ok i have like a 3-4 month old border collie (hes still in the puppy stage) and he, like all puppies keeps biting me and everyone he sees' now of course we smack him and tell me "NO!" but this hardly works so does anyone have any suggestions or ideas....maybe that u have done with ur pet? plz help me if u can

one of the puppy books that i have suggests that when the puppy starts nipping you to completely ignore it. To simply stop touching it all together. Then when it sits at your feet to praise it.
It sound like he is old enough to start puppy school.you might consider finding some puppy classes to enroll him in!
I always smacked my dogs on the nose...its a sensative spot. Also, try smacking him w/ a newspaper which might scare the dog into stopping. You could also get a small hand full of chains. Everytime the dog bites throw it on the ground which the noise will scare the dog and relate biting to a bad experience. If all else fails do the old trick...bite the dog on the ear for dominance...I am just kidding!
I think your pup is just trying to play or maybe teething. Give him a chew toy to bite on instead of your hand! If the pup already has something in his mouth, he can't bite you or your guests.
Border Collies are herders and it's their instinct to nip at your heels. U shouldn't smack him! They are very sensitive dogs and you can make them into cringy dogs real easy if you keep doing that! Next time he nips you, grab the scruff of his neck firmly and give it a little shake, then sort of push him down like a down stay, and say NO. That's what his mother would have done. Well, except for the NO part, she would have growled at him though. She would not smack him and he doesn't understand being smacked.
my dog kept chewing up our shoes and i know this plan is stupid. but giving her a toy shoe was stupid enough to work. She has never chewed a shoe since the day we got her that shoe toy. My other dog chewed everything. I'd say that the best solutions are spraying "bitter apple spray" on his "victims." that works very well. it even helped me stop biting my nails. Another solution is those bones with cheese or peanut butter inside or "bully sticks", as well as a kong. These keep dogs content for hours. Last, your dog is probibly chewing alot because his teeth hurt. Puppies teeth hurt alot too, because they are just babies and their teeth are undeveloped and their teeth ache. I hope this helped!
When our lab was little he would bite. We had bite marks all over our hands and arms. Our vet showed us a trick to get him to stop. Take your hand and wrap it around his muzzle and then smack your hand really hard so that it makes a loud noise. We did this to our lab only twice and he stopped biting.
Please do not smack or hit your puppy. They don't understand what this is and may just think you want to play fight with them (which is also not recommended). Also, do not push them down on the floor to become dominant. This just stresses them out and does not teach them anything. There are other, better ways to become the pack leader in the house without physical abuse.
The best way to approach a puppy biting is to ignore it. When they bite, leave the room for five seconds. Do not say anything to your puppy or touch it. Then return and continue to play (with a chew toy). Every time your puppy bites you (or anyone else) you remove your attention. I'm walking down the street when I see you walking towards me. I walk up to you and smack you on the nose. What can you do in return? Think about it. There are only 2 possible responses. You can become frightened and run away, or you can become aggressive and hit back. These same 2 responses are also the only 2 ways in which your dog can respond if you smack him. Don't smack him. he's a puppy and biting is what puppies do. BUT, don't let him get away with it either. When 1 puppy bites another too hard, that puppy will let out a yelp. This tells the biter that he has bitten too hard so that next time he will not bite as hard. So when your pup bites you, do the same, yelp! Sounds like crap, but it often works.
If excitement is a problem (excited pup starts to bite so becomes more excited so bites more so...etc), then the pup needs times out. Lock him away with no stimulation for a few minutes, then go and open the door to let him out, but as you do so, turn your back and walk away. Do nothing to stimulate excitement or you will start the process off again.
Bottom line is this; training a dog not to do something actually begins with training it to do the simple things like sit/stay/come etc. Once he is doing these things well and learns that obey produces reward, he becomes more willing and able to stop doing a wrong thing like biting when told to do so. Get along to puppy pre school (do you have that in the US? surely you do!)
AND DO NOT YELL AT OR THROW CHAINS AT YOUR DOG, I am sick to death of seeing psyched out dogs because of this sort of wrong training.
Well, of you are smacking him, then "of course" that's not working. You can keep on striking your dog and end up with a very expensive behavior case, or worse, he'll have to be killed because he was taught how to be aggressive - from you.

I need some help here, please!?
I am babysitting a 6 week old puppy. we just got him last night. I need some help here on what to do? i haven't really had a dog before, and i am only 12 years old, what do i need to do to make sure that he stays well and gets what he needs? thanks in advance,

First make sure he has fresh water at all times and food a couple of times everyday. A good puppy food is best. Lots of love, gentle petting. If the weather is nice let him run after you in the yard for exercises. Make sure you keep him in a secured back yard. They can wander out of curiosity. Also give him quiet time as puppies just like babies need their rest. To save yourself messes take him out often (when he wakes up, 20 minutes after he eats and drinks. If he hasn't had his puppy shots yet( sounds too young for that) keep him in your house and back yard. Good luck. I am sure you will do a good job.

