I know that puppies cant see open their eyes before 2 weeks, but is it true that they can't hear?

Answers:
They can't hear until their ears are starting to open. They do hear before they are opened entirely.

But even before that they can hear muffled sounds, and will look towards you when you talk. Probably feel the vibrations in the air and the warmth of your body and everything else too.
they can hear .X_X

believe it
That is correct. Pups are born with their ears closed. Once the eyes open at 10 to 14 days the ears will open a few days later.
They can hear, much better then humans. Many people don't know that because people think they cant hear or see. its true, puppies cant see untill about 2 weeks old, but they CAN indeed hear.
Their ears and eyes open about the same time. Mother nature has them well protected for the first couple of weeks. Pretty cool huh!
They start to hear a few days after their eyes open. That is so funny, to hear all the little yips and yaps that they suddenly discover they can make! There is quite a chorus, once they know they can make a noise.

I know my dog will come to me but not when there is other dogs?

some people think that i shouldn't let my dog off the leash if he wont come back to me. thing is, he does come back to me. if i say come (with some distractions) he will come. if i take him to the dog park, and call him, he will come to me. but if another dog comes along, he forgets he even has a home

little help?
Answers:
Your dog is only doing what comes naturally, what you need to do is make yourself the centre of his universe!! Practise training the recall when there are no distractions and where you can safely get him back.

If he is toy orientated use a favourite toy, call him and when he comes, gives him lots of praise and play with him with the toy.
If he is food orientated use a treat that he loves, not biscuits something soft, chopped up cocktail sausages are good or little bits of cheese, same as with the toy call him back too you, loads of praise and reward him.
Dogs are real opportunists and will always ask whats in it for me?
Once he is recalling to you whenever you call than start to introduce distractions.
i think we have the same dog
Kids are like that LOL. They never want to do what you say when there are other kids around. Peer group pressure!
You and your dog need to go to obedience training. You can find classes through your local K-9 club. A good instructor will teach you how to work your dog on and off the leash.
You need to go back to basics. He thinks he can come back to you when he wants and on his terms. Keep him on a long line and MAKE him come back when you call him. Reward him with magnanimous praise or a treat when he does it correctly. Next time he doesn't come STRAIGHT back you go and get him, put him on the lead and walk him right home. Punishment is 'No obedience, no walkies'!
mabe the dog is shy or scared. or does not want to get involved with other dogs. maybe his too used to being d only dog! or try to have his fav treat in ur hand when another dog is nearby if he comes then he achieved alittle smthg there.
you need to join a dog training club where you will have other dogs around so he will learn to come to you not go and see other dogs
Bribe him with treats
I have this problem with my dog,we seem to be making progress though as the other day he ignored a dog!! The problem with dogs running up to every dog they see,is that not all dogs are friendly your dog may run into the wrong dog one day which could have terrible consequences. When we see a dog in the distance were not familiar with we put our dog back on the lead, for everyones sake.Start by reinforcing your dogs recall, our dog was also very good with no other dogs around but we strengthened that by practising it even more, have treats with you and whenever he comes to you, reward him.Don't always put your dog back on the lead when he comes to you,as he will soon learn that whenever he comes you end the fun!!Make his walks more interesting, take toys, training aids whatever your dog likes, play with him so that he's focused on you and forgets about other dogs being around. If you see other dogs in the distance put your dog back on the lead and ask the owner if there allowed to play or not, your dog needs to know you control all interactions with other dogs.Good luck.
Don't feed him for a day, this may sound cruel but it is better than him running off into a busy road when distracted.
The next day, take some food he loves, preferably meat, not dog biscuits with you to the park and wait until other dogs are nearby.
Give him some meat and let him off the lead. Throw a ball and call him over and give him more meat. Feed him a whole meal by repeating this with other dogs nearby. This way he will associate you calling him with the meat you fed him. Next time a dog comes and you call, he will think of meat and will come back to you.

I know most Terriers are hypoallergenic but are pit bull terriers?

Answers:
Here is a list of dogs good for allergy sufferers:
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/allergy.htm...

Please note: One person's allergies may vary greatly from another person's. It is always wise to visit the dog to see if you are allergic to it before you bring it home.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is not listed.
No, not at all. Hair is very course and falls out.
no dog is hypoallergenic, it is a mythso people will buy them, poeple with allergies are allergic to the dogs saliva and urine droplets.
Nope. Actually they are pretty bad.

I know it's silly to waste a question on this but I REALLY want to know...?

How come so many people in the Pet section of this website ask questions on here when their dog is vomiting blood or having a seizure instead of going to the vet?? Sometimes I think this website may have been the worst thing that could have happened for situations like this! 9/10 of the "answers" that I (and most other people) give to any questions in the cat/dog area at least is TAKE IT TO A VET! I mean, I realize it could be expensive, but really...it's common sense! If your child were throwing up blood, would you say "Oh, it's too expensive, I can't take her to the hospital, I'll ask them what to do on Yahoo!" Sorry...but does this bother anyone else as much as it does me? Just take the darn thing to a vet already! And if I read one more question that ends with "And don't say take it to a vet I want the real answer" I'm going to scream!
Answers:
I agree. It is the same with most of the other sections.

Automotive, for instance:
"My car starts on fire every time I start it. I have no mechanical aptitude, but how do I fix it? DONT TELL ME TO TAKE IT TO THE MECHANIC!"

Or In Psychology:
"What should I do? I hear voices and want to kill myself!"

Gee, professor, maybe you should get some professional help and not ask a group of 15 year olds (who can't be bothered to do a simple google search the majority of the time) on the internet.

Wow, you made me rant. *blushes*
It's because people are inherently stupid. You make a good point.
Wow yeah I haven't run into any of those questions, but that would be annoying. Seriously, people can be crazy sometimes. :/
One thing about animals THEY ARE NOT CHILDREN!
I will take my child to the doctor way before I take my critter in.You would have to sit and think which you would take to the doctor first?? I was agreeing with you until you made this statement!!
I so totally agree with you.
I know, I think the same thing. In the last three days, I've probably said five times, TAKE IT TO THE VET NOW!

People letting animals breed freely, asking questions that your vet should be answering, etc. Those bug me, but atleast they are turning somewhere for the answers instead of just letting the problem go untreated, and I do think some of the time, they get the hint and take the cat or dog to the vet.

Nobody should say they cant afford to take their animal to the vet, if you cant afford to take care of an animal, you shouldnt have it as a pet! Asking about behavioral things, and stuff like that, I understand but if you are saying HELP, or QUICK then you know you dont need to be asking, you need to be sitting at the vets office, and people there is ALWAYS a vet open, somewhere near you, even in the middle of the night. :)
My cat slammed his paw in a window and I took him at 3am to an emergency vet, had to drive 20 miles out, but there is always a place open for emergencies.
Because the vast majority of people are incredibly stupid.
I agree completely.

The only things that's worse are the people who answer these questions with "My dog did that once too, it will be fine".or other completely ignorant answers.
My child is throwing up blood now, and I see no problem with surfing the web while she is in pain. Is that wrong?!!
Oh, people with that kind of attitude with their dogs make me crazy, and so many people do that here.
I am also sick of the breeding questions. If you have to ask when you should breed you dog, you don't know enough to do it, so go get it fixed already!!!
And the people that get mad when you just point out the truth make me never want to come back here.
Someone reported my answer as abusive when I dared suggest that not taking your dog to the vet was abusive when they are suffering from painful mange, yet they could afford their internet bill!! How dare I say that! But, I'm the abusive one. Who's dog is in pain while they are in on their computer?!!! Not me!!
Whewww, that was a tirade. Sorry.
Yes, I agree with you, it is VERY annoying.
If your pet is injured. TAKE IT TO THE VET or an emergency 24 hour pet clinic. Do not wait. Do not go to yahoo looking for an easy fix.

This animal put its existance in your hands. You are responsible for its LIFE.

You can't put a value on life. You can't put a value on friendship and trust...the things this animal has given to you.

Vets have options for people short on money. NEVER let money come in the way of treatment for an injured animal. If you can't afford payment plans, in many cases you can sign the animal over to an org like ASPCA who will cover the cost of treatment.

WIthholding treatment of a sick animal IS animal abuse, and you CAN be charged with cruelty in many states.

So... for crying out loud... just take the poor thing to a vet. >_%26lt;

PS. if you have a perfectly healthy animal in your home but KNOW you cant afford to take it to a vet, should it get sick...then YOU SHOULD NOT BE HAVING PETS. Duh.
I agree with you. If people are going to be pet owners, they need to be responsible pet owners and if their pets are ill, they need to take them to the vet. I too hate it when they end their question with "don't tell me to take the dog/cat to the vet". I can understand someone wanting to ask questions about house breaking, obedience training, what type of food to feed their pet, etc. but to ask questions about obviously ill pets...this is not the place.
Well, I too get upset when I see some of these questions, but... let's not be so quick to judge.

Some people are uneasy because their pets don't speak, and can't tell them how they really feel, and they hope that by connecting with people out here they might be given some ideas. Most human mothers have at least one funny story about taking their brand new baby to the doctor to be told it was something stupid like the hiccups. Maybe some people don't have money to spend on getting their animal's hiccups treated, so they want some ideas first.

