doesn't have any dental problems. Did you find out what he'd been eating. If not the vet can sell you canned food that is hard to resist, to get him eating at first, then you can reduce the canned and go to totally dry.

He probably is nervous. I crate train my dogs and feed my dogs in their crates twice a day. I don't leave food down.

Skipping food for a day or two won't hurt him. The vet can tell you if there is any physical reason for him to be off food.

Feed on a schedule and pick up the food after 15-20 minutes twice a day. Much easier to housebreak that way also.

If he's submissive then he may not want to eat in front of you. Put the food down and walk away. Feed in the same place each time. Rescued dogs love routine.

Also take him for walks so he's had exercise and will feel more hungry. Unless he is looking ill.

Google Nothing In Life is Free.he may be acting quiet now, but once he is settles Westies can become very bossy.
You're write to think that his finicky eating habits are caused by location change and nervousness in environment. Don't worry about it. He's probably just adjusting to his new home. He will eventually get used to the place and warm up to you. I would only be concerned if this behavior lasted for a long time. If you have any concerns, call your dog's vet. It's free, and convenient! Good Luck! and congrats on adopting your new dog!
Do not start anything you don't want to do for the rest of the dog's life- i.e., carrying his food to him. Dogs will eat when they are hungry. He is nervous and confused. Confine him to one room in the house with food, water, toys, and a bed, and keep him there for a week or two. He will eat. Don't cater to him, don't change his foods or offer lots of treats, don't do any of that. Put down a bowl of food and leave him be. He'll be fine.
I would think it is because of all the new things it is having to deal with.
Dogs can become very nervous at times

Just think about this poor dog!! Its family gave it away?? It has to really feel bad.

Give this poor dog lots of love and attention it will come around.
It is scared and not sure what to expect!! It will come around once it finds out it has a good home
Good Luck
First. WESTIES ARE AWSOME! They are rockin. And when I bought mine he didnt eat for several days. Now he only eats Ceaser in cans. Maybe you should contact a vet or just try waiting. Dont ever move his bowl. If he doesnt eat for several hours take HIM to the BOWL not the bowl to him. Thats what our vet suggested.
We rescue dogs in Michigan and see this often. There's several things that could cause this, first off you need to establish that you are in charge and that if he wants to eat he will have to come to his bowl. He's training you to bring him food, you must teach him that when you fill his bowl he better come and eat. You should allow him about 15 to 20 min to eat if he choose not too, pick up his bowl and don't put it back down until it's time for the next feeding, it's tough but he will eat when he get's hungry. Your correct about the other reasons, they all come into play when changing environment , food types or stress...all could effect his eating. You should also have him checked for worms..this could bother his appetite as well.
Did you change his diet or anything?? Sometimes change of environment will make them nervous or uncomfortable..
Good Luck
I believe it is due to all the things you mentioned. I wouldn't worry about it unless it goes one for more than a two or three days.

Are you feeding him the same food he was getting before? If not, you need to introduce him to the new food very slowly. Just start with the food he was eating and add some of the new each day over a week's time.

If your dog doesn't like the food, try him on another. But be carefull not to buy one of the commercial foods that have been recalled.

I just adopted a female newfoundland. is there anything i should know?

this is pretty much what she looks like

http://www.pupcity.com/images/adpics/052...
Answers:
Yes and the rescue or shelter you "adopted" her from should have gone through this thoroughly before allowing you to take her.
awww i LOVE newfoundlands, they are beautiful.

Things you should know - they are susceptable to several major health problems that ensure their life expectancy isnt long - around 9 years.

This includes cancer, heart problems and bloat.
They typically die of cancer.

take her to the vet for a GOOD physical every year and keep a very close eye on her health.
feed her two or three smaller meals instead of one big meal per day to avoid bloat.
.
YES!!! They are the best dogs! Congratulations!!! How exciting! I do have a few pieces of advise for you:
1) Get a drool towel, no explanation needed :)
2) Purchase a hard plastic kidde pool, she will LOVE it!
3) Brush her every day if you have time, if not do it as often as you can!! Your life will be a whole lot easier with less fur floating around the house!
4) Remember that her coat is waterproof and very thick, so it is very important for you to keep her cool when it is warm outside (sprinkles, kiddie pool, lots of water availiable)
5) Be careful and educated about Bloat (gastric tortion): no exercise OR water for 30 minutes before eating, feed small frequent meals (3 times a day is ideal!) throughout th day, and NO water or exercise for an hour after eating! Very important!
6) Enjoy every single day with her! Newfies are amazing!!

Good luck!
Thank-you for adopting a dog and saving a life!

Newfies are wonderful dogs. I suggest daily brushing. Regular walks. Most Newfoundlands love swimming, so if you have access to a lake, maybe that's something you'd like to try. Mine like swimming with me.

Congratulations on your new dog!

I just adoppted a 8 yr old lhasa apso from humane socieoty?

And have not had a chance to take it to the vet yet. But it has mole looking things all up and down its back does any one know if they are mole or what it is? Nd some are black and some are skin colored. do dogs get moles?
Answers:
That was very kind of you to adopt this dog.

I adopted a six year old Lhasa who had skin conditions as well as growths. Most growths are benign but it is important you get them checked out by your vet on your dogs wellness check.

This is a fabulous breed of dog. I know you will enjoy having him as part ofy our family.
they might.i think they do sometimes my grandma's dog has a couple. although they could also be tumors/abscesses. so get her checked as soon as possible.
Its probably just skin tags, kind of like moles, small dogs and older dogs can be prone to them. Just keep an eye on them and mention them to the vet when you go.
first of all congrats on giving him a chance on life, not many dogs get the chance of a better life after being dumped by their owners. most get put down!!! yes dogs do get moles just like humans, take him to the vet if your worried, as it might become infected if scratched,(they might even remove them if its in a bad spot), and it will be good for you to know if the dog is healthy of not!! i hope he brings you happiness!
Remember he is eight yrs. old, so he is not in the prime of his life anymore. Wish i could be of more help. GREAT
for you for adopting a animal from the shelter!
I'm sure he will make a wonderful pet.
Good luck
Kudos to your from adopting your dog from the hmane society!!!!

I intend to start showing my dog...?

In august at a local show. I also intend to be the one -to- show him. We'll also start doing obediance trials (at chetco's suggestion, actually. Thanks, chetco!).

My question is: Anyone know of a really nice website that has beginner-based lists of things to bring? Lingo? Etc? I know some here and there, but somewhere to start and extend my knowledge within the next few months would be lovely.

Links are awesome. Thank you!
Answers:
The best thing you can do is visit several shows and talk to / befriend other people that show that are willing to show you the ropes and teach you the lingo.
It might be a good idea for you to join a Yahoo group of show people in your breed. I know there is a group for show beagles, etc. There will be people there who have VAST experience in showing your breed and will be happy to help you with advice.

Google to find your local all breed conformation club...see if they offer handling classes.

Also look for your breed's local club, see if any of the members might give you tips on how to show your breed.

If you bought your dog from a good breeder, talk to your dog's breeder. If they aren't local, see if they can recommend anyone in your area to mentor you.

There are good books on showing dogs also, as well as videos.

Try to find a fun match...it's much more forgiving than a show and a great place to practice.

You did not mention your breed, so any tips I have are general.
I don't know about web sites, but here are two books I'd recommend:

Dog Showing for Beginners, by Lynn Hall (Howell Book House)
Show Me! by D. Caroline Coile (Barron's)

Good luck at the shows. Maybe I'll see you there someday.

Also - go to dog shows, hang out.
1 great way is start out in UKC -http://www.ukcdogs.com/

Dog shows are fun! Good for you.

Start taking your dog to "handling class" so that you both know what to expect. Handling class will simulate what your class will be like.
(This is for showing Conformation)

I would go to the Great Dane Club website and find your local club. They should be able to help you.

Obedience is a BLAST!!
Make sure you train with a "real" dog trainer and not a click and treat-retail pet store "trainer". Remember you want your dog to bond with you and not his stomach.

