I just got a new west highland white terrier puppy. He is 8 weeks old and is perfect, besides his pooping.?

He poops about 6 times an hour, and he seems to strain himself when he poops. He sometimes whimpers. He isn't constipated because each time he tries, he poops. The poop isn't very hard or very soft, it's right about in the middle. I don't understand what would be making this happen. He eats fine, doesn't throw up, and is active. He just has this pooping problem.

How much and how often do you feed him? Are you just keeping the bowl full, all of the time. If so, try feeding him smaller amounts, 2 or 3 times a day. Try to stick to a schedule and your puppy's pooping should become more regular.
If you are already feeding him on a schedule, then maybe he needs to be seen by a vet.

What kind of food are you feeding? Low quality foods lead to more waste production. You may need to switch brands (gradually, of course).
What JTBW said...i have a question...Did you get your westie from a breeder?
It could be the food. I own a westie as well. He will be 2yrs old in July. My vet told me to keep mines on dry puppy food with mixed with a little water. Since I've had him he has had stomach problems a couple of times (runny stool) and I took him to the vet. She put him on special dog food. I can't remember the name (its at petsmart) if that helps. He hated it because it is very bland. but it did clear up his soft stool.
Have you ever considered that the puppies diet might have something to do with it? Most dogs have digestion problems when switching diets. It's probably that he was recently switched to solid food and his body's trying to cope. Make sure he gets plenty of water too. I hope this helped.

SEE YOUR VET!

Your puppy is probably loaded with internal parasites that you can't see. He also needs all his shots otherwise he can get things like Parvo which will kill him.

Work on crate training.