I also think many, many of these questions come from young people who aren't able to take their animals to the vet's, or whose parents are about to the the animals to get help but who are terribly nervous, understandably upset, feel extremely powerless, and are looking for answers. Some just need reassurance, or to know someone else has been there.

To be fair, although i also agree that "vomiting blood" requires emergency attention, I've read many "TAKE THE ANIMAL TO THE VET" when the problem described in the question really didn't warrant that kind of extreme reaction.

Some people really are ignorant, or stupid. Does that mean they don't deserve help, or advice? If that's how you feel, then don't bother answering, that's all.
Many people agree with you, this question has been posted lots of times, including by me!

It bothers me very much, it's the reason I registered with Yahoo, to try to talk some sense into people!

Chalice
Good point-it irritates me too. Hey people!! When you are throwing up blood-maybe instead of going to hospital someone should make you wait and suffer and ask questions on the PetQnA.com page.

People need to analyze any pet medical problems like this-If it were me-what would I do? If the answer is "Go to the hospital. Then for God's sake take your pet to vet-don't waste precious time waiting for answers!!
I often read questions on here where i too write "take it to the vet". I then sit and ponder if it is some idiot just posting to wind animal lovers up.
I agree if you can't afford to take an animal to the vet dog/cat/rabbit whatever it be then don't have a pet.. and if your considering a pet take out pet Insurance!!
You have an excellent point..i have seen some really stupid questions of people asking what to do for their animal when they are bleeding all over the place or crying as though they are in serious pain..Common sense tells you to call or take them to the vet

Good question!
i totally agree
Aw,honey...people here are IGNORANT *%26* STUPID! Not to mention LAZY %26 CHEAP!
There are also a bunch of SISSIES,who rush off to vet,SCREAMING over a bleeding TOENAIL!!-LMAO!

Ignorance is CURABLE but the vast majority will actually FIGHT you to KEEP their IDIOCY intact.
All you can do is keep DOPE-SLAPPING the morons %26 hoping you can save ONE animal from them...ONE dog at a time.

Do NOT let the morons win...there are more of them but natural selection MUST prevail %26 they WILL die off...eventually.

I know a pet owner who hits her dog with her hand isn't there a high possibilty that the dog may bite her one

Answers:
it very well could. usually they will just cower though.
Why is she hitting it?
Unless the dog feels very threatened, he may bite her. She shouldn't be hitting her dog in the first place. She obviously doesnt know how to take care of a dog. I hope the dog bites her, though.
It depends on the dog, and her attitude when she hits the dog, if she makes the dog feel overly threatened, he may bite... she should be safe as long as she doesn't like back him into a corner or something.
yeah if the dog ever gets mad enough it might, but if its scared of her then no
The person is going to create a fearful dog and NEVER gain it's trust. And YES! she could eaily be bitten.

Gently suggest she go to a training class and learn positive training! It will make a world of difference to both of them.
The dog that fears the hand will bite it!
i certainly hope so!
I hope so. what in training makes people think it is ok to hit their pets? a properly trained animal will obey and a pet owner who thinks hitting will train their dog is only teaching their animal to fear them and fear aggression will emerge and the animal will and as it should lash out at them. man why are people too lazy to take on the responsiblity of a pet. it drives me mad!
If the dog doesn't bite her it should!! She should not be hitting that poor dog for any reason. The dog would be much better off placed in a new home.Hope she doesn't have kids or plans to. Maybe she should go to some anger management classes...
I'm ok with the swatting with the rolled up newspaper, which to me is more symbolic to a dog than an actual threat. It is unfair to the dog to be smacked as a punishment and one day the dog will meet force with force. I have a friend who doesn't have her dog fixed, he tries to hump everything in sight, and her and her husband smack him with a flip flop (among other things) when he does it, although he's only doing what nature intended, he doesn't understand that it's inappropriate. The poor thing is hand shy.
Animal abuse. Report her before her or the dog gets badly injured
i hope it does
This person does not deserve a dog plain %26 simple, If any person cannot be bothered walking there dog, taking to the vets when needed, or just smacking it for the hell of it they don't deserve the love a dog can give.

I hope it does bite her! teach her a lesson!.

You do not have to hit a dog to make it understand. any person should treat there dog with the respect, they would themselves expect off someone.

A dog will attack its owner if it feels threatened. Wouldn't you?

It takes a lot for a dog to attack but it will get tired of being mistreated %26 then will start to fight back.

Don't really blame it though could you?

She needs to be reported to the correct authorities %26 the dog removed from her home so someone could adopt the dog %26 give it a loving home before she does some major harm to this poor dog.
good for the dog if it does bite her
The dog should bite her. Anyone who hits an animal should not have animals.
yes there is a high possibility!! Only though because the dog is being abused! end this, now. people can got to jail for that.
The poor dog may bite her, or it may never bite her and instead become an emotional mess, cowering every time the woman comes near it. Have you reported her yet? If not, why not?

I Knew a Person had a small dog that?

liked to Hump on everything From Furniture to people what is the cure for this Symtom.
Answers:
get it neutered and then train it not to.
.
Either train from an early age not to do that, or neuter it.
Neutering often helps, but it does not always stop it. Distraction works well, but when they are not neutered little will stop it. Even females do it. It is often a dominance thing.
The cure is to get him neuterd! It is so much better for him! He will be happier, calmer, and less likely to go around serching for things (and girl dogs) to hump. He also won't get a testical desese. And unless the person was a profesional breeder, it is the best thing to do.
Buy less attractive furniture.

http://www.bigmodern.com
This is actually considered a show of dominance and can be a possible behavioral problem.

Neutering or spaying the animal may not permanently resolve the issue, but it will help.

You'll also want to establish dominance in the household, and apply the appropriate corrective measure to help fix this kind of behavior.

Try talking with an animal behaviorist at your local vet/shelter to see how they can provide you with help and training ideas.

Hope this helps!

I kind of lost my dog around fayetteville, AR have you seen him?

Answers:
I m with some of the others how can you just kind of lost your dog. If you were that irresponsible to loose your dog kind of then you probally dont need it back. It is better off if its found a good home. Did it even have tags on it? Why are you waiting this long to look for it.
How do you "kind of" lose your dog "around" Fayetteville? All dogs should be on a leash or in a fenced yard.
Soorry about your dog. I hope you will be able to find him.
How do you kind of lose a dog?

You sound like a troll too. Stop using the word like so much.
I'm sorry about your dog. Put a lost ad in the newspaper or something. I'm sorry but if it's been four months... maybe somebody found him and is giving him a nice home. One time my friend lost his dog and about two weeks later he was sitting in school when all of a sudden his dog jumps in the window and he was like "my dog!" but then it escaped and he hasn't seen it since. That was about two years ago. Anyways put up fliers around where you lost him. Good luck I hope you find him.

I keep calling dogs she?

The dogs never seem to mind.
In fact, you could call them stupid and they will still lick your face. Dogs are cool.

People react, always correcting me about what sex I call the dog.
Personally, I could care less whether the dog is male or female as I do not plan on having sex with it. The dog could be gay for all I really care.

People call inantimate objects she; as in ships or other.
Should I be correcting people as to the gender of a ship?

The only thing that might be of interest that if the dog is male and in heat. That would be of interest.
Answers:
Dogs still lick your face when you call them that because they have no idea what you are saying. They dont even know what you are. So they think you are just another dog. What is sad is you call it stupid but it still licks your face and that means they love you! Thats okay though, they dont know what your saying so it doesnt matter. Start calling everything a *****! It is the same as a female dog! Then see how people correct you!
funny stuff
My mom has always called cats "she" and dogs "he". These days most animals have had their rights to gender snipped away. You are free to call them "It".
Well the dogs you are calling she are not inantimate objects like ships they are living creatures that are actually male or female.

I just saw a dog at the local APL?

I really wanted to adopt her and she did well with my children and me. A lady came out and checked out my house and yard and said she would email me the application but I have not heard anything. Does anyone know what may cause her not to want me to have this dog?

I have a completely fenced in back yard. There is pleanty of space for the dog to run back there. I love to walk as it is and she would go with me. We have a nice size house. I'm just curious as to what may have caused her not to send the information to me so that I could get this dog.

I am going to call her but just wanted some advice from here.
Answers:
It sounds to me like you'd make an ideal home for a dog! Call her back and ask why you haven't heard anything. Good luck getting the dog you wanted, but if you don't, keep on trying! There's lots of dogs out there desperately in need of good homes!
I'd call back also. I hope you do get the dog. Just a thought since I can't think of another reason, were the children behaving while she was there?
How long ago was it? Sometimes these things take time. The only way to know for sure is to ask her. There are also more considerations that just the physical environment. How much experience do you have with dogs? How old are your children? Where was the dog going to sleep? Does the dog you are looking at have health issues that you may not have been able to deal with? Good luck.
possibly other dogs or doors that maybe are like messed up, or you have way too much things lying around that could be harmful to your dogs health that it could eat smell or choke on. For instance, plastic bags, non dog food crumbs, pillows with foam beads in them, wires, or she has a busy schedule and is going to call or email soon. There is no reason why they should not reply unless something happened to her computer or she hasnt decided or you didnt recieve the message i would suggest calling
i have a feeling that she is perfectly fine with your family and your setup, but just has not had time to email you the application. Give it some time. Buying a dog should be no rush. Give a week or two and if she still does not call, go back to the APL and ask her whats going on.
From what you're saying it seems like the whole inspection posses went well. Those things do take time. Also the lady is probably busy, most likely she has to inspect other houses and try to place other dogs and do things like that.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry so much and just call her and find out. I hope that you get your dog!
Maybe she already found a home for it or it possibly doesn't get along with cats. I would call back now because you never know what people are thinking until you talk to them. This sounds like a perfect environment for a pet and it seems that it will be loved and cared for.. I hope you get it
Call her back. Maybe she got the e-mail address wrong and is sitting there wondering why she has not heard from you. Also, did you check you spam folder? Maybe it got shipped over there accidentally/automatically. Good luck, and hopefully you get her! Sounds like you would make a good dog mommy!