Visit the following websites
It would be helpful to know what you are showing in...are you showing in conformation, obedience, rallly?
What to bring depends on what you will be showing in as well as how you should dress.

There are Dane Clubs down in your area and a lot of Dane owners down that way that show.

I show Danes in all 3 events.
I used to show danes in juniors, I'd love to help. Any specific questions? Go to groups.yahoo.com, there are several groups relating to dog shows. A lot of beginners are on these groups, and it a great way to meet people, I moderate groups: AKCDogShow, and Show Me, there's also Show Dogs, and several others. You can see my pictures at photos.yahoo.com/cosmo_chica, under dog shows. I showed danes in juniors, and eventually moved into sporting breeds-english setters.

I how can i stop my dog from peeing inside the house.?

i got my dog when he was 2yrs. He is a black pomeranian and he is always peeing inside the house, the bad part is my house is all white we had to change the carpet because it was that bad and now is starting to mess up the new tile we installed. Please someone help
Answers:
I had the same problem when I adopted a male neutered pom. He marked on table legs, laundry baskets, etc. I finally bought some belly bands and made him wear them when I couldn't watch him. I bought four of them so I could keep changing and washing them regularly. He only had to wear them a couple of weeks, and then he stopped marking in the house. You can get them at just about any pet supply store such as Petsmart, Petco, or do an online search. They worked for us.
Have you tried on working a little harder at the potty training? Maybe the dog has issues or a health problem. If the dog is persisting in doing this, I would consider getting him checked out to make sure there isn't a bladder infection. Good Luck
I haven't figured that one out yet either, I am considering a tone/shock collar. What I've learned about those are you can only use it if you catch them in the act. If you do it after the fact they don't understand why there being zapped (so to speak)

At least you have a little dog making little puddles, I have a male Rott who is making small pools at the bottom of anything he can lift his leg up on :o(
ammonia
well just shove his nose in it and then tell him NO.
Try to housebreak your dog. Don't punish it but teach with a gift called treats. If he makes a mistake than correct it calmly. That should work well. If not got to this link. see the Housebreaking word and beside it click video. It shoud give you a new window with a video in it and watch the video to learn more.
Click this: http://us.iams.com/iams/en_us/jsp/smart_...

Before that click the blue bone collar that says Training tools and then see the Housebreaking word, and beside it click video. It shoud give you a new window with a video in it and watch the video to learn more.
Hope this helps.

I hope he won't die!?!?!?!?

My dog has a tick near is shoulder area on his back...It has a white dot on the tick...Im hoping its not deer tick wat kind is it?

Is it okay to use frontline plus when the dog has a tick on it...and what should i do to stop it...Im only 13 and i dont know much about ticks!!
Answers:
get a pair of tweezers and grip the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull it out.

you need to make sure you get its head out too. make sure it hasnt broken off the body - if it has, get it out of the dog - if you cant, get someone else to help or get a vet. you must get it out immediately.

yes, its safe to put frontline on him.. make sure it is the right dose.

you need to remove the tick immediately... and over the next week, watch your dog to see if he looks sick or doesn anything unusual like throws up or gets weak
- if he does, take him to a VET right away.
.
Call your local vet. ASAP and ask them, or find some tweezers and pull the tick out now!
Did you get the tick off of your dog? Watch the spot for signs of infection.

I live in a very rural area and my dogs get ticks all of the time and do not get sick. If you are worried about it you can take your dog to the vet and they can do a blood test to test for Lyme. Then you can get him a vaccination for the Lyme and rest a little easier.
Get the tick out. Put peroxide on a Q tip and get it on the tick. Then pull the tick out with tweezers. The peroxide will prevent the tick from burrowing in farther/make them pull out.

You can put frontline on the dog on their next most certainly, but don't let that tick stay there!!!
First, do NOT post your age on here. Do not ask personal questions either. Your dog needs veterinarian help, and you shouldn't be expecting to do something about it. Don't go to PetQnA.com s, just ask your parents. They will get your pet to the vet on time. Ticks can come to you to on your head because they spread from dogs and cats. Get your dog to the vet!!! You can't do much to stop it. Only a doctor knows how to extract the tick.
Put on the frontline %26 it will kill the tick plus protect him in case he's around any more. After the tick is dead, pull it out %26 flush it. If your dog starts to run a fever or acting achy %26 tired, you'll need to have him seen by the vet to be sure he hasn't contracted lyme disease.
You're taking very good care of him, keep it up. He'll be a friend for a long time.
First you have to take the tick off the dog. You can use twezers to pull the tick off and then dispose of it. I usually flush it down the toilet. First you ahve to get the tweezer very clost to the ticks head and right next to the dogs skin. Pull the tick out with a straight motion. Then flush it. Put a dab of antibiotic cream on the spot where the tick was.
This is the quickest and safest way to remove a tick.
You need to have it removed ASAP! Is your dog up on all his shots. Your best bet is taking him to the vet. You can remove it yourself, but since you have never done it I don't recommend it. If any of the tick stays inside your dog your dog, can get very sick and die. Talk to your parents and let them know.
As long as you haven't used Frontline in the past 3 weeks (that's what my vet says) it will be OK. Most pet stores and vets sell a little thing called a tick puller. I use one because Frontline takes at least 24 hours to kill the tick. Keep an eye on your dog for limping, weakness, etc. Lyme disease can be treated, but you'd need to get him to the vet as soon as the symptoms show up. I'm glad you're concerned. You're a good pet owner.
Have your parents remove the tick. It's not a big deal.Remove it before your parents apply Front line. You your self should do nothing more than tell your parents what you found. The dog won't die.He may get Lyme's Disease though. It sounds like a Dog tick opposed to a Deer Tick. Deer ticks are very very small and chances are that you would not have seen it.But ALL ticks carry Lyme.Have your pet checked for Lyme @ 4 weeks from finding the tick and then retest (If it was Neg. the first time.)
Take him to see the vet. You need to go there to get the Frontline anyway.

I heard yellow lab puppies with pink noses are to be avoided, any truth behind this?

Answers:
Any lab with a thoroughly pink nose or one lacking in pigment is disqualified according to AKC standards. I'm not telling you not to get one, but definitely do not breed one. The lack of pigment in their nose is a sign of a mutated gene. Which means, that there is a good chance that there are more mutated genes.
Example: White Schnauzer -there are many of them out there that are perfectly fine dogs. But the ones that I have met have been aggressive. And, their puppies have been worse.
Any time the AKC (or anyone who has expertise with a particular breed) avoids a particular trait, they have a good reason for it.
That sounds like a myth. Only thing I can think of is sunburn in the summer?
I've never heard that before. I looked it up and it seems that's just a rule for dog shows.
The noses should be dark but some breeds (such as labs and goldens) have dark noses that will fade to a somewhat pinkish-brown color during the cold winter months. They darken again in summer. That is OK. See the breed standard below. A fully pink nose is a disqualification.
We had a yellow lab with a pink nose and had no problems except to be careful the dogs nose didn't get sunburned. :) I think the only reason to avoid a lab with a pink nose is if you plan on showing the dog at dog shows. They have strict rules on how a dog being shown should look.
Loss of pigment is in no way a health risk as far as I know. They do need to have care taken in the summer months so they dont get a sun burn but other than that No I have never hear to avoid them.
NOTE: This does mean that it is a major fault and is a disqualification for showing. For a pet it is just fine.
Well, that depends. If you're planning on getting a Yellow Lab to show it in conformation (dog shows), then you should not get a puppy that has a pink nose - it's a disqualification at shows.

However, that applies only to true "pink" noses. Some Lab noses are a brownish color called "liver", and some Labs' noses also tend to fade toward liver as they get older. While liver is considered a fault, it's not a disqualification.

If you want the puppy as a companion and don't plan on showing, there's nothing wrong with a pink nose!