When my dogs were puppies they were on a 3 hour rest/play schedule. They'd wake up with us, eat, go outside and play for 3 hours, go to sleep in their crates for 3 hours, wake up, eat, go outside and play for 3 hours and so on... until bed time for us and then they'd stay in their crates all night. Most importantly, have fun with him!
Be very gentle with him it sounds like he just got wiened from his mom so he is scaried, think about it you would be too. Having a puppy is not really that hard to take care of all you have to do is show it affection and feed,water him/her. HELP! my dog is a golden retriever and she is soooooo lazy..she is a bit on the fat side too...she is only three months old and she doesn't like going on walks , or going out of our home.( i live in a HUGE APARTMENT) it's really big so it gives her enough space but she just doesn't like going on a walk to get some excercise or do her business. I already tried bribing her with some dog treats and pieces of apple, and her chew toy, but she was only interested the first time.please help me! i can't go cleaning her pee in the house 8 times a day! but i would like to put some effort into making her look forward to a walk.

Also, you shouldn't need a leash, unless your apartment is in a high rise with hall ways etc. She should be following you just about everywhere you go. Don't bribe, reward for behavior you want. When she gets up to follow you...say good walk..and treat...and have a play party. Do you know how to play with her? golden's usually love a little tumble..
Make sure you are using a crate with her...if she has the full run of your HUGE APARTMENT then why would she want to go outside, when everything she needs is inside and interesting enough for her. If you have her stay in a crate and let her out every 2 or 3 hours %26 you carry her outside immediately..then tell her good pee, and reward when she goes 1 %26 2 outside..she'll get it. Be sure to play with her outside, so she finds it to be a friendly fun place, just like inside.

Call a vet, and get an appointment. Get her checked out...It might be something simple.
If thats not the case. take her outside, even if you have to drag her, and tie her up on a chain. Sit near by and let her explore for herself.
are you sure she's not lazy but just afraid? do you know if she got hurt or scared on a previous time she was taken outside? you might have to pick her up and take her outside. you might try taking her to a lake or river and let her play in the water. gr's are water dogs so she should like it. also, instead of just taking her out to go potty try getting a tennis ball and playing out in the grassy area or take her to the park for a little bit to show her the outdoors aren't a bad place but a fun place. good luck!

Birds are especially bad for folks with asthma. Cat urine and feces, I BELIEVE, are the worst to be in contact with. All in all though, being exposed on a long term to animal fecal matter can expose you to any number of diseases and harmful bacteria.
uh dude I practically grew up in my barn same as my daddy did when he was younger and we never got sick---I think it depends...we slept in the loft with some of the smaller animals like bunnies and birds but we always showered well afterwards and we just have good immune systems...so really if you're prone to getting sick then yea it can be bad for you...but if you're healthy and you've always been healthy then chances are as long as you try to stay clean you'll be fine

Seriously they will eat diapers and other sanitary products, like pink "mice". You really have to take it out to the trash can or secure the waste baskets. I have Bloodhounds that are major dumpster divers.
You should put bitter apple or a very spicy barbaqu sauce on it before you leave.
He probably likes the way they smell. The only thing to stop that is to throw away the diapers before you go out.
Try tabasco sauce. It won't hurt him but it will make him think twice before eating another diaper. If you're opposed to this idea, get a sturdier trashcan with a lid.

While your son is wearing them? Dogs like things that have a strong smell. Pick up the diapers and dispose of them into a container that is dog proof. Some dog behavior problems are easily solve by avoidance.

My dog is a HUGE dumpster diver, too! I have a cannister trash can in the kitchen with a very heavy lid, and we HAVE to step on the pedal to raise it, it's difficult for us to even open it with our hands...so that keeps him out of the kitchen.
I no longer keep trash cans in the bedrooms, Zuke loves to chew on used tissues...gross, I know, but I can't seem to break him of that. The bathroom...that's a big problem because Zuke loves to lay in the bathtub, but he also loves to chew up the roll of toilet paper. So, I keep the trash can under the sink, and the roll of toilet paper up high on a shelf...it's a pain, but I'm willing to accommodate him since we've tried everything to get him to stop.
My dog also likes to lick dirty clothing, and not just socks and underwear...some dogs just like such things :) I'd just make sure to keep it all out of his reach :)
I need some advice, and please don't say take her to vet, I will if it gets any worse. Please take a look.
I have a rat terrier who is displaying some strange behavior. This started two days ago out of nowhere.She wont jump on the bed and she shakes a bit. She hasnt eaten anything that my older rat terrier hasnt had and she is only 2 yrs old. I have been the only one handling her and she is physically fine from the exterior. She goes outside and kinda crys a bit and backs up, like walking backward. She will then sit down or lie down on the ground. She seems ok sometimes and she occasionally plays with her toys. She is ok one minute and seems uneasy the next. She sleeps in the bed with me and seemed to have slept fine last night. She was acting odd again about 10 min after gettting up this morning. She is now lying on the bed with my other dog and is fine. Just lying there content. No shaking, no issues. She has been eating a little bit and is still using the bathroom with no diarreah. I would like an answer to this if anyone has an idea. I am traveling out of town and dont have a vet here.