I just realized my dog has licked one of is paw pads red.?

The past few days, I saw my dog was licking the fur of his paw. I didn't really notice anything about it, until I was scratching his belly just now and saw one of the pads of his paw was reddish pink! It isn't bleeding, and he doesn't limp, he walks just fine. Should I let him lick his paw or is this serious and I should take him to the vet?
Answers:
Itchy paws are usually an early sign of food or inhalant allergies, causing the dog to lick constantly to relieve the itch. Other possibilities include OCD or a foreign object or other injury to the paw. Sometimes just a tiny scratch can make them lick the paw red.

First thing you should do is look on the undersides of the ear flaps - if the skin is cobblestoned and red, then check the eyes and lips - if they too are red you have about a 90% positive diagnosis for allergies. If you find none of these other signs, then you are probably looking at something local to the paw. Either way, you should have your vet examine the dog tip to toes and determine the problem. The sooner you treat the irritant, the less likely your dog will develop secondary skin infection from the licking.
He could lick it raw so I think a vet vist is in order to see what going on. It could be allergies so your vet can give you something to help him .
Probably allergies.Give him a bath and 1/2 tab of Benedryl.
you should take him to the vet!Tell your dog I said I am sorry for him!
Is he a long haired dog? If he is you may want to check for matts in the pads (big clumps of hair that must be removed by clippers). He may have a piece of glass stuck in a pad, a prick or possibly a twig. Check out his paws and see if you feel anything, if not take him to the vet before he starting eating at it. Good luck
I would recommend the vet.
It could be an allergy or something stuck in between his toes. If he keeps licking the paw will start to bleed and get infected.

Better not risk it.

+++
i would take him to the vet because if hes licking his paw pad to the point were it is red then theres probably something wrong with it. it doesnt sound serious but it could be.dogs will lick themselves raw if they have fleas but i dont think fleas would be on his paw pad,but things like worms travel through their feet.
Might be a food allergy, might be something else.. Did you check his foot to see if there is something in the pad. If you are feeding a dogfood that has allergens in it.. Corn, wheat etc.. try changing the food.. if you are feeding a good quality dogfood, you might want to take the dog to the vet if he keeps bugging his foot.
My Whippet was licking her foot and it ended up being a Foxtail way up in between her toes. The vet and I had to dig for it...poor dog. I waited and her foot swelled up badly.
If I had gotten her to the vet sooner, the Foxtail would have been easier to get out.

Licking to the point of redness is a sign of something...not normal. Examine the dog very closely, use a light to check crevices. Feel in between toes. Also check the dog's temp. for any fever (sign of infection).

My dog showed no sign of the Foxtail besides licking for a day before. Then the foot ballooned. I felt terrible. She's fine now. We were able to do it with local anesthetic.
If you have a cocker spaniel, like I do, then it could be allergy problems. My dog did the same thing and was given medicine for allergies and an antibiotic so infection wouldn't set in. Best to let a vet check him out because if symptoms are not visible (such as eyes and ears as you mentioned) could be something else. Sometimes dogs lick because of their nerves or boredom. Hard to tell. I'd go to vet before infection sets in his foot or worse his body.
I would call the vet and tell them the situation and ask if they think you should bring your dog in to see them .
He may have a little thorn in it. Gentley squeze it to see if he wimpers, if it consists take him too the vet
Your dog most likely has allergy's. My dog does it all the time. I just sprinkle a little corn starch on it and give her a half of a teaspoon of benedryl. approved by my vet. I would try this before taking your dog to the vet, if this don't work then consult your vet.

I just put my puppy to sleep UPDATE?

Thank you all so very much. It has helped me a lot, though crying while reading most responses, it soothed me. I will go on the two websites suggested. I am also going to print a picture and put it right next to the Rainbow Bridge poem on my dresser. Of course, I know I will continue to cry as it really hurts. Worst is tomorrow we are going to have Normandy cremated and bring his ashes home. I'm going to want to give him a kiss again and know he will be cold. I wish I had added a blanket before they put him in there. I didn't know one could cry so much. Where can I post a picture of him so you can see how beautiful he was, a black labrador?
Answers:
I am so sorry for your loss. You have to open a 360 account (free) from your profile page then download the picture to your 360 account then you can cut and paste it here.

You can also add his picture to your profile. Just add picture in profile and use his instead of yours. Then every time you answer a question, you see his picture. I use my Print"s picture on mine, as you can see.

I just put my puppy to sleep and need support?

Hi,
It has now been 48 hours since I've had to hold my puppy (13 yrs old) and feel him go. I've been crying so hard my eyes are swollen to the point where I don't look right. His name was Normandy and he screamed for a few seconds and his body was fighting. The doctor said it was due to him becoming disoriented, it was terrible and seconds after, he left. It is ripping inside of me. It's been really really hard. I know I did the right thing, but it hurts so much. Please confirm he didn't suffer and he knew we loved him. I'm so heartbroken.
Answers:
I'm sooooo sorry about your loss - I have a 12 1/2 year old lab and dread the day.

He didn't suffer - Hopefully this will help:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.
I know its hard, but you may just need some alone time. No one can tell you how you should feel, you just need to take things slowly, and if you feel like cring then cry, and it hasreally helped me to just take a long slow walk.
I'm so sorry. I've been through it a few times and it is never ever easy. It is Ok to feel grief - eventually it will subside and you'll have warm good memories of Normandy.

I also had a dog that struggled once and it bothered me too. I truly understand how you feel. You absolutely did the right and loving thing. Sometimes the right thing isn't easy.

You'll be in my thoughts today. Hang in there.
I am so sorry for your loss. i had to put my 14 yr old Husky to sleep and i miss her everyday. I still cry over her and always will. your dog was not in any pain, its just a reflex. Its just the humane thing to do, the greatest gift of love to give when you know they are suffering and you can do something to ease it. When you can give them no more you give them peace. let yourself grieve and miss him, then think of all he gave you and how lucky you were to have had such a sweet baby. One day when you see him again he will thank you for this last act of ultimate love...God bless
(HUGS)
I'm about to cry for you. thats hard, and don't be ashamed to let it out. he knows you loved him. and you did it bc you loved him so much you didnt want him to suffer. i'm sure you will see your puppy again. he'll wait for you. he loved you too.
Why was he put to sleep?
Oh my God I'm so sorry. Reading this made my eyes fill up with tears and I don't even know you.

Only time will heal this. I can tell you you did the right thing if your dog was ill and had lost his quality of life, though I don't suppose that will help you feel better at all.

I see a lot of euthanasias. I can tell you that the drug they used doesn't sting when it goes in or cause them to suffer in any way - it is in fact the best way to go, as natural death is often very unpleasant sadly. Sometimes older dogs do feel weird as they go and this makes them struggle or cry out - I honestly don't think it's because they are suffering, just feeling weird I think.

In time things will get better for you, and you will look back on all the good memories and smile, I promise. I hope you have people to look after you during this time.

God bless,
Chalice
Normandy is in my heart today.

This is the very worst part of loving so deeply.

Normandy knows you did what was best and is thanking you right now, for his new, painfree life. He's running around again, happy and without a care, just as he did when he was a pup.

He'll be there for you, always, in your dreams and when you are ready to let go and pass over he will be there to show you the ropes. I promise.

It's alright to cry your eyes out. Cry as much as you want, I know I am right now and I didn't even know Normandy. Indulge in your sorrow until the clouds in your heart clear and you are ready to smile again.

Then adopt a rescue and name him Normandy the second.

The more you love the more love that will be waiting for you when your time comes to rejoin all those who have gone before you.

Please take the time to go through some of your photos, pick a few, have them enlarged and framed and put them where you can talk to Normandy every day. He'll listen.
Awwww i feel sooo bad for u ,i have a almost 12 year old black lab, and i dont ever never want her to die, if u want to talk u can email me at wyandot_chick@yahoo.com
I am so sorry. I did the same with a cat a couple of years ago (she had cancer). It's always sad, but it does get better. You were with him; he knows you love him. The vet is right. The pentobarbitol doesn't hurt. Please give yourself permission to grieve. Losing a pet is so hard. You did the right thing. He's at peace now. And remember, we're all just a message away. Take care.
Susan
That's very odd...he should not have suffered. He should have been given a sedative before he was actually given the infection that stopped his heart. You need to call that vet back ASAP and find out what was going on, and consider legal action.