Woodhaven Labs has a great website about pigmentation in Labradords - http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/yellow-pigm... - that is very informative.
Not something that'll affect a dog as a pet, but one of the persnickety things the look for in the show ring is a dark nose- an all pink one is a disqualification. BUT may yellow labs have a pink patch's and this can even vary with season - my brothers was dark in summer and faded in winter (same dog each season).
It is a fault according to the breed standard. For a pet it does not matter. But if you are looking at puppies to buy, try to educate yourself so you know how to find a good breeder.
And find a puppy that will grow up to be a healthy dog.

If you want a dog to show, then buy from a member of the National and local Labrador Retriever club. And learn what questions to ask before you go see puppies.

dog is lacking good pigment,, if you just want a pet and do not intend to show the dog.. don't worry about the lack of pigment.. just a poor breeding...

You must be talking about George, the Jack Russell Terrier. What a brave little guy. This is typical of JRTs. It happened in New Zealand. Imagine how horrible for your children to see their pet torn to shredds.Horrible.
This dog was a true hero.
Thanks for sharing the information

I have two teacup chihuahua's that are mostly white with some tan markings.?

I want to temporarily "dye" their hair pink. What can I use that is completely non-toxic and wont irritate their skin in any way?
Answers:
Kool-Aid ...mixed with water in a spray bottle, lots of people seem to do this with their dogs ..or some vege juices like beet, carrot, blue berries.. things like that, for making some vege or fruit juices, you can grind them, bring to boil %26 gently simmer them for a 10 minutes or so, put a lid in, let them sit %26 cool overnite, strain %26 add to a spray bottle ..also plain old yellow mustard mixed with water so it can be used as a spray as well...fair warning tho, it can make a mess out of furniture %26 stain them 4 ever ... won't the dogs, but it will stain furniture %26 clothes...Take Care :)
If you really have to do this I have heard food colouring will work.
unsweetened Kool Aid
Ask your Vet. He should know the safest way!
You can buy the rinse at the beauty salon that will rinse out after a bath, you just put it on and let dry.
go to a dog hair stylist or petco or something and ask them
you are kidding right ? why in the world would you want to do this for ? I would shudder at the thought of someone doing that to my 2 chihuahuas . I also foster chihuahuas and I cannot believe someone would actually want to do this . good luck .

I have two shih tzu's a male and female I saw them mating. But they are brother and sister what do i do?

Answers:
get them seperated and get them to the vet and get them fixed immediately. they can not i say can not have a littler it will be unhealthy and have deformities. not to get onto your case of anything but you knew they are brother and sister and knew the female would go into heat it was your responsibilty to had them fixed already. you were just irresponsible and asking for trouble. now all you can do is wait and take care of the concequences. shame shame
call the vet. it looks like youre going to have to get ready for puppies.
Wow inertresting! I think you should let them be..They'll be happy I guess. I never thought this could happen! Wait are you sure they're from the same mother?
Have them neutered as soon as possible, especially the female.
Depending on their age and if your female was in heat then you may have pups on the way. You can get your females sprayed right away to stop the pregnancy and then you will not have to worry about any further pups.
There is not much you can do except seperate hope mabye the mating didn't take and reduce the litter size in the event that they have only mated once... you never know if they mated before un observed so you more than likely have a litter on the way. I am not going to rant on how irresponsable this was but I am going to mention it.
Why aren't at least one of them fixed? You can't have a male and female together and expect them not to mate. That is just asking for trouble.
well i know its kinda weird but they can have puppies together so they will be soon.
u should separate
them until the female is threw being in heat or u should buy another male put them two together and separate the brother if the female gets pregnant she has a chance of getting hurt because the babies would be incest which could cause problems with the mother when giving birth or after giving birth this was not ur fault cause the females eventually come in heat but if u decide to just separate the male u should keep him as far as possible from the female because he can chew through doors its happened to me they Will do anything trust me or you could get one of them fixed
Get em a doggy abortion .
dont worry its completly natural they arent like humans so if they have sex there pups wont have problems
nothing in there dog way they don't care if there brother or sister
the vet can give your female dog an injection that will stop the pregnancy and i suggest that you have at least the male castrated and then you will stop the problem in the future but it would be best to have both dogs neutered and that way you will sort out both your problems but remember in breeding happens all the time this is how breeders keep the lines pure and that is why most breeds have so many genetic faults, its a shame that most people just keep harping on about the so called designer dog at least they are not in bred for obtaining a dog that can win best of breed most hybrid dog owners have their dogs for pets and not just to win a competition
Why do you have siblings living together while they're still intact AND with the female on heat? Go and SPAY the girl and NEUTER the boy TOMORROW and stop being so irresponsible.
At the very least, have the female neutered as soon as possible. If she is pregnant, it will abort the puppies but they would, most likely, have been unhealthy anyway.
Get at least the female fixed immediately. If you are squeamish about abortion, ask the vet to not tell you if she was pregnant.

Inbreeding can bring out genetic problems and is discouraged.
I would start thinking of dog names.

I have two puppies that were dumped in my neighborhood a week ago. They are black and look like labs.?

They look to be 6 to 7 weeks old by size and teeth development. I wormed them with the liquid worm and gave heart worm medication one week after worming. They both have a little brown in the paw area and behind area. They both are female and walk with back legs sort of boxy. After I get them shots and and checked by the vet I will try to adopt them out. Does anyone have any thoughts on what you think they may be mixed with. I have a four year old lab and a 12 week old lab they spend time with and it works real well. I just don't want to have a pair of dogs taht may be agressive with they get older.
Answers:
the only way the dogs will become aggresive is if you teach them to be aggressive. just show them a lot of love and they should be fine.
Actuallly you need to be a good pack leader and show them who makes the rules. If you do this, even if you have the most aggressive breed, they will follow your orders.

Havent you ever seen The Dog Whisperer? Its great!
They wouldn't be purebred Labrador Retriever's if they have brown coloring on their paws. They may be mixed with a Rottweiler or Chow Chow (stiff legs) but that's just a guess. They could be crossed with anything - it's too hard to tell without a picture or two. If you've got a few pictures of them on your computer, upload them on http://www.photobucket.com and post the HTTP link.

Those two puppies will only become aggressive if someone teaches them to be aggressive. If you leave them outside and abuse them - they'll become aggressive. If you let them inside, love them and exercise them - they will be great family pets.

I have two poms, one digs bad in the back yard what can I do to stop it or slow it down?

my pom thats digging just had puppies but this isnt the first time she has had puppies, but it is the first time she has dug in the back yard
Answers:
Its very possible that she could be digging because its getting warmer outside and shes trying to dig a hole to cool off. Or she just simply has a bunch of excess energy. Which is what Im thinking. Although you might have a huge yard for her to run around in, dogs will never burn all the energy they have by themselves. They'll run around some, but not enough. Get her out for a fast paced walk. Be sure that she is trotting seens that that is a dogs normal pace. If shes not trotting than shes burning no energy. Play fetch and other games to wear her out. Kong toys stuffed with kibble and peanut butter, And Nylabones. Good luck.
well most dogs dig because they need more exercise. maybe walk her a little more or play with her a little more get those juices pumping that is my advice
This may sound a little mean, but it works and is less stressful to the dog than YOU, it's owner, yelling and punishing it. Dogs tend to dig up a hole after you just filled it in! They like digging in the same spots (mine anyways!). After you fill the hole, sprinkle cyanne pepper all over it, then put a light layer of dirt over it. When it starts to re-dig the hole, he/she gets a big jolt! If you do a couple different spots, and it happens 2 or 3 times, they tend not to continue the behaviour. My dog was 4 and she learned, fast. And the burning in her nose and mouth etc. only lasted longer enough for her to know it hurts.
you can put chicken wire down on the grass, it keeps your doggy from digging, and lets the grass grow.

or you can also put Cayenne pepper down (the smell irritates the dogs nose)
I hope this was helpful! =)
Try filling in the holes with small rocks, then put chicken wire over the area, and replace the dirt and or grass, good luck!
When you clean up after the dog you can try putting their own feces in the holes and fill them in. This sometimes works and sometimes just makes thm dig somewhere else. I do not recommend the wire in the grass. If they do decide to dig there they can get a leg/paw caught in it and be injured. I agree the dogmight need more exercise. Digging is a natural thing for dogs and actually good exercise and good for them. You can also make a designated area for her to dig by placing landscape timbers in a square and start a hole for her. Dogs can learn to dog in designated areas.
You should see the caves my Danes have made in their yards. I gave up and besides... the dirt is gone anyway. LOL Never enough dirt to refill the hole! Good Luck!

