I just got a black lab mix from a shelter and now she is sneezing and snotting all over??

She is an 8 month old pup and her distemper and bordatella shots are up to date, the only thing she hasn't gotten yet is her rabies shot. she will get that in june. Why is she sneezing and runny? She sleeps a lot as well. Her wellness vet appointment isn't for another week and I don't know much about dogs. I've heard that it's safe to give dogs benadryl but I don't know how much she weighs. I can just say that she stands with her back to my knees. And is average size for an 8 month old black lab. Any suggestions or advice? She doesn't have the symptoms of kennel cough as described on the sites I've looked up. Not really coughing too much, although she does have a coughing fit late evening that sounds like she's going to vomit. What do ya'll think???
Answers:
Kennel cough is a generic term for hundreds of viruses. She probably has it even though she has has a bordatella vaccine. It's not fatal, pretty much treat it like a bad cold. NO Benedryl. Not a good idea unless you have the dosage by a vet anyway. Just lots of fluids and love. She'll be fine. Fresh air and sunshine help. Maybe a bath.

Thank-you for adopting your dog and saving a life.
has she been wormed?? I'd take her to the place you got her from , or a vet..
good luck.. and i wouldnt do the Benadryl unless a vet tells you to.
There are several dog illnesses that vaccinations do not cover. Most of them are not lethal. Of course dogs can have hay fever too.

You can give her one benadryl every 4-6 hours, but I would call and ask them to move up her wellness exam because she might need antibiotics
It sounds like Kennel Cough or an upper respirtory infection to me. Bordatella is one of those vaccines that helps prevent the infection but the illness is like the flu - many strains are out there. Many of the dogs that came into our shelter ended up with it within 5-10 days regardless of their vaccination history.

However - I'm not a vet and I haven't seen your dog... I'm just guessing based on what you are describing and my experience with rescue dogs and dogs in general.

I'd move my vet appointment up to today or tomorrow and nip this thing in the bud. It's easier to treat something when it first starts than when it gets worse.

Your vet is always your best bet. Never subsitute advice online for your vet's. It's not safe for your dog. Give your vet a call and let them help.

Best of luck and thanks for rescuing a dog!
About a month ago, I got a 4 year old black lab mix from the humane society. He was a stray(tho, he is housed trained and knows many commands.) After a couple of days of adjustment, he seemed to be doing well and then he started to cough and sneeze ALOT. I tried not to be worried but I was. I called my vet and she said that it being early spring, he may just have a cold, but that I should watch him and if it got worse or lasted longer than 5 days, I should bring him in. Thank goodness, he seems to be doing fine now.