I know it is a tough time now. I had to put down a dog a couple of years ago. I still cry all the time, but it has gotten better with time. Time heals! I also suggest counseling, it is the best thing you can do right now.
So sorry for your lost--here's a website that has some beautiful soothing and helpful things to read --http://rainbowsbridge.com/poem.htm. ----about pets and animals
You poor thing. Like the others, I too feel your pain. I had to put my 15 1/2 year old baby down in October. I held her until she took her last breath. I still miss her.
I know another dog will never replace Normandy, but I hear that getting another dog right after you lose one, helps tons. If I was home during the day, I'd get one in a heartbeat. Hang in there.
If the vet knew what he was doing,I believe you're dog didn't suffer. It was just a normal reaction to the drugs. Just remember, Once they are gone, there is no memory of or pain of any kind what so ever. The main thing is wither or not you took care of you're pet while it was alive and with you. That's what you should dwell on now. Having you're pet put to sleep was very brave of you and humane as oppose to letting it suffer an agonizing death on it's on. The best way to get over the loss of a pet is to make you're self go and get another one. But Preferable not like the one you just lost because it may just remind you of him. Look back with fond memories, not on something you can't totally control. And you will be fine.
You did the right thing, im Very sorry for your lost hopefully you'll feel better soon...HUGS
I can't imagine how you feel, my Bichon is 12 years old and he is such a part of my family, I can only imagine what a void there is going to be. I love him so much, like a child. I feel so sorry for you but I don't think he suffered. I guess he was sick that's why you put him down? If he was sick he's in a better place now. I started thinking about this happening to my guy in Dec. and we went out and got a little puppy. I know that I would not be able to deal with losing him so If you have another puppy to take care of it will ease the pain. Another dog will never take his place in your heart but I think it will help. Its what he would want. Its going to take time before you feel better, but you'll meet again. Peace
Your puppy knew you loved it!! You don't have to worry about that!!
I had to put two of my dogs to sleep about 8 months apart. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do. I am 55 years old so it doesn't matter how old you are it hurts and hurts bad. It has been over two years and I cry every time I begin to think about my dogs. As I am writing to you I am crying.
I am sure you did the right thing. The puppy was suffering and in pain. The puppy is not in pain any more.
Your puppy is up in Heaven playing with my dogs. They are running, playing and having so much fun.
They are playing with all the little children that have left this world.
That is how I have to look at things!!
Sorry for your loss!!
Hi chthmeljen, happy Friday.
I am so sorry for your loss. You did the right thing and your boy did not suffer any more than was necessary due to your selfless decision. I held my Minor (100lb. ridge-back) in my arms last month when he took his last breath in the vet's office. Different animals react in different ways. My Minor tensed all up before he let go. The reaction is merely reflex, not emotional or painful for the beloved dog.
All the best to you. I will pray for you.
I hope you will bless and be blessed today.
i feel for you.
my wife recently bought a book for a neighbor's kid whose cat was run over - some book by Mr Rogers (you know, Mr Rogers? from PBS?) about losing a pet. It was geared towards kids, but the wife said it was a great book, very tasteful and helpful.
You did the right thing by not allowing your pet to suffer any longer than necessary. Be strong!
I know how you feel. Normandy was a part of you, and now that that part is gone, you feel as if you can never, ever, be whole again. Only time can mend a broken heart, but as I was reading this post with tears in my eyes, I remembered a poem in my "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul" that might help, even a bit. Here it is.

Judgement Day

On Judgement Day Saint Peter stands,
A list of virtues in his hands.
As all the souls in silence wait
To see who'll pass through heaven's gate.
"You will enter first," he says, "if you
can swear your heart was always true.
And you were constant to the end,
A steadfast, loyal, devoted friend.
Never spiteful, never mean,
Unchanging through good times and lean.
With no desire but this: to be
allowed to love eternally."
And this is why Saint Peter's hand
Throws wide teh heavenly portals, and
with wagging tails and shining eyes
the dogs walk into paradise.

Normandy is right along with these dogs. On some days you will feel his presence, trotting along beside you happily, and then you will know and be reassured, that Normandy's love for you will never end, and your love for him will always be there.
God bless you.
I understand what you are going through, I was 24 when my mom had to put my dog to sleep I had her since I was 9 years old. She lived to be 15 years old which is quite old. I didnt feel at the time that it was the right thing to do but looking back on it now I understand she is better off. It was nearly 5 years before I got another dog, now I have two. I hope everything gets better for you.
oh my, i am so sorry for your loss. animals know what is in our hearts better than we do, he knows you love him.
i have a little puppy now, and do not even want to think about loosing her.
my cat of 16 yrs died a few years ago, i was home from work with her, it took her a week to die. it was heart wrenching. we buried her close to home, she did not like to stray far. jer picture, and this poem, sits here by the computer for the last 4 years..
i wrote this poem, as i need to write when something breaks my heart.
the last dance
i helplessly watch as she dance the dance of death,
i wait for her last breath, hoping, fearing
she walks in circles
the soul searching for the way home
she walks, she stumbles
she lifts her head, she stumbles,
she slumps down, head bowed, she falls
she struggles back to her feet
she circles the wood stove, her favorite spot,
she reaches her little box bed, puts in one paw
then shakes and collapses
i guide her into her bed
she lays, wrapped in the sweatshirt of the one she loves most
she finally gives in, takes her last breath
and i though i had cried all of my tears

maybe i should have put her down, my heart told me that she needed to be home, the home we shared with this creature of love

god bless
you are in our thoughts and prayers

I just purchased a 9 week old chiuahua puppy which continually sratches, while it walks, sits, poops.?

She eats well and is affectionate but will not stop scratching.
Answers:
I'd check her for ticks and/or fleas. Sounds like she is miserable!
She probably needs to go to the vet and get a physical and wormed and some IZ's anyway, so make her an appointment and get all that taken care of (and ask about the itching).
Make sure she is on a quality food without corn or wheat, wheat gluten or rice protein, something like Canidae or Wellness. Most grocery store brands aren't really all that great for your dog.
She probably has ticks of fleas.
Brush her everyday with a flea brush
And take her a shower... Take her a shower once every 2 months.
And if that doesnt help, get a medicine alled" Frontline"
SOFTPAWS.COM%26#92;

Vinyl caps for your dog's nails.
I have 3 and they are known for having dry skin. put some veggie oil in the puppy's food or when you give it a bath put baby oil on it.
First check for fleas. If you don't see any fleas on your dog, look for any patches of hairloss. If your puppy is really itching and scratching up a storm she may have demodex. This is a mite (aka mange) that can be common with puppies.

Your vet can check for sure by doing a simple test.

Have her checked out. Demodex does not go away on its own, it just gets worse and spreads if it is not treated.

Also, if it is demodex, ask the vet about the kind of treatment. Usually it is a type of dip for mange called Mitaban or something similar. This type of dip can cause sedation, especially in little dogs, so have them watch her carefully. Or see if they can use something more gentle on her.
If you just purchased this puppy, you should call the breeder to alert him of the problem. Offer to send the vet bill for treatment or ask if he or she would prefer to provide treatment, You should always take a new puppy for a vet check within 72 hours of getting it. During that visit, your vet will likely find fleas and recommend a shampoo that is safe for such a young and small puppy. The safest shampoo is called Mycodex with Carboryl. Be very careful with flea shampoos on such a young puppy--they can be very dangerous.

If it is not fleas, but mange--return it to the vet as you will likely have a life long history of vet bills due to sores caused from scratching. Shame on that breeder.
There could be a few things wrong there ... Fleas, dry skin, or a skin problem.

If its fleas frontline seems to work the best.

If its dry skin try bathing the dog in the most moisturizing bath wash, addng baby oil to the bath, or even putting lotion on the dog after bathing although try to stay away from scented things.Try not to bath her too much its not good for their coat!

If the bathing does't work talk to your vet your chi probably has skin problems!.

I just need to know how long till I can wash my dog after I give him frontline?

Answers:
According to the Frontline site: For maximum effectiveness of frontline, do not bathe your dog or cat three days before or three days after applying. > http://www.discountpetmedicines.com/fron...
My vet said 3 days.
did you read the instructions? depends on size of the dog, lengh of the coat. i suggest you scrambl thru the bin and read the instructions
Doesn't it tell you on the packaging ?
48 hours is the minimum amount of time to wait. I use Frontline on my dogs also.
i think it's 24 hours, but it should say on the instructions inside the box. if not, call your vet.
it does tell you on the package, i always leave mine 48 hours.
give it about 2wks that shud be enuff time i use it o my 7mnth pup and i ussually wait 2/3 wks b4 i bath her
should be on the label? Ring your vets
If it is the spot on Frontline normal 3/4 days and if it is the spray all over Fronline normal best for 7 days.

Hope this helps
Normally it's best to bath your dog throughly before applying frontline and leave it for three days without washing your dog again.
Another option is to get the flee collar to prevent flees. It is as good as frontline and much cheaper compare to frontline.
When using frontline, you can not have washed a dog for 48 hrs before and for 48 hrs after application. Now the thing is it has nothing to do with the water. If your dog is that stinky, after a few hours, you can rinse your dog off, but you can not use any shampoos. The reason for this actually has nothing to do with the frontline at all, rather the fact that frontline is placed only on one spot on a dog, usually on the back of the shoulder blades, and then is carried to the rest of the dogs body by the oil in their skin and hair. Now if you give them a little rinse off bath, you have just eliminated the oil in the hair, but not the oil in the skin. So you will be fine, however, using shampoo will eliminate the oil in the skin as well and the frontline will not be able to spread to the rest of the dog. By the way, I would recommend Advantix as it also protects against mesquitoes
i use frontline for my westie and it says on the box 48hrs but i usually wait one more day.