I have two min pin's and although they are smart they do evil tricky things does anyone else have this problem

Yes, my aussie also continues to show me new ways to open a "locked" trashcan...I enjoy intelligent dogs, though...and exercise definately helps...VIGOROUS exercise...running around and playing.

I have two dogs, one dog will not allow the other to eat what do i do?

Answers:
Feed the dog and block the aggressive one from trying to get to the dog that is eating. Eventually the aggressor will tire and will retreat. You have to be the dominate one. Continue this practice til it becomes a learned behavior. If you have the patience, assertiveness, and CALMNESS (you must stay calm) this shouldn't take but 1 or 2 feedings to get through. Try it and let us know how it goes. DO NOT HIT YOUR DOG or even pet your dog at this time. DO NOT feed your dogs seperately, after you get through this training all of you will be able to enjoy eating together. People keep telling you to feed the dogs seperately and that would be a very BIG mistake! Please do not try this, what you will do if you feed them seperately is create a division, and all the training you have done w/ the dogs will go out the window. Feeding seperately will create a multitude of "packs" in a "pack" you would never see a Mother feeding one pup at a time they all eat together. Feeding is a ritual the pups learn from this and work as a team as they mature. Please for goodness sake DO NOT FEED SEPERATELY!
Feed them in separate rooms.
call that ceasar guy, the dog whisperer. he can solve this aggresive behavior.
You can feed them in separate rooms or just spit up the bowls and stand beside them and enforce your rule on eating. Make sure that the dog who is not allowing the other to eat knows better. Hold him back if he tries to go to the other bowl. My dog use to do that and finally he learned that I was not going to allow that. So now he waits for my other dog to get done eating and then finishes her bowl.
First answerer took my answer. Feed them in seprate rooms, or at seperate times. Maybe feed one while you take the other out to play awhile.
Feed them separately..
I would make sure that YOU "eat" first.. Then you decide which one deserves to eat after you. And then you supervise your last to make sure that he gets enough of what's left...
Separate the dogs, put them on opposite sides of the room or in two different rooms when it's time to eat.
Alot of dogs are teritorial and will not let anybody or anything near them when they eat. The best thing that you can do is feed them seperatly or smack him on the nose with a newspaper and tell him "You need to learn to share, It dosn't only belong to you," when he does it again.
You have two dogs that need rehabilitation, and you, hon, need training. and I could write the book or four pages here,,,,,,,but the easiest thing is for you to begin watching The Dog Whisperer on the National Geograph. Chann. And get the DVD by Caesar Millan from the NG. Channel. You need to learn how to become the alpha. right now, that dominant dog is running your house and you are just one of the other dogs in it. The DVD is about $24. It doesn't teach you to teach your dog how to sit, or stay or tricks. It teaches you how to be the undisputed pack leader: Watch the show. If you don't get cable , find someone who does, and go watch. amazing stuff, and it all works,

And OMG do not hit your dog with newspapers, as the idiot above is telling you. Territoralism is not allowed, and again, you own the territory.. do not strike them with your hands, do not in any way scream, yell or physically abuse them.. NEVER NEVER NEVER. If you need to write me, do so, but never strike your dog.
Feed both dogs in their respective crates and pick up the bowls after 15 minutes. Do not free feed your dogs. It can lead to resource guarding and obesity.
Certain breeds have a strong food agression problem and should always be allowed to have their food in their own area. It comes with the breed and if purchased from a breeder you should have educated about it.

Abused dogs and dogs from shelters and rescues unfortunattly will display the same aggresion. When a dog knows hunger, he will not want to share and it is really hard to break. You might have the sweetest dogs but rather than causing a fight feed them seperatly, let it be their time to enjoy their food. Nothing wrong with that.
Feed them in separate rooms and at separate times.

I have two dogs and when i leave to go somewhere i put our dogs in the kennel.?

when they poop they run through it so by the time i get home to clean it, it is smeared in the ground (these are outside dogs). I shovel it but it still smells. How can I make it not smell so bad?
Answers:
Not sure what the surface is...I agree a washable surface will help a lot. That said, I don't have one, so below is what i do. Mind you I have one dog, two at times (I foster), and a couple of cats (who go at home) in a fairly good-sized run.

1) There are products to help with getting your dogs to go in one area, so that they are less apt to run through it or have it all over the place. I've seen pheromone releasing posts, for example. Not sure how they work, but worth a try if it will help. I was lucky, mine trained herself to go in one region, and, so far, has trained the other dogs that come over, too. I just need to keep it clean!

2) I occasionally spray down with a yard spray (Yard Odor Killer brandname) I get at the pet store. It works for concrete and is safe for plants and pets.

3) For the indoor area, (it is part of the garage), I will mop with one of the enzymatic cleaners from time to time for general doggie smells. (I use Nature's Miracle laundry detergent or cleaner)

4) For the dirt areas, I put down bark. I get that at places like Home Depot. It keeps things from getting muddy, and I don't have to deal with grass. Occasionally (1/ year) I will add another bag if it seems to be getting thin. Seems to also help with the smell.

All pet products I metnion are available online or at most pet stores. I just looked at petsmart, they have the two brands I mention online.
Try washing the kennel area with bleach %26 water (rinse real good). It'll kill germs and help the smell.
Good luck.
how can you make poop not smell so bad?? if you find out let me know,,, also, why aren't your dogs trained to live in the house with the rest of the family?? why have them?

"why aren't your dogs trained to live in the house with the rest of the family?? why have them? "

There are a gazillion reasons why some dogs should be housed outside.
Would you like to have this crew in a house with you??
http://www.hunt101.com/img/449178.jpg...
They come in when it is THEIR TURN.
If you expect a dog to work in freezing temperatures absolutely the cruelest thing you can do is make them live in the house where it is warm.

You really should put your kennels an a washable surface so that you can keep it clean.
spray a special chemical to make the smell go away.
ask a local and close vet with a lot of experience to help you

I have two dogs a border collie (female) and a mix adopted rescue male looks like great Dane and lab.?

They play ruff, she has a slight limp, can i give her Ibuprofen ?? or what to ease the inflammation and how much
Answers:
Dear god no! the only human medication you could give your dog is aspirin and only in small doses for temporary inflamation relief.
You haven't said how old she is or on which leg she's limping. If its a joint problem you could try her on something called "Sasha's blend" it's basically glucosamine which is a human medication derived from shark cartilidge for the treatment of arthritis. You should also consider taking her to your vet to have the problem correctly diagnosed.
NO NO Ibuprofin at all. It will make your dog very, very sick. NO Advil or any other type of human pain releiver. Call your vet and have them suggest something to you. They may want to see her to make sure she didn't pull a muscle or worse.
I used to give my dog bute, its like ibuprofen for horses. but dont feed too much, 20lb dog 1000lb horse. you get the point.
My vet said that coated Bufferin is ok to give dogs. When my GSD was stung by a bee on the nose, after treating her, this is what they said we could give her.
You can give coated baby aspirin but I'd suggest a trip to the vet to get proper medication that will not harm the pup!

I have two Boston Terriers who are very picky. I have tried many kinds of dog food?

yet they refuse to eat any of them, wanting only table food. Will they eventually eat the dog food if it is all they are offered, or will they let themselves starve?
Answers:
By switching food, and when you "cave" and give them table food, you're teaching them that all they have to do is wait, and they will get what they want.

Here's what you do.
Pick one brand of kibble. Make sure it's high quality and doesn't contain corn or wheat.
Pick 2 meal times (morning and night) and set a strict schedule. Put the food out for 15 minutes, then pick it up. They get NOTHING until the next meal. Don't "cave". They will learn really quickly to eat the food that's out during meal time.

