Go to any local shelter many of them they do not euthanize because there are still places they can live. People that work at shelters often try to save them from he blue juice. We get calls constantly someone trying to save this or that. Many workers take dogs home to save them.

There are tons of pit rescues!! Rescue one, they are usually fostered in someones home with their families and other pets to get a definite on their personality and disposition. They will set you up with the ones that fit you and your lifestyle.

Poodles were once used in the military before GSD. A standard poodle is quite a force to be reconed with. And I would be more likely to rough house witha pit than a standard poodle. Their hair grows to prtect them when in fights and in murky war conditions. Don't ever underestimate one.
a poodle is less agressive i fink

There are plenty of good pits and pit mixes in shelters across the country. Give one a chance! There's no pet quite like a shelter pet.
well good PITS ARE ONLYAGGRESIVE IF YOU RAISE THEM THAT WAY i have had 2 myself but i have alot of friends who own them and the let children climb all over them pull their tail etc and never once growled or bit someone its them d*mn people who abuse them thats why everyone is so afraid of them:(
Search your local shelter. There are so many pit/pit mixes - they all need a chance.

My advice to you is to research and learn as much about this breed BEFORE adopting one. A responsible owner would equal a responsible dog.
a good blood line would include gotti or razors edge in my opinion. you can see my dogs bloodline at my website, www.bluebeastpitbulls.com , the bloodline would not make the dog more or less aggressive, it is all on how you raise them, my pits are very lovable and even pull children around in wagons. Even if you did buy a pit from a backyard breeder, it could very well be a good dog if given the love and attention all dogs need, just considered one more pit bull saved from the fighting pit. Good luck on finding one, you wont regret it, they are awsome dogs.
Good job on choosing a pit. You are correct about not buying from a backyard breeder. You're going to have to research pit breeders in your area. Check with their vet. Get references. Reputable breeders will have no problem doing this.

Shelter dogs can be great, but in a pit you want to make sure the dog is at least 2 years old. Shelters and rescues do a good job of assessing the dogs disposition, but a gamey pit may not turn until they are 18-24 months old.

Also, unfortunately Lita is wrong. A poorly bred pit can and will turn gamey, no matter how its treated. This is unfortunate and sad. It comes from genetic and mental defects cause by poor breeding. This is not only true with pits, but with all dogs, pitws are just notorious for it.

Good luck with your new dog. I'm sure he'll bring you years of love and affection.
i have 2 pits and have had many more and they dont have papers one i got from the shelter and the other was her puppy theres nothing wrong with back yard breeders im not saying go to a junk yard to get a dog but if you go to a person online there just going to charge you triple the price i didnt breed my dog for money i did cause i wanted a dog that looked just like her and she has beautiful blue eyes but i sold the puppies to ppl who would take care of them you can tell what type of ppl your buying a puppy from so its not like there going to scam you without you knowing and if you go to the shelter the dogs most likly will be full grown i would say just check your local paper for pitbulls and ask the people to send you pictures of the pups and alot of ppl now and days have are akc etc registered and thats good also good luck
I have an 8 month old pitbull and she is awesome!!!

Your best bet is to go to www.petfinder.com you can narrow your search by breed and make sure its local.

I wouldnt worry too much about blood lines and aggressiveness. I have no clue about the blood lines on my pit and she is fine. Aggression has nothing to do with blood lines or breeding. Aggression is all in the way the dog is raised. With love, attention and the proper dicipline, you pit will be a wonderful pet. Pits get a very bad name because back yard breeders breed them to fight. Pits have the ability to be the most lovable, protecting and norturing animals just as any other pet. The only difference between a pit and any other dog is their strength. They are all muscle. so its very important to get them trained early so you can handle them.

Also some shelters only adopt pits so they can give them a 2nd chance. If you go through a shelter, its much cheaper and they can give you really good advice on caring for them. Petfinder will help you with that. Its all shelters.

also, they need alot of exercise, not just walking but alot of running. Obediance training is a good idea with any dog. I took mine to petsmart. It was $100 for 8 sessions. My little girl is an angel and always on her best behavior. She even gets along with my 2 cats!

Oh and remember to spay or neuter!!! That helps calm them down a bit too!

Hope this helped.
Good Luck!!!
The pitbulls you would be able to acquire are all back yard bred. Most of them are, as they are the most over bred dog in America today.

My suggestion? Visit http://www.pbrc.net and look at the listings there. The dogs up for adoption have been temperment tested in most cases, and fostered in home to see how they do with family life, children, other animals, etc.

I really suggest staying away from breeders and adopting instead. They do have puppies listed a lot of times, because many times whole litters of pit bull puppies wind up in foster care, as they were dumped at local shelters because they either did not sell or the owners got into trouble.

Human aggression in pit bull breeds is NEVER allowable!! Many of the breeders nowadays are breeding human aggressive dogs, and this is part of the large downfall of the pit bull breeds. Avoid low and wides, big headed dogs, and people who sell you on the size of the dogs head...dogs bred to be huge, blocky, short and squatty are badly inbred, or mixes that should never have been bred to being with.

Dogs like this have lots of emotional and health problems due to the poor breeding and the greed to make a quick buck off of a fad that their makers have.

Good luck!
That sly smile, those determined eyes, that unwaning pleasure to please... the mere quality and characteristics of the APBT have evoked more human emotional, rational, and irrational response than any other breed that exists today. By no means are these dogs people-haters or people-eaters. Their natural aggressive tendencies are toward other dogs and animals, not people. However if they are properly socialized they will not even be aggressive with them. These are truly quality companions for quality owners only! The American Pit Bull Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, it is always eager to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. Highly protective of his owners and the owner's property, it will fight an enemy to the death.