I just moved.get the poop smell out!!!?

i just moved into a house.it did not smell initially.i watered the grass and both front and backyard REEEEEEK!! of dog smell. i know the house has been vacant for more than 2years. we did pick up a few dry dropping in the front, but none that we can see that got wet. PLEASE! HOW DO I GET THIS SMELL OUT??
Answers:
Purchase a box of the enzyme for septic tanks (RID-EX or other product). Please make sure that dogs, cats or young children won't be playing in your yard for a while - also, don't go out into your yard barefoot.

Sprinkle the enzyme on your yard and water. In about a week you will find the smell goes away. If you have any odor in your house, you can get enzymatic cleaner from a pet store for the flooring and walls.

You can also check with a yard care specialist. It is possible that a yard specific product exists. I've just always used RID-EX - I have 4 dogs.

Hope this helps.
probably steam cleaning or hiring a professional to get the job done.
Try a product c alled "Natures Miracle"..it's liquid and designed to disolve and eliminate the odor..it can be used inside and out.I've used it for many years and it has NEVER failed.
You can buy it at your local pet store or feed %26 grains..it does come in gallon sizes..do not dilute use full strength.
ewwwwwww.

i'm not sure you can.

I just moved into a new house and my dog pees (just a little) everytime you say her name or go near her.?

It's been 2 weeks now and neither comforting her nor punishing her has worked. We have carpeted floors so this is a HUGE problem. I've tried arranging her things so they're as close as possible to the old house and all the other tricks on the pet websites. I'm really at my wit's end...PLEASE HELP!!
Answers:
If she is a puppy ignore it. Submissive peeing is done when they are really excited. the only way to stop it is to ignore her until she is calm. If she is older you need to take her to the vet. She may have weakening of the bladder sphincter. In that case the vet will probably put her on some hormones to help. Good Luck
maybe your dog was afraid of you because you were not in your old house where the dog was used. maybe she think that you are a stranger!
She is nervous and scared, this will wear off in time, just be patient. If it dose not rectify it's self within another week or two, take her to the vet and get her checked out. When I moved, my cat hid for about two weeks, he would only come out in the dead of night to eat and use the litter box and was very skiddish but he got over it and now thinks he owns the place!
OK - Please stop punishing her. This is submissive urination and she cannot help it. She is not doing it because she is spiteful, she is doing it because she is afraid.
Take special care to not loom over her, ever. You don't say what size dog she is, but I'll presume that she is smaller than you. Instead of doing a 'normal' greeting, don't say a thing to her. Just kneel down and turn to the side so that you're not approaching her directly. Let her make the choice to come to you.
Be sure to never reach out for her, not until she's gained confidence after several weeks of this. Be sure to communicate this to every person who interacts with your dog.
Have you had her checked for a UTI?
Good luck! I've linked below to Turid Rugaas' site; lots of helpful info on there about canine body language and what we humans can do to help them to relax.
the first answer was what my vet told me to do when i moved and had the same problem.. its for attention and if you ingnore her she'll realize that her summisive peeing doesn't work
Sorry, but sometimes animals just need time to adjust. I'm sure that's not what you wanted hear, but it's true. I used to work for an animal shelter and new owners used to call asking why their new pet suddenly had bad bathroom habits. Definitely DON"T punish her. Keep a TV or radio on all the time as background noise. Maybe you could confine her to a non-carpeted room for a few days (bathroom, basement, kitchen, garage). Take her outside often if possible and let her have time to sniff and get used to her new environment inside and out. Does she have a kennel? It may seem mean to keep her in it for long periods of time, but it might just what she needs to feel safe in her new home.

As for your carpet Oreck (website and stores) have a special pet carpet cleaner that works really well. My husband owns a carpet cleaning business and it's the ONLY accpetable product on the market.
My dog does this also. Just let your dog outside. I don't know the name for it. Sorry. You will just have to clean up after your dog, and get used to it, because its not going to stop anytime soon. Here is a solution. Get another dog that is playful and about the same size as your dog. We did that and our dog didn't pee in the house as much. I mean don't punish your dog, because it may not be the dogs fault. Of course you will get frustrated, but remember the dog can't help it. Sad to say for us, the dog we got to play with her died...
Since you have carpeted floors, it would be best to strip them. Thats what we did to our whole house. I don't know if your dog has the same problem, but you MIGHT notice your dog chewing on stuff such as sheets soon. If your dog starts to do this, its obvious she/he wants to play.[This usually only happens at night when you're asleep.
Thats all I can tell you. I hope it helps!
she could be like my cocker spaniel she marked her territory every time we moved into a new house it is a pain in the a** even throw she is a female it is not uncommon as i ask the vet she will give up sooner or later good luck be passion %26 when she pees inside tell her no %26 put her outside for half an hour then if she does it when you let her back in just put her back out she will soon learn that she is only be put out for peeing inside
Here are some articles on submissive urination that gives insight into why and what to do to help correct, it won't happen overnight so be patient, scolding/punishment will only make the problem worse

I just inherited a 2yr old Chihuahua. she is so loving but when we tell her what to do she bites us.?

she shares the house with her brother who came from the same litter, an older dog, and 2 kids.
is there anything we can do to stop her from bitting or growling ?
Answers:
I breed Chihuahua's and I own #8. Get a spray bottle, and fill it with plain water. Whenever she disobeys you, just give her a couple of squirts, and say NO! I used to do that with my dogs, and now all I have to do is pick up the squirt bottle, and show it to them and they turn into little angels. I don't even have to do that anymore.
i have a chihuahua, too. he only bites when he feels cornered, scared, or has a bone. You need to tell her who is boss. when she growls, yell at her to stop. show her it will not be accepted. if she bites. say no loudly, and put her in her cage.
yess you can to break a dog you need to tell her whos boss. i kno this sounds very werid but to make a dog kno your the owner not him bite him behined his right ear for one seccond. not hard but to make him squeel. this dont mean bite him till he bleeds and if this dont work dont do it again! trust me and also email me l8ter for more info!
She sounds like a fear biter. She bites or growls when she feels threatened. She probably doesnt know how to take u just yet. U will have to earn her respect and trust and vice versa.
It may take some time since she is older, but it will happen eventually.
Try buying a book to help out with teaching an older dog discipline.
I agree you have to teach her who's boss. If you don't her behavior will never change. HAYYLEYYxboom is right. I bit my dog when she bit me. She looked at me like I was crazy, and has never done it again.
Watch Cesar Milan in Dog Whisperer in National Geographic.

It will definately help you out.
Ok I know I should post this in the "Jokes %26 Riddles" section, but i can't help thinking 'why should they have all the fun? Dog Lovers need a joke now %26 then too!
So here goes:

Three handsome male dogs are walking down the street when they see a beautiful, enticing, Girl Poodle.

The three male dogs fall all over themselves in an effort to be the one to reach her first, but end up arriving in front of her at the same time.

The males are speechless before her beauty, slobbering on themselves and hoping for just a glance from her in return.

Aware of her charms and her obvious effect on the three suitors, she decides to be kind and tells them, "The first one who can use the words 'liver' and 'cheese' together in an imaginative, intelligent sentence can go out with me."

The sturdy, muscular black Lab speaks up quickly and says, "I love liver and cheese."

"Oh, how childish," said the Girl Poodle. "That shows no imagination or intelligence whatsoever."

She turns to the tall, s hiny Golden Retriever and says "How well can you do?"

"Um. I HATE liver and cheese," blurts the Golden Retriever.

"My, my," said the Poodle. "I guess it's hopeless. That's just as dumb as the Lab's sentence."

She then turns to the last of the three dogs and says, "How about you, little guy?"

The last of the three, tiny in stature but big in fame and finesse, is the Taco Bell Chihuahua .

He gives her a smile, a sly wink, turns to the Golden Retriever and the Lab and says ..

so to answer your question : Maybe get a poodle ?
Oh, very loving, I don't think. If you care about your kids, take the animal to classes and get it trained, otherwise this will just get worse.

I just had to give my dog back to the ASPCA, I felt so bad..?

I have been on here and talked wonders about my pit bull, Sheena. She is a great dog, and a rescue dog to boot, however she had two problems, that when coupled together, spelled trouble..

1. Escape Artisit.

Chain link fence with electric fencing and underground fence, she climbed the fence and ignored the shock that makes me jump. It is illeagle to use tie-out in this area, so that is out of the picture. I had NO WAY of containing the dog, (She even chewed through 2x4's so a sheer wood fence is outta the question too.

2. She ignores ever verbal command while outside.

NOTHING worked, corrective means, good verbal praise, nothing. I am not inexperienced with dog, have had and raised them all my life. This dog was no mean, but would totally ignore you, not even glance in your direction when you talked, whistled, yelled, nothing.

I could easily see this having a bad result since I live in a small neighborhood. Do you guys think I did the correct thing.
Answers:
Its in our contract to check things whenever we want!!