They won't starve themselves.
Promise.
My friend raises bostons %26 she's very strict about their diets. In the morning she gives them raw carrots mixed with fish %26 potato kibble. In the evening, it's just the kibble with a little water in it to moisten it. She said the fish %26 potato is good for their skin %26 digestion. She does not offer them anything during the day except for 1 dog biscuit when they go into their kennels. That's it. She said they learn to eat or they go hungry until the next meal %26 very few have ever skipped more than 1 meal. You just gotta be firm %26 it'll work.
I have a bosten terrier to who is very picky, try giving them peddigree dog food, and every time they eat give them a treat. i know it sounds weird but it worked for my dog. hope this helps.
try nutro max it is all natural and is very good for them. that is what my dog is on and he loves it. we like the lamb and rice. but there is alot a different kinds

ALL *YOUR* FAULT!!!
You MADE em that way!!
STOP IT!!!

They will ****NOT*****"starve"!
They're TOO FING FAT NOW!
Grow some GUTS %26 ONLY give em DOG FOOD!

ONCE daily -put feed down, give em 15 MINUTES to eat %26 then PICK IT UP!

*********NOTHING********** else offered but water for ********24 HOURS*****
REPEAT for as long as it takes...a week? FINE! TWO weeks?? FINE!!!

I have two 11month old brindled strip female american terriers"pit bulls", They are living with 1cat&3children

they take baths and would hop in with u if u dont close the door ,they love water and playing fetch, they love to crawl in the bed or couch with my 5 yr old shes their best friend and if she catches them with her dolls she runs right up to them the dogs roll over showing bellly and she removes the toy No problem there. Now the cat we had 1st everything is ok as long as she walks pass their food. they just stare at her an she leaves the food alone (the dogs share their food with each other)- they are under my watch because of the sterotype title"pitbull" i see no difference in them as to the other dogs i have had . The only thing is obedience school its 600.for 2 .Iam trying to stop them from becoming excited when they see other dogs iam not sure it they want to play or fight. I found out later that they came from fighter parents. They were also treated for dermadectic mange. But i want dog friendly dogs and also i want them to learn the sit and stay comand were as i only can undo.!
Answers:
It is all in how they are raised. The only problem is that if the child does something to make them think she is being aggressive toward them (bless their little hearts, children don't mean too) then the dogs may bite her. They have jaws that unhinge and that is what promotes the danger there. They may not let go easily. I think you may be asking how to train them. The American Kennel Club associates in my area often offer free obedience lessons. You have to go with your dog and they train you in how to train your dog. It is a very good class that lasts about 12 weeks. Please watch your child. She won't mean any harm, but children sometimes are a little rough. The dogs may hurt her for hurting them even it was an accident.
I'm not sure what your question is Debbi, but I would rehome them if I was you. In UK a 3 year-old little girl was mauled to death by 1 dog on New Years Eve. Is it worth the risk?
your crazy for allowing your child to play around a pit bull, i lost my niece two years ago becuase my sister thought her pit bull was so cute and a wonderful pet, that was until the babysitter went outside to check the maila nd returned to find the dog literally chewing my nieces face off, and then went for her (my nieces) throat, thus unforuantely killing her, even if she had lived she would have been disfigured horribly from scars the 'cute and adorable' pit bull inflicted on her.
Anyone that owns a pit bull should be forced to turn their dogs into the local pound and then the dogs should be put down. Pit bulls are nothing but war/big game hunting dogs bred to kill and not meant to be a childs pet!
I hope my sisters tragedy spares you, but id advise getting rid of the pit bull and getting a small dog like a schanuser(sp or a chiwawa(sp again) or even a hamster or gerbil or gold fish, anything but a dog thats natural instinct is to maim.
i have had two pit bulls over 10 years and probally the best dogs i've ever owned. they are what you make of them just like any other dog. its how you raise them
I'm not great at training dogs, best we got ours to do was pee out side but he was only a small mutt so it worked out okay.
You can't always judge a Dog by the breed. My Uncle has an enormous Rotweiler who's head is twice as big as mine, but he grew up around kids and is the bigges sook I've ever seen in a dog. I spent a week at my uncle's house and the dog spent most of the time with his head in my lap trying to get some attention.
From everything I've seen and read, consistancy is the only way to teach a dog anything. Be firm and punish the dog every time he does something wrong.
If the dog isn't supposed to get up on a couch you have to take him off every time he does and tell him no. If he's allowed to be on it ever he'll get confused.
Maybe taking them to a park where there are other dogs will get them used to being around others. If you have friends with dogs maybe they can bring theirs too so you can have them play together.
The two posts I just read about pit bulls not being good pets and being put down are so ignorant. Just like klu klux klan ignorance. It's how you raise your dogs. Any dog can do a child harm. If you want your dogs to be social you have to socialize your dogs under careful supervision. 11 months is kind of old now but you still need to socialize them with other dogs. I had a pit and two ferrets that all have free roam of the house. I socialized my dog when she was young and she got along with all pets, cats, whatever. The only thing she ever use to chase were squirrels...
okay, the other two, are obviously not really into dogs.
i had a pit bull, and he was a rescue dog, that had been breed for fighting. he was rescued by the aspca, from a dog fighting home, in DC.
some pit bulls are horribly agressive, but he was the best dog we have ever owned. i think the fact that they are submissive to your 5 year old, shows that they are not mean, or aggressive.
do you have a friend that owns a full grown dog? if so, then set them up on play date, where you two have them on leashes, and let them get to know eachother. if they act agressive towards the other dog, then i would say that you need to find the $600, and get them into the classes. or even just $300, and do one at a time, or enroll one, and then use what you learn at the classes, to teach the other dog at home.
if they just play, then i would say you are in the clear, and not to worry!
dont take sh*t from anyone, if you love your dog, and they dont have a problem in your home, then dont let the breed affect you.
now, i have a 150lb rotti, and he is the biggest love in the world. but everone is constantly like, "oh, i cant believe you just let him play with you, and run around your house!" or the fact that we have him at all, makes some people un-easy.
Have they ever met another dog since you have had them? I have a 1 year old pit bull that I rescued from an animal shelter a few months ago. She has been absolutely perfect for us. But when we first brought her home we were cautious, because we didn't know ANYTHING about her history. But we also wanted a dog friendly dog, and an obedient dog. So we had to test her personality. We have a friend who also has an adult pit bull. His dog is known to be very friendly with ALL dogs. So we brought our dog over. We put them both on a leash, and the men held them, so they could control the situation if anything happened. First we just stood near each other, making them Both sit, to see their reactions. They were both fine, interested, but not at all showing aggression. So we let them sniff each other. Again, they were fine, no problems. After that they started wanting to play. So we let them play. We found out that we were lucky to get a dog friendly pit bull. She loves ALL dogs! But even though our pit bull is dog friendly, we are aware that not ALL dogs are dog friendly, so we still keep her leashed until we are sure the two dogs will get along, because if the other dog tried to bite my pit bull, my pit bull would dominate in a fight, and I do NOT want that. So, you need to see where your dogs stand in dog aggression. If they are not dog aggressive, then GREAT! But, if they are, then you need to seek professional help. Pit Bulls CAN be dangerous dogs, only because of their strength. And if they start barking aggressively or growling when they see another dog, STOP, don't go any further, find a professional.

For obedience, I'm not an obedience trainer, but I trained my dog to sit and stay with no problem. She is very smart, as most pit bulls are, and she caught on quick. She will stay for 1/2 hour if I asked her too. If you can't afford the obedience classes, try just asking your veterinarian for some training tips. They usually have dogs, and have worked with many dogs, and can give you some help. Good Luck with your pit bulls!
First off, shop around for trainers. My wife and I looked around and found one near where we live in a doggie day-care store that was relatively inexpensive. Dog day-care's cash cow is the day care, so if they offer training, it may be more affordable.