This is just a dog that you had to walk to do business. You shouldn't have gotten rid of her for this. If you care you would conform to her needs too. A relationship has to have more than one side and I believe that its with our pets as well as people.
Pits have very, very strong skin--there's a good chance that she BARELY felt the shock, if at all. The way to have fixed the climbing problem would have been to get a taller fence--they can only climb so high before losing balance---with an inward-tilting "roof" made of wood or more chain link. It's not the prettiest thing in the world, but it does keep it inside since they cannot reach around that angle without falling down.

Dogs don't like to listen while outside. The way I have found to get them to come when they don't want to come is to yell, "Treat" (or whatever the equivalent for you is). You have to be sure to give them one afterwards, or they'll stop listening. I have yet to find a dog--even the most stubborn ones--who can resist a treat.

That said, replacing a fence is time consuming and expensive. You didn't do the wrong thing here, especially since it was a no-kill shelter. The things I just said are for future reference.
No, it's OK. Some dogs just do not work out in some home environments. The important thing is you tried what you could to solve the problem.

I know how hard it is to relinquish a dog. I too had to return an adoption dog - a really great sweet, nice dog - when you were around. Mine had extreme separation anxiety that the previous owner did not disclose and the humane society did not know about. He caused thousands of dollars of damage, destroyed our dog run, and even chewed through sheet metal I used to try and secure the gate. We weren't inexperienced either. We tried training and medication. The final straw was when he broke out, chased my cat and broke her tail. We both work full-time and we were in over our heads with that dog. He needed an owner that was around all the time and we couldn't provide that for him. So he went back to a humane society that was willing to find the right home for him.
you tryed .good for you .you did the right thing the only other thing to do was shoot it .
Are you sure she isn't deaf? If you don't train the ON leash, they obviously aren't going to obey off leash. They make chainlink kennels of various sizes. Our 10'x30' has a cover that is almost like trampline material as a sun shield.

Your dog, you did what you felt was right for your situation.
Yes you made a tough choice. You put your dog first, to keep her you would have to restrain her and watch her constantly. She would have no quality of life and it would be hard for you to sit by knowing she could have more. By letting her go, she can now be homed in a more suitable environment for her needs, where she will have room to run around and be secure. I respect you, you admitted that you could not cope with her so that she can have the best life possible. Do not let people tell you what you did was wrong, by being honest and by swallowing your pride you are an example to the rest of us.
Pits should never be adopted by people that do not know how to train dogs. They are very stubborn, willfull dogs. Your two problems had very simple solutions. 1) The dog should have been living inside with you and walked on a leash. 2) Obedience classes would have done wonders. There are classes for stubborn dogs.
Yes, under the circumstances you did the right thing by giving the dog up.
I'm sure giving up your dog was a very difficult decision. I just want to say "thank you" for returning her to a no-kill shelter instead of dumping her on the side of the road somewhere (or worse).

I Just Had My Dog Put To Sleep... How Do I Cope?

When I was 2, we had to put a dog down. I don't even remember her. But the dog we just had to put down today, she meant more to me than most people do. She was almost 15, and had more problems than you could shake a stick at. We had to do it, and now that she's gone... we knew it was coming, but now that it's, well, gone... what do I do?

P.S. We also have another dog who is turning 13 in a couple months. I think even she knows what happened.
Answers:
Wow.. That's a hard question.. It's hard you know.. I had a dog that had cancer, and we had to put her to sleep.. She could no longer eat, or walk, it hit her hard and fast and the only choice we had was to put her to sleep.. She would not get better.. It's a hard thing to get over.. I'll tell you, it's been 5 years now, and I still think ' what if I had done this ' or ' what if I had given her more time ' But you know what, nothing would have been any different.. It's been 5 years and I still cry today if someone mentions her name, or if someone wants to know what happened to her, or if I hear certain songs on the radio...

The problem with dogs, is that they don't live forever, and when they are gone, they take with them a chunk of your heart.. And you think you will never ever love a dog like you loved that dog.. You don't want to love another dog, cause it hurts do darned bad to lose them..

But the next thing you know you have this new dog that is stealing your heart away from you, no matter how hard you try to resist them, how hard to try to keep that distance and not let your self love them so much, and you can't remember how it happened and why you let it happen and then you forget about it and just love the new dog...

You don't get over it, you remember them forever, and then one day you look up and you are happy that you had the chance to spend time with that dog, had her share a part of your life and even tho she is gone, you at least know that you got to share in part of what she was, who she was and spend even that short time with her... Can't get it back, can't start over, will never meet a dog like that again, BUT, you at least got to share a very tiny piece of her life and felt love and loved her, before she was gone...
i know how u feel, and really only time can help u now, sorry about ur dog
I can assure you that your other dog knows what happened. They can sense these things.

Not really anything you can do to cope. Keep pictures of your dog around, keep your attention towards the one you still have (she may show signs of depression, as well).

I recently lost our dog, which we had for 12 yrs (her age was unknown, she was a stray we adopted).
I'd get another dog, hon. I always have two that are not close to the same age. I just lost one at 13, and am still heartbroken... You'll just have to cry alot... I still do. (No the other one does not know what is coming. relax... But YOU do, and that's the hard part.)
Grieve. There's nothing else you can do now, and love your other dog.

Just a side note, I would never have a dog put down, to me it is cruel and inhumane. If the dog is sick get it medicine if it's in pain, there are pain medicines for dogs. To me no dog should EVER have to be put down. Would you kill a family member if they were sick?
sometimes the best thing to do is cry
this happened to me too.i would just relax and try to get used to the fact that she's gone...only you can really know what you can handle though

as for your other dog i would just try to pay more attention to her so that she doesn't get lonley and even more sad
im sorry! try spending time with your other dog (animals know when something happens to one another, it happened with my cats). it will help your doggy cope with it and by making her feel better you will also feel better.
just think of the sweet time you had together and how it was better to have known her, than never to have known her.

All precious in life is the memories, just have found memories of her until you meet again.
I am so very sorry for your loss. I had to do this myself a few years ago when my Catahoula had Intestinal Bowel Disease. It is so sad and is much akin to losing a person. How to cope? Well the best answer I can give is to take one day at a time. It helped me to gather the dogs things up and put them away, so I didn't have to look at them constantly. In a few weeks or months you can go through those things and maybe donate or put them away in a memory box. I do recommend when you feel up to it to create a memory box. This is a box that you can decorate any way you like and place mementos of the dog in. The collar, tags, favorite toys whatever...
Talk to people who will understand what you are going through, especially other family members who are also hurting. Don't keep things bottled up and just try and think of the good times you had with your dog.

God Bless!
To answer your original questions "How Do I Cope". You cannot. You will begin a downward spiral of depression filled with prescription drugs washed down with alcohol. You will lose your job because of a careless car accident that you will be drunkenly responsible for. Your friends and family will comfort you, but to no avail. You will be begin cutting and not eating. You will lie on the floor thinking ideas about how now to think until it drives you insane.

But that is not what your dog would have wanted.

Your dog would want you to continue living and being the person that he/she always thought you were: Fantastic and vibrant.

Please take care of yourself during this episode. It does not matter how you grieve and for how long. All that matters is that you come out of it healthy. Make sure someone you trust is taking care of you during this episode so you stay safe. I am sorry to hear about your loss. That sucks.

It will hurt less later. But not today I am unfortunately.
I too had my beloved Benji put down due to old age and still cry for him after 3 years. I tend to think of the good times I had with him and also the funny moments we had. He is buried in the garden and I put flowers on his grave once a week. You will never forget your dog but the pain will go through time. Take it day by day and believe she is there, watching you..coz she is. Talk to her.she'll listen.
This will take time , everyone has their own way of grieving the lost of a loved one. I had to put my cat to sleep this past December and it was the most difficult decision I had to make but I knew she was suffering so I had to put my feelings aside and do what I thought was best for her, I still grieve for her at times but it is getting easier everyday. I still have her brother here. Even though they are gone the memories of the happiness %26 companionship they bring to us can never be replaced fully. Try to enjoy the other dog you have perhaps this may bring some comfort. Hope I could help. Stay strong.
i am going thru the same thing my 7 year old guinea pig pass way yesterday in my arms so i feel your pain. think about all the good times you had with her. what might help is talking to some you know like a friend or a some one that is close to you. maybe try writing a poem. or just take one day at a time and relax and enjoy the other pets you still have. other pets always know whats happened. my dog Sammy was crying when i was taking my guinea pig out of her cage because he senses that she is dead. and my piggy knew it was her time to go. she was a at that age were it's time to go to heaven and be free with other pets that have pass on.
I am very sorry that your dog is gone. I also had a dog that lived a long time, had problems, and had to be put to sleep. I was sad to lose my friend and I thought that it was unfair that I loved him so much, but that he died before I wanted him to. I thought that it would be a long time before I got another dog.

Only two weeks later, I saw a rescued puppy that needed a home. We adopted him. He did not replace the other dog, but I loved him very much. And all of the things that I learned from the first dog, helped me to raise and teach my new dog. That was six years ago, and I love my new dog very much. Also, I notice that older dogs seem to get a spurt of energy when you adopt a new puppy, and introduce it into the household.
I feel your pain, believe me, I had my sweet puppynose for 14 years, for the 4 months before we had to send him to the rainbow bridge, he wasn't eating, wasn't walking very well, just tired and listless when I took him in to the vet, I was told that it was inoperable cancer that was crushing his heart and other organs, He would have had only a week or 2 to live anyhow and would have died from starvation and dehydration, that is a horrific way to die besides the pain he was in. I begged the doctor to save him, no matter how much the surgery cost. but he told me that surgery wouldnt' save him, to put him under the anasthetic would kill him as surely as the sun would rise. I had to decide how much did I love him, and how selfish as I. I made the same decision you did sweetie. The only comfort I can give you is that you did the best thing for her that you possibly could. You kept your promise, the one you made years ago to take care of her, love her and put her best interest and comfort above your own needs, feelings and reasons. No one ever said goodbye was easy, and you will miss her every day, I lost him almost a year ago, and I still have his dog tags on my key chain. I still get out of bed and try to be careful not to step on his tail, I still cry. Mourn your loss, you lost your friend and don't let anyone diminish that grief by telling you its just a dog. Dogs are people too and if it matters to you, then it matters alot.
I think that only time will help you heal. Pets are part of our family and knowing that when you get home he's not going to be there is very hard but it will pass. Just remember the many times you enjoyed each other's company and never forget her.good luck.
All you can do is cry.
I know because I've gone through that. I bought another dog but nothing will replace the other one.
Since then I learned last year that my dog has bone cancer. I don't know how long he has to live.
I dread the day I have to put him to sleep.
Sorry about your dog.
Go to the Humane Society and adopt a puppy. My dog Lady [ a Shibs Inu ] was 4 when she died. My Husband bought me a Eskimo Spitz puppy. At first I didn't think that I could love that puppy. I had to learn to love him [for the pain was deep] ,and now he is 6. And Goldie , she died last year[ she was old %26 had problems too} and the next day I went to the Humane Society and got a little dog a Shih-Tzu. When I adopted him I didn't know what breed of dog he was. I was trying to get one the color of Goldie. Yes I love the little fellow. Dogs can't be replaced but another one will ease the pain. The pain will go away. She was a part of your life, so you will always have her in your heart %26 memories. Maybe another dog needs the love that you gave to her.

I just got my puppy dewormed yesterday, this mouning she pooped out a worm. Is it enough?

I took my dog for dewoming yesterday her first set of puppy shot . it included the deworming (strongid-t). She pooped out a worm at 5 am. Is it just the medicine working or should i go to the vet. It's to early in the mouning to call the vet their not open. Is there anything eles i can do for my dog. In three weeks i have to take her for her other set of vacinations. She is 9 weeks. An italian greyhound chiwhuahua.

It is normal for the pups to poop worms after being dewormed. If it was dead thats very good. some types of worms you wont be able to see in the poop, but others you can.
It will take a while for her to get rid of them so I wouldn't worry. I would continue with the meds so this gets cleared up.
That's normal, you may even see more worms, or worm segments, in her stools. It may also make her a bit lethargic and less hungry for the next day or so, but if she's still acting funny after that, then you should check with the vet.
thats pretty normal.
The wormer is doing it's job.
She should be pooping out worms.
Other than good socialization in a safe environment, gentle training and lots of love, just enjoy your puppy.
Remember, your puppy is too young to be in high dog traffic areas (i.e. the dog park, pet stores, etc.), however, you can carry her in these places. Petco, Petsmart, et al are good places to socialize a puppy. Just don't put her on the floor or in the grass/dirt outside. Even though she has had a shot, she is still at risk for parvo and other illnesses. You can however start enrolling her in a puppy kindergarten class. Just make sure it is at a private facility that takes good precautions and is clean.
Good luck
Yes, that's normal. It'll get dewormed along with each set of shots it'll receive. After the series of shots is completed, you'll need to start it on heartworm prevention, to keep it free of heartworm and intestinal worms throughout its life.

I just got my dog neutered yesterday and he doesn't stop crying and whining?

He has his morphine patch on and that is suppose to ease his pain, but I think its not helping and the other pain medicine they gave him is for tomorrow and I don't want him to be in pain ..is this normal? He also seems very distant and scared when I want to approach him. Please Help.
Answers:
If He is looking distant and a bit strange the I bet the patch is working and he is just a bit disoriented from the morphine. He may be whinning because he is just a bit disoriented with the meds. Morphine is a very powerful pain killer and can cause some side effects. Hes whinning and crying may be just that.
If you feel this is not the case then please call your vet and explain whats going on with your dog. He should not be in such pain.
thats ur problem not mine (poor dog)
I suggest you take him back to the vet and see if they can give him anything else to ease the pain :( poor puppy
Call your vet and see what they say.
Hardly surprising really. I don麓t think I would be best pleased if I was the dog..
are you babying him at all. treat him as normal as you can.. except to not let him run or jump up or down on anything.
Call your vet and see if you can give him some extra pain meds. Also ask if you can give your dog aspirin. Some dogs can take it; some can't.
can you blame him?
how would you feel if you got spayed or neutered? he is probably scared of you for doing something that hurts him so much
shame in you!
and there's nothing you can do except is wait it out until he forgives you
how would you feel if your penis was wacked off im sure you would cry and whine too!!! be nice to him i love dogs
call the vet ASAP there could be something wrong
Take him back to the vet pronto if he is that much in pain . They should have kept him for a few days so he could be looked after by a professional .
Good luck to you and don't let him jump or run.

I just got an 8 week old westie, and he is perfect besides some probalems he's having with pooping.?

He poops about 6 times an hour, which is obviously quite excessive, and he seems to strain himself when he poops. He sometimes whimpers. He isn't constipated because each time he tries, he poops. The poop isn't very hard or very soft, it's right about in the middle. I don't understand what would be making this happen. He eats fine, doesn't throw up, and is active. He just has this pooping problem.

We feed him on a regular schedule. Once in the morning and once at night. We feed him purina beneful for puppies

Everyone seems to say this isn't a good food for him. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better food, or does anyone know what might be wrong with him??
Answers:
See your vet.
He could very well be loaded with worms. I might also ask the vet if they could suggest a good quality food for your puppy.
how about taking him to the vet? He can't be too healthy if he is pooping that much.
This is symptomatic for many illnesses. Parasites such as worms is possible. Your dog needs to be evaluated by a vet before this does any harm to your dog.

As a general rule, any dog food you can buy at the supermarket is not going to be the best food. Although Beneful will not cause your dog to be found with all four feet sticking into the air one morning, you can find much better food.

I just got an 8 week old west highland white terrier puppy. He is perfect, besides his pooping.?

That's not normal, you need to get him to the vet. And I would change his food to something better. Read the label, the first ingredient should be meat, not corn. Corn is only a filler, dogs can't digest it.

At 8 weeks he should be getting 3 or 4 meals a day.
Well it is ok! He still does not know the house that well.So leave it alone and pick up te poo
well for starters thats not a very good food. it could be that you need to switch to something better. try a food that is chicken and oatmeal or chicken and rice or lamb and rice. its very easy to upset a puppies tummy. also it could be worms. get him in for a check up if things dont clear up in a week or so.
Is that the food the breeder fed him? I agree, it's not a good food, but you should be SLOWLY (over a week or so) switching him to something other than what his breeder fed him. Any signs of worms? Youshould be taking him to the vet early next week anyways for a check up to ensure he's doing well and has no issues- ask the vet about it.

I just got a whippet from a shelter?

he is a great dog, sits by the door when he wants to go out, and he even took a bath without a problem. Its just he is scared of the crate, and i cant seem to get him to go in it, i dont want to force him because i dont want him to be scared of it, or think its punnishment. he sleeps on my bed at night but he needs to go in the crate while im at school! got any tips? I know he might still be in shock because he was in the shelter for about a month, and his owners took him there, so he might think im trying to abandon him too, i dont know!
Answers:
You can try feeding him in there. Slowly putting the food next to it and then eventually inside of it so he can get used to it and start associating it with a happy place where good things happen. Give him treats and bones and put them in there for him. Also congrats on the new dog. We had a whippet from the shelter for over 14 years...best dog I ever had and I miss him every single day even now. Very loyal and eager to please type of dog. :-) You are so lucky! They LOVE to run! Mine was deathly afraid of the sound of fireworks.
At the shelter, he was probably contained in a run, or a ''crate'' type place.

Is there a way where you can just contain him in a room, while you are gone, instead of in the crate? Keep the crate open, and provide toys, a nice blanket, and some treats.
I hope you can run fast.
How cool, NICE RESCUE ! leave it open, dogs are "DEN" creatures, he'll eventually go in it, keep trying. Nice Dogs !
He maybe scared of the crate after being in something so similar at the shelter.

I suggest putting an old t-shirt or something like that you have worn for a while in the crate with a few toys. The T-shirt will hold your scent so as he will feel you are close. Place a few small treats in the back. Leave the door open so as he can go in and get the treats and leave when he wants to. Doing this for a couple of days and not leaving him in the crate too long at a time will soon get him used to it.

Congrats on your new friend.
It's most likely because he was caged at the shelter and that's just too reminiscent of the shelter for him.

What you can try is putting some extra yummy treats in there, and a couple of toys and coax him in. Leave the door open, and let him walk out as soon as he's done eating. That's ok at first, you want him to get the idea that this is his safe place, and that he can come out. Keep on repeating it, try and get him to stay in a little longer each time, but leave the door open and stay close to him.