Remember training of dogs is really training of their owners, too. If you want the dog to learn sit, you need to be patient and persistent. Start by standing in front of the dog. Hold a tret in front of its nose, and slowly move the treat up and back over their head. The dog will have to sit in order to watch the treat, so as soon as you start moving the treat, command them clearly: "SIT." As soon as their rear touches the ground, give the treat, say "GOOD Dog!" in a cheerful voice, and pat them and praise them. Work with them over and over. After a few days if they're smart dogs, you will be able to stop moving the treat over their head, and will be able to just say, "SIT." Try it. Do not issue commands twice, let them think about it. Say, "SIT" without moving the treat, without hand signals, or anything. As soon as they sit, treat and praise. It sounds easy... it's not difficult, and depends on how fast the dog catches on.
DOWN is similar. Once the dog gets sit OK, you will move the treat towards the floor. They will probably try to follow the treat, as they lower themselves, move the treat away fromt hem along the floor so they lie down, then move the treat slightly to one side, to make the dog rotate their head and shift their weight so they're completely lying down. Issue commend DOWN just as they begin to move down, and when they get to final position, "GOOD Dog!" treat and praise.

Over and over.

A trainer can work on more advanced training like stay, down-stay, and more that will come in useful.

Training dogs to stay calm when they see other dogs is hard. One way to start this is to bribe them into behaving on the leash. Keep treats with you when you walk. When you see other dogs coming, distract your dog with the treat, and then let them have it when the other dog has passed by as long as your dog is behaving well. Eventually they should learn: when I see another dog, I will pay attnetion to my owner and behave. It's a more advanced skill to learn though, and you should have them well-taught on sit, down and stay first to make it easier. This way you can tell them to sit and stay when a strange dog goes by, and your dog knows if they behave, they get a treat and attention.

Good luck
OK people are sooo stereotypical. I have pit bulls and they are the most loving dog I have ever owned. At 53 pounds each they both still think they are lap dogs! (One isn't even full grown yet) Heres the deal. ANY dog no matter what breed it is has the potential to be mean. BUT I think it has a lot to do with the way the dog is raised and treated by the family who owns it. Mine love to play with little kids. My nieces come over and the dogs get all excited grabbing toys cause they think of it as party time the kids are here!!! Though I have noticed mine are fine with other dogs if we aren't at home but my adult female is territorial of our yard if a stray comes over un invited. SOo decide for your self. I trained them myself and have learned that they will do anything asked of them if you give them a treat. She sits when I say and will stay till I dismiss her so try training them yourself if ya want and if that doesn't work send them to a trainer it is worth it.
Iam a owner of 2 pits my self i also have a 4 year old son that thoes dogs love one of my pits is a reformed fighter but that has nothing to do with it my dogs have never bit a person my reformed fighter lays on the floor wile i watch t.v and my 4 year old jumps up and down on his back he will never move my other pit lays in bed with him wile he sleeps the pit takes his chin and lays it on my son throught u can't listen too everything you hear here a wile back i was watching anmial plant and the guys were going to pick up this ladys cats and one of them come outa the house holding his calf on because a ankle biter had took a chunk outta it now if that was a pit they would have put it down right there but it wasn't so they didn't they told her to bring the dogs to court with her .....so please don't think of pits as bad dogs it like every other dog its in how u raise them
Please, get a book on training. There are many good ones out there. Also if you read up on dog breeding you might alter your opinion and respect of different dog "breeds". Pitt bulls did not get there reputation by being the best "family pet". Life definitely would be easier for you , your kids and the pups if you choose to put them in a more appropriate home. I am sure there are great stories of pit bulls making great family pets; there are also stories of people winning lotteries. Do you want to play against the odds with your family's safety ??
Just keep up with the training. They'll start calming down at around a year and a half.

I have two yorkshire terriers , trouble to breed?

i have 2 yorkies. male very small and female larger and more dominating...the problem is how do i get them to have puppies as he is very small and she seems very uninterested,, she is on heat now and he does everything but the coorect place..

There are several different cycles a female dog must go through during her season:

Proestrus 鈥?The female attracts males. Proestrus lasts approximately nine days; the female, however, will not allow coitus at this time.
Estrus 鈥?During this period, which also lasts approximately nine days, the female will accept the male and is fertile. Ovulation usually occurs in the first forty-eight hours; however, this can vary greatly.
Diestrus 鈥?Lasting sixty to ninety days, diestrus is the period when the reproductive tract is under the control of the hormone progesterone. This occurs whether or not the becomes pregnant. False pregnancy (pseudocyesis), a condition in which the shows symptoms of being pregnant although she has not conceived, is occasionally seen during diestrus.
Inserts 鈥?No sexual activity takes place.

You must consiter these for the female and the male may not want anything to do with her because she IS bigger and dominating. But, good luck!
Hon, don't breed your dogs, don't be another byb. (back yard breeder). There are 5 million dogs euthanized in this country for lack of homes... You'll just add to it. And unless you have just top quality healthy dogs, you'll just have another set of nuttin' dogs. Half of all dogs never have a forever home. If you want some more dogs, go adopt one. And if you don't believe my statistics and how horrid it is, go yourself to your county shelter, and watch as the give the needle to puppy after puppy after puppy. Even if you find homes your yours, down the road, those later ones will not. Please, hon, get your dog spayed, and your male neutered. Neither of them is good enough to be a show dog.

How old are they? They need to be a minimum of 2 years old.
Why would you want to breed them however? If you breed correctly, there is no money to be made. 40% of dogs euthanized in shelters are purebred dogs, including Yorkies.

Unless you are truly involved with people who fancy Yorkies, know the bloodlines, know the health and temperaments of the dogs, have done the tests, and studied with a vet or been mentored, you have no business breeding.

This would make you just another backyard breeder.
Backyard breeders are considered a pox on the dogworld by people who truly love dogs.
Take a walk through a shelter or 2 and find out just how many dogs, purebreds includes, that come from back yard breeders without a clue as to what they're doing, are waiting to be killed every day. Then do the responsible thing and put your dogs, who are not breeding quality, or you'd already have the information you need from their breeder, in the vet's office to be spayed and neutered. Much healthier for them as well.

I have tried everything... How can i get flies off my dogs ears???

I have cleaned their living area every day, i bought fly traps, and put neosporin on his ears every day, and the flies keep landing on his ears and eating him alive. Anybody know any goooood remedies that keep the flies away or kills them?
Answers:
I have the answer!

For years I tried EVERY remedy and product on the market. I live on a horse ranch and the flies were constantly eating my dogs ears.

I tried everything and this is what worked
PET-GUARD INSECTICDE GEL by
Virbac

What is fabulous about this product besides that it works is that it is clear, non gooey and after you put it on them for a few days it has some residual effects so that if you miss a day it is still working.
Buy some Perethrin at a local do it yourself pest control place. It comes n a spray bottle and pray it on your dog and trust me everything will check out inclduing the flys.
If it doesn't bug your dog's nose too much (some dogs are bugged more by this than others), put a tiny bit of vinegar on or around his ears. Do not put it IN his ears, of course. Flies can't stand vinegar.

If the vinegar does bug your dog, then take him to the vet and see what he says.
Go to a horse supply store and get a product named "Shield". You spray it right on the animal.
Take them to a vet and for about 20 dollars depending on how much the weigh, they will give you some medicine drops and it REALLY works.
Bag balm works real well also. The flies are usually around the ears and eyes for the moisture. You can coat the ears and under the eyes w/the bag balm. They use it on cows. Once the ears have healed from the fly bites you should be able to discontinue for a bit.
WHY do you keep your dog outside?

Does he live outside?

Why don't you spend some time wherever you keep him?

Live with him and you will see why flies are eating the poor dog up.

Maybe if you experience how the dog has to live, you won't make him live in such a bad environment.

Please find someone to give the dog to that will not make the guy live outside. What kind of life are you giving that dog?

HORSES live outside, not dogs.
Purchase Flys-Off from your pet store. It is our number one seller in the summer time. It comes in a spray for their body (like bug spray for pets) and a cream for sores like you are describing. It will help heal the sores and keep the flys off their ears. If I remember correctly it runs about $10-$12. Good luck!
AsK A VET
There are 2 products I use one Tom I already suggested also there is a product call Fly Off also found where they sell horse and farm supplies.
Both work wonderfully!