It's going to take some time, and if this dog is really new to you, he's just starting to learn to trust you and getting used to his new home, so lots of patience is needed. All sighthounds are sensitive, meaning they don't do well with harsh treatment, so you need to be patient.

If he's reliably house trained, could you leave him loose in a room while you're working on crate training. Either that or do what I do, buy an exercise pen. They're 4 feet square so the dog doesn't feel so closed in - he might be more accepting of that. I put foster greyhounds in a pen rather than a crate, because they've been caged almost their entire lives before they're rescued and I won't put them in another one right away.
I suggest putting his food in there, and putting yummmmmy treats all around starting from the front, then move some to the back. Here is a very good video.

Oh, poor baby. Whippets are sweet dogs.
How about if you just try baby gating him into a safe room in the house instead of crating him when you have to be away?
He might feel more secure that way.

I just got a toy yorkshire terrier..?

he's two years old, and i just got him yesterday. his previous owners did not train him in any way, so he doesnt know any commands nor is he potty trained. i spent the weekend with him, and everything was okay, because he at least knows not to pee on me when i hold him, but at other times, i have to put him in a big box or else he would pee on any household thing he sees. we're planning on getting him into training classes, but it'll definitely be awhile before he gets potty trained. so now when i'm at school and my parents are at work, we don't have anywhere to put him except in the box. the box is big enough, but he barks and whines whenever he's inside. we can't even let him walk and run around the house. and he refuses to pee in bushes and on trees like normal dogs. what should i do with him espeically during the day when we're not around?

and p.s. he hasnt gone #2 for two days...i don't think that's too normal?

I have 2 yorkies and I know what you are going through. What you can do is get him a bellyband. It is a piece of cloth that you put a pad in the catches the urine. You could also get him a disposable doggie diaper. The bellyband is cheaper, because you only have to change the pad a few times a day. My male yorkie has his on everyday. It really saves carpet and floor. Just make sure if you get him either one of these to wash around his private area so he doesnt get a rash or get irritated skin. You can buy both products at petsmart. About the pooping part give him another day because he is getting used to his new surroundings, but I would def. take him to the vet if he doesn't poop tomorrow.
I had the same problem when I got mine... I have a 1 1/2 tea-cup yorkie. At first I had to take him out every hr to make sure he didn't do anything in the house. At this time I had a pom that was already potty trained. This might have made it easier but I would suggest that you take him out every hour to the place you want him to pee from now on. Either by doing puppy pads or in back yard. (ps I would not do puppy pads, if you have a backyard that would be better). After you feed him or he drinks water... take him out and say potty... after you play ex: for 15 mins etc... take him out. I would but a crate with some toys for him to stay in during the day or if the backyard is fenced in good enough you can leave him out side with a doghouse during the day. Once he gets his scent out in the yard he will start going their. There is a hormone scent you can buy to pour into the grass in yard so he can smell it and know to go there. Once you get him neutered, this will help as well. Once you get him on a routine, he will know when can hold it and wait to pee.
If he starts to smell around or dart... he needs to pee!!
There is a really great website with lots of yorkie information on it someone there will definatly be able to help you out! www.yorkietalk.com

I just got a six week old teacup chihuahua puppy but...?

he has fleas! How do i get rid of them before my other dogs get them? I tried a bath and that helped with a few but today there are even more! he is only 1.3 lbs. so i cant give him meds..help!
Answers:
I've had the same problem, purchasing a chihuahua, Bath the puppy in a gentle soap, use a flea comb while the pup sits on a paper towel, the fleas will land on the paper towel, flush the paper towel. Then apply a flea power that your vet should have that is safe for puppys. I'll never understand how puppys get fleas that young. The conditions at the breeders must be filthy. I breed Chi's myself and have never had a single flea on a puppy from my litters. Oh and by the way get a wormer from your vet fleas carry tapeworm.
contact your local vet. I am sure they can give you some advice on this. This pup is probably too young for preventative measures (advantix, etc.) but it's better to check with your vet.
Call the vet, that many fleas on a pup can kill it, the vet will give you something that is strong enough to kill the fleas but not hurt the puppy.
You probably have another source of fleas (another pet, bedding, etc.) If you gave him a thorough bath, and carefully combed out all the remaining fleas, AND you have control of the sources, you should be able to get rid of his fleas without too much trouble. Try Tea Tree Oil shampoo, it won't irritate him, and it helps loosen the fleas. Its non-toxic to mammals, even tiny dogs.
you should try to put a flea collar on him
He's only six weeks old?! He shouldn't have even been taken from his mother that early. Sorry, there's no such breed as a "teacup chihuahua," and you really shouldn't have bought a puppy no younger than 8 weeks, but, I digress.

Take him to a vet, they'll be able to tell you exactly what to do to stop the fleas. Try some flea shampoo specially made for puppies, flea shampoo is toxic (it does kill the fleas, after all), so don't douse him in it.

When we were fostering a litter of kittens who were flea infested we gave them a bath twice a day, and kept their living area very very clean. Don't let him near fabrics or clothes you can't wash often, keep him in a confined space to minimize exposure.

I still think it was irresponsible to get a puppy who's only six weeks old.
I am sorry your puppy has fleas. I cannot imagine any breeder in their right mind selling you a puppy at 6 weeks, especially a teacup size. Eight weeks is the bare minimum to sell a puppy and a small one, 12 weeks. The dog having fleas is another bad sign that this breeder is a very bad breeder. That being said, about the only thing you can do is ask your vet what can be done for a puppy so small and so young. I hope you can get this under control and that your puppy has a great life with you.
My best advice to you would be to keep him from other animals as much as possible, and bathe all the dogs every week. Also, you may want to sweep the carpets, shampoo the carpets, and wash bedding and clothing to stop the sprading of the fleas. Whatever you do DO NOT use a flea collar on the little one. We used flea collars and it made my two Chihuahuas bald around the neck, and we were told that Chihuahuas are too small for flea collars. If the bathing does not work, I'd ask your vet. I hope this helps! Good Luck!
First -- there is no such thing as a teacup Chihuahua and at 1.3 pounds he's really not so tiny compared to some of the qualtiy Chihuahuas out there that are 3pounds full grown., second -- he should still be with momma at 6 weeks --you are risking many health problems by having him that young.

They do make flea meds for kittens which might work, but if I were you I would take him to the vet and get their advice. Good luck
Fleas can be a pain. Did you bathe your dog again after you saw signs of more fleas?

With a puppy that age, if bathing doesn't work, I would suggest going to your vet. They have mutiple solutions of flea removal. I know people are quick to say "go to the vet" but it is really the best way to get straight forward help. The sooner you rid your pup of his fleas the better it is for you, him, and your other dogs.
bath him in dawn dish liquid..then poweder him with flea powder...
Hello..dang people sure panic about fleas, you can't get rid of them all ...ever...but you can comb, %26 sprinkle borax ( 20 mule team borax in laundry sections ) on rugs %26 under beddings, before going to bed.. then vacuum, in the morning...flea collars are a waste of money, they only work if the flea travels under them %26 this dog is too small..but you can use the little liquid tubes for puppies on her, JUST ONLY put it at the top center of her neck %26 base of her tail - where the body meets the tail ONLY, these are 2 spots fleas love best cuz most dogs can't get to these spots %26 your puppy can't ingest it that way either ...and you can also rub her with some olive oil..helps smother the fleas %26 not bad for her to ingest, this little dog a tablespoon would cover ..LOL !! Take Care :) Bet the vets luv these flea haters ..nothing gets rid of them all %26 treat ALL your dogs, not just the pup !! Do not panic, has nothing to do with cleanliness %26 don't bathe too much..bad for the skin .. also check her poo for little white worms, also common in nursed pups ( again not about cleanliness...) that you might need a vet for due to her size, or read the worming labels for her dosage, if it says TOY %26 puppy dosage, use half that...but am guessing you'll have some vet appts for shots %26 you can also do things then...tho with one this little, even a vet must be careful %26 good, especially about vaccinations !!
You need to take him to a vet .. A vet knows more about getting rid of fleas for that size of a dog.. In the long run its much cheaper to pay a vet bill than have the whole house and your other dogs infested with fleas..You would have to wash everything and then have your other dogs deflead also..Think about what I said and you know I will be right..Do it as soon as possible for everyones sake... Good luck. and make sure you ask your vet how you can prevent other out breaks... Either that or ask who ever you got the puppy from to pay for the vet bill.its only the right thing to do and everyone will be a happy camper, most of all your dogs and your self.
I would contact your vet or take him to the local grooming salon so they can dip him in flea and tick treatment!
If it is possible you need to separate him from your other animals in a room with out carpet . . . such as a bathroom. Get a flea collar.

You can try having him washed %26 "dipped" professionaly but I dont know about him being so young. They also make a liquid (such as frontline) that you put on the neck that is suppossed to work realy well.

If he is already in your house I would also consider treating your carpet and any furniture that is fabrick (including drapes and bed covers.) You can also spray around the outside of your home.

I know it sound extreme but fleas spread quickly especially with multiple animals in the home.

You should also watch for worms. Animals can contract them from eating fleas and other things (such as insects, lizards ect. . .) Good-Luck!!