I have tried all online pet services, where can I find a healthy puppy?

Please help. I have contacted all local animal shelters, online animal shelters, etc. All I want is a female, small ,8 to 10 week old puppy that is not a nervous, barking maniac..any ideas?
Answers:
I'm very happy that this question has been brought up...

First and foremost the only way you could find a healthy puppy is by doing your research, by this I mean;

*Research and figure out the right breed for you - what kind of puppy do you want? - laid-back?, doesn't shed much?, active?, big, small? also consider the health issues of the breed you want, always take into consideration that your puppy will be a lifelong companion so you should and always consider the health issues that they may have. These are some of the things you have to consider when you look for that perfect little companion.

* Second - NEVER EVER BUY a puppy from Pet Stores - by doing so you are supporting the Horrible conditions of Puppy Mill dogs, DO a google search on puppy mills and you'll see what I mean.

Remember AN UNHEALTHY PUPPY IS ALSO AS CUTE AS A PROPERLY BRED PUPPY... You might be able to get your money back from pet stores but will you be willing to return something that has captured your heart?

Also, remember that when you return a puppy from a pet store, they are either unmercifully put to sleep because of the condition that they have or sent to the Shelter where their life will hang in the balance - Shelter dogs usually have a time frame, most of them end up being put to rest because nobody wants to adopt them.

* Third - Look for REPUTABLE breeders, by this I mean the breeders who test the pup's Mom %26 Dad - The Major test before breeding consist of OFA - which is a hip dysplasia test - to determine if the dog is a suitable breeding stock. CERF or ACVO - both of this test determines the current condition of the breeding stocks eyes - Eye problems are serious, some dogs tend to go blind as early as 4 years old because an inheritable genetic problem wasn't put into consideration before breeding.

REPUTABLE BREEDERS will do this test to their dogs, although there is no 100% guarantee that any pups will be 100% free of any inheritable genetic problem, doing this test minimizes the chances of having these problems.

The AKC is a good way to find the local Breed Clubs in your area. www.akc.org

* Never be afraid to ask questions to the breeder, such as Testings done to the dogs, Sellers Guarantee - A reputable breeder who is a member of a National Breed Club will most of the time guarantee your puppy for any inheritable genetic problem - for a lifetime or minimum of 5 years.

Hope this helps and Goodluck on your hunt for that perfect lifelong companion.
Have you tried save a pet. They are great non kill org. I got a dog from them 4 yrs ago. He is the greatest thing.
Ive had a lot of luck with driving around my town. Looking for signs of puppies for sale, or getting the word out to friends and friends of friends and people I work with that Im looking to buy a puppy. There's always the newspaper you can put an ad out that you are looking for a puppy, and if someone has a litter they will call you...Or set up an online ad for your area! Good luck!
Please, please, ohhhhh PLEASE hang on until your shelter gets unwanted puppies in - ask them to let you know as soon as they do. It must happen quite frequently - it does in most places.

Please don't ever buy from a pet store because they buy from puppy farms, and definitely don't buy a puppy online - apart from the cruel methods used to produce them, a lot of online ads are scams and you will lose your money and never see a pet.

Sorry to repeat myself but please do be patient - the right puppy will come along and not only will you have saved her life, you will be keeping money out of the puppy farmers' pockets.
keep trying the shelters...
remember that smaller dogs, like chihuahuas tend to be nervous and barking. small dogs bark a lot.

If you know what breed you most likely want, you could join a breed group at yahoo and ask if anyone has dogs for sale.

or check dogster
Research the type of breed you want and then see if they have any rescue organisations involved with that breed. Contact them in regards to your search for a puppy. The dogs that rescue organisations usually have have been in foster care so the carer will be able to tell you the temperament of the dog.
If you don't want to rescue a dog, then do a search for a reputable breeder.
Have you tried petfinder.com? They have puppies from all over the US. Just put in your search criteria the size you want and puppy and you will get a huge list. A number have foster homes and thus you will know their temperament as well.

Good luck!
I would look in the news paper and at the shelter if you aren't looking for a certain breed. Otherwise if you are looking to pay for a pure breed I would look on the American Kennel Club (AKC) for a list of legitimate breeders. Also you can look on the rescue sight for that breed (for ex boxer rescue, lab rescue etc.) Have you ever had a puppy, it's a lot like having a baby, also puppies tend to be very energetic until they are a few years old. As for healthy, check to make sure the nose is moist, that is a good sign if it is. If it seems lacking in energy that may not be good either. Ask if it has been dewormed, all dogs ne to be dewormed esspecially puppies. If you are looking for a certain breed, you may also want to research the breeds personality. Good luck
keep trying your local sheltersm patience will pay off. Please save a life and don't support adding to the death of thousands of unwanted pets.
i found ours through adds in my local papers he's a beagle good in the house and outside only barks alot when somebody is around the house very loveable and protective over my girls just take your time and don't rush in to it good luck

I have to get rid of my dog of 15 years and wondered if i should adopt or put her down?

i asked this question before but i want to tell you the whole story, when we had this dog my brother picked her out and we had good times with this dog but 4 or 5 years ago my brother died, we had to sell our house and move to a condo, now we are getting complaints becuz we dont have a hard and the dog does her buisness on the deck, we cant buy a new house cuz they are just too expensive, her health is ok , but i just dont know what to do ,i love her so much but just in a bad situation right now

pets are like children. If the complex didnt want kids, you find one that does, period. You dont take on a critter for just a few years, its for their lifetime. How fair is it for the dog? Kill him because your tired of your responsibility? and thinking of getting another one? come on. what kind of cad does that? That poor ignorant dog thinks your its family. Wonder if your mother felt about you that way? You say you love her so much? LOL. Either go find a place that you can live suitable for the both of you or go have yourself put to sleep. Thank god your not my master. Put yourself in that poor dogs place. What would she want done? Believe me, we all pay for our decisions in life. Monetary things mean nothing. Morals mean everything. Karma will find you.
Put her down. No offence but she is going to die soon anyway and I would'nt trust just anyone to take care of a 15 year old dog they don't even know. :-(
Well take her for a walk throughout the day! Clean up the deck and why should they be concerned if its your deck anyway? After 15 years this baby has been yours so why would you allow some A hole neighbor run her off from you!
if you are for real
i feel so bad for you and the dog
dont put her down
you say you have lived in your current situation for a few years
try your best to do what you did in the past
why all of a sudden are you getting complaints
something has changed
what is it
try to fugure it out and youll be able to keep the dog
You should never put down your dog. NEVER.
It breaks the trust and the bond..
And it will even make you feel worse after you've done that.

So worse comes to worst, just get someone to adopt her, rather than taking her down.

You wouldn't want to be bugged by your conscience at night just because you had your beloved dog put down right?
shame on you!!! i can't believe someone could even have this thought in their head after owning a dog for 15 f'n years. you ought to do everything in your power to stay with your ''family member''
Cantankerous old lady has said it best. Bravo Cantankerous for saying what needed to be said. I wish more people would have the courage to speak up for those who can't speak for themselves. Tony R, please do the right thing and just train your dog to do his thing in the right place. Prepare a potty for him and clean it regularly. Take the dog out for walks.
Remember the law of karma. If you don't take the trouble to look after your aging dog, no one may take the trouble to look after you when you are aged.
At 15 years old... you need to keep your dog. For one I wouldn't have move into a place that I couldn't keep my dog. That was mistake number one. I am just trying to figure out how anyone can give up a dog after having him for 15 years I just don't know how you can do that.

You need to think about this dog. You are the only family he has always known and you want to rip his life apart by putting him with strangers. He doesn't have many more years to live make him happy as he did you for so many years. Think back on the fun you had with him.. How many times he stay with your and your brother over hard times. Think how he misses your brother as you do ..Trust me... your dog lost something too. Like I said your dog doesn't have much time left.not at 15...Make his last days worth living .. don't let him leave this world with sadness. Let him die with family.
Move. Sure, it's not always that simple, but putting an animal down is a horrible decision to have to make, and should only be done as a last resort. Unfortunately, even if you do find an adoption agency that will take your dog, at that age it would probably end up unadopted %26 either living more or less in a cage or put down. If your dog is not sevrely ill and/or in pain, sounds like she's been a better friend than to deserve that.
I would rather live in a cardboard box than kill or get rid of my two dogs. Why can't you walk them so they can get exercise and do their business outside? I lived in an apartment for 2 years with my dogs, and I took them to a park to run around and go to the washroom. They never once had an accident inside.
Since you don't have a back yard I suggest you get the dog on a regiment of taking her on walks. It only takes a few minutes of your time a couple times a day. I would never put a dog down just for convenience sake. I know yu love the dog and this can be easily worked out.
If I was you I would adopt her to someone who has a yard to still live her life out she deserves a chance to live just like you and me or put a add in the free column for her. You can even take a picture of her and take it to the humane society letting them now your looking for good home for the dog
I never condone giving up a dog but I know sometimes there are circumstances that make it so. I would say try to find someone you know or pick out as a new owner. Sometimes there is family or family friends that can take them in. But I would say never ever take the dog at that age to a shelter and it is not far to end a healthy dogs life over problems it did not cause.

Why would you put a healthy dog down??? that's crazy!! I understand that you are in a hard situation but putting her down is nutts. Try to find a good home for her. Put flyers up around your neighborhood for a free dog. You should get some responses right away. Never put down a healthy dog that could make a good pet!!!
DONT PUT HER DOWN! ifd you love her, invesdt some time and find her a good home. you can give her to a humane shelter, or send her to a foster home where she can relax until she finds a happy, safe home. there is no reason to murder a perfectly healthy dog.
Adopt her out, give her a chance!
Don't kill her just because you can't keep her..
heck, even taking her for a ride out in the country and letting her go loose would be better than killing her!
Find him/her a good home.
It would be cruel for you to put this dog down if there are no health issues and it's a matter of your lifestyle change.

Look online for local "no kill" shelters or "dog rescues".

Call them..they will be willing to take the dog and try to find a home for it.

Why can't you leash the dog and take it for a walk to do it's business elsewhere? Bring plastic bags and pick up the dogs poop.

Sorry, but if you love her as much as you claim you do..then take the time to walk her and pick up after her.
This is so sad. I'm so sorry for you but sometimes things happen and we are forced to do things we really don't want to do. If your dog is not sick then why don't you try to find someone to take her. Someone you know and that knows the dog would be perfect, but don't end her life just because you don't have a yard. Try to find someone, maybe put an add in the paper or something. Good luck
adopt atleast try to
Adopt out. Someone, somewhere, will gladly take her off your hands and give her the yard she needs.
giving her to a shelter would be a bad idea. they know that people wont buy an old dog and it would be the first to be put don by them. can't you train her? whats wrong with her?
Dont put her down, her life is still ful and has a longntime ahead of her, try investing in a pet house, with a carpet and a small cage, train her to go to the toilet in a certain spot, if you do look for ahouse, advertise to a good home only, discuss the situation with respective people, and see how teh dog likes the house and family, you should be able to visit and perhaps it owuld be beneficial to have a trial period of a week or two, this way you can see how the dog is taking the nbew family and if shes getting treated good.

I hope this helps, good luck, try the first before you decide to adopt her out.

Also, you could share her, if you have a famliy who likes her, that way yopu can still visit and maybe every few weeks take her for wlaks and have niht stays at your house.

My nanna did this with her dog, moved into a nursing home, and her dog lives with an old friend of hers, (younger friend, but when she use to live in teh same street). this has worked for her, and the dog is allowed to visit nana too!
Well first things first i would never put down a dog that is health. Second ask some friends or family if they want the dog cuz the closer to you the more you can see your doggy. Then if that doesnt work bring you dog to a no-kill shelter then she can have the chance ya know. And no matter how long or short of time it takes you will find her or him a good home. You also might want to try putting an add in a paper or online too. So many people are looking for pets so you never know. Don't give up thats a lil life too.

I have to get rid of a 100lb, 4 year old dog.?

Any suggestions on how to get rid of a dog this big? I have two dogs and this one is causing problems with my kids and the other dog. I would like to find someone to take him but have been unsuccessful doing so.
Answers:
You should go to Dogster and create a page for him and list him as being available for adoption...

BUT

be honest about his personality...
explain why you are letting him go so the people who take him will know if they can handle him or not...

or
turn him over to a rescue group
or to the SPCA or Humane Society in your area.

Two of my dogs are that size, but you didn't say what breed your dog is. I love big dogs of this one breed, but not all large brees would appeal to me. Please add that to your question as you might find someone who would be interested who's reading these questions.. BUT
they need to know what breed. There are some breeds I will not consider... breed tells a lot about personality and this is important information the person who might consider rehoming your dog needs to know...
"Get rid off" I really hate those words when referring to what is suppose to be a member of your family. I don't think you have enough info posted on why you want to re-home your dog for anyone to intelligently reply.
try a rescue org. theres rescues for all types of breed. he might be a problem to you, but he could very well be the best thing to someone else. just remember humane societies and shelters euthanize. to me thats just not an option.
Befor deciding to "get rid" of him. Try training him instead. He needs to be told by you and the rest of the human members of the family who is boss. Do some research on dominance and have you and your family practice it. It sounds to me like you have a dog that is overly dominant over your whole family, you included.
Try to see if your local animal shelter will take him and put him up for adoption. Chances are he Will find a new family that will love to have him.
Sorry you have to get rid of him it seems that with some training he could be a great dog.
Just don't euthanize him because there will be someone out there that will love to have him.
Have you tried working with a trainer. Usually dogs will be less liable to cause trouble if you step up to the alpha position. Google Nothing In Life is Free for now.

Suggestions for "getting rid of a dog"??? Nope, I've kept mine for life and trained all of them.

Exercise it and tire it out, it will be less likely to cause trouble.
Train it and neuter it.

Good luck finding a home for him.few people can take on dogs that large that are untrained and unreliable.

I've kept up to 6 dogs in the house and never allowed them to start anything...but I know some people have to learn to be a pack leader. And few people actually give their dogs enough exercise and training.

I have to dogs one is a ptibullXLab the other is a german shepardrdxrottixhuskey both are acting very weird?

They are both panting very heavily and farting barly eating i have been having problems with the neighbors who don't like my dogs they really have no reason not to but any ways i think that they may have been giving my dogs poison this just started a couple of days ago i am very worried about them they are not acting like themselfs they have beendrooling more then usual too they were digging right by my fence and no where else like they were lookin for something. Digging is not in either of their nature pls some one let me know what the sypmtoms are of poisoning i looked online and could't find really anything thank you all. or what the signs are for worms thnx again Brynn
Answers:
It does sound like possible poisoning. You really need to have them seen by a vet.
I promise you that you won't be sorry of you take them in, but may be really sorry of you don't..
You need to get them to a vet NOW, preferably yesterday.

If you suspect anyone could have given them something, time might be very precious. Someone could have thrown something over the fence, and if it is anti-freeze, for instance, it is CRUCIAL to the animals that they get treated ASAP - please don't hesitate to take them in - you might find yourself without dogs if you don't.
I wish your pups a spedy recovery.
I would take them to a vet if i thought they might have been poisoned. i would not take any chances! The vet can let you know how to handle the neighbors in worst case scenario.
OMG,, drooling, etc.. is a sign of poisoning... keep them away from the fence and neighbor for a few days and see what happens,,, i hope to god that your neighbors wouldn't stoop so low...
SEE YOUR VET!
If it started a couple of days ago and they were poisoned you would be too late.

I have one dog that only digs when she is hot. the under layers of the soil are cooler. The temperature has just started going up here and mine are panting too. To the point they want to lay in my bed pant and keep me awake with their hot breath and vibrating the bed. Make sure they have plenty of water. I eat less when its hot to.