For instance: a dog who walks with his head leaning to the side and whimpering, could have an ear infection..or could have some sort of sore area on their head, neck or ears..the only way to tell is to examine the dog..which we can't do on the Internet.
I suggest you take the dog any vet you can find for an evalutaion. I know this is not the advice you want...but its the only sensible one.
it could be stress of some sort and i know you said there isnt a vet anywhere close but i would really recommend going to the vet cuz it could be something inside that is damaged.
You can't write something like this and expect people not to recommend that you see the vet. It is already bad enough to see the vet, you can't wait until it gets worse.
If you care at all about the dog, give her the care you promised when you adopted her and take her to the vet.

She may be jealous of your other dog. If you adopted her, she may be scared of what the previous owner did to her. Try switching to another food type if she doesn't eat. You should play with her more indoors. This has never happened to me so I'm not sure, but what I am sure of is that this is probably temporary.
I know you said don't say take her to a vet BUT take her to a vet if you care about her. If your child were having those symptoms you would take her to a doctor.

Several things come to mind that will need a vet to check. First would be something like a slipped disc in her back. Terriers are usually quite active, and although she's young, she could have injured her back, pinching a nerve. X-ray would be needed to view the back and steroids/anti-inflammatories to take out the swelling. The second thing is perhaps a bladder/kidney infection. Usually you see frequent attempts to urinate with that though. No matter what town you're in, there's usually a vet somewhere. Pull out the yellow pages and take it to the vet. You are obligated to provide your pet with veterinary care, if not by law, then out of proper moral obligation.
From the description you are providing this dog is displaying very common and classic signs of pain. Some how the dog has hurt itself, could be anything, back problem with the spine and cord. Maybe something internal such as a blocked intestine in which case the dog needs emergency medical attention. This dog is in pain.
If she's shaking the problem could be neurological and will only get worst if left untreated but we are not veterinarians so we can't help you or give you advice. The only one who can is your vet so the best thing to do is take her.

it sounds like she may be in pain, she could have a knee joint popping in and out of place, fine one minute, whining the next, watch her when shes going up and down even one step, jumping up on beds, ect..., she also could have a splinter or thorn in one of her pads, check those closely
Signs point to many things, but at the top of the list are impacted anal glands or a back injury. Both of these need the attention of a vet. Sorry.

You say you are traveling. Some dogs do not travel as well as others. Is this the first time you have taken your friends with you? How are you traveling? Did you fly? There are so many variables that you do not mention. With a dog as active and intelligent (and young) as your Rat Terrier it could be stress or boredom. The trembling and whining does not occur when she is feeling secure( in bed with you or with the other dog.) Try to be reassuring when the trembling starts. Sit and hold him/her and see if that helps. I do not know how long you will be away from you vet. but if this continues I would get there ASAP.

Does she show any signs of this behavior (especially the backing away and sitting down) while just on the carpet and not outside? This is a normal puppy behavior the first time they have a collar on. If something is bothering their eyes or vision they will do that. It can be something as simple as an eyelash in the eye. But, for one reason or another she is trying to back away (escape) from a discomfort, normally something around or close to their face. For instence if you put any animals face in a paper sack they will display that behavior every time.

For instance: a dog who walks with his head leaning to the side and whimpering, could have an ear infection..or could have some sort of sore area on their head, neck or ears..the only way to tell is to examine the dog..which we can't do on the Internet.
I suggest you take the dog any vet you can find for an evalutaion. I know this is not the advice you want...but its the only sensible one.
it could be stress of some sort and i know you said there isnt a vet anywhere close but i would really recommend going to the vet cuz it could be something inside that is damaged.
You can't write something like this and expect people not to recommend that you see the vet. It is already bad enough to see the vet, you can't wait until it gets worse.
If you care at all about the dog, give her the care you promised when you adopted her and take her to the vet.

She may be jealous of your other dog. If you adopted her, she may be scared of what the previous owner did to her. Try switching to another food type if she doesn't eat. You should play with her more indoors. This has never happened to me so I'm not sure, but what I am sure of is that this is probably temporary.
I know you said don't say take her to a vet BUT take her to a vet if you care about her. If your child were having those symptoms you would take her to a doctor.
What good advice could people on here possibly give you besides taking her to a vet. She's exhibiting strange, out of the ordinary behavior.

It sounds she is painful somewhere. She might possibly have something wrong with her back or something else internally where the pain come %26 goes.
This probably won't clear up on its own and should be checked out.

The shaking isn't good.. my cat was doing that for a while and ended up having diabetes
so i really think you need to get that looked at.
Several things come to mind that will need a vet to check. First would be something like a slipped disc in her back. Terriers are usually quite active, and although she's young, she could have injured her back, pinching a nerve. X-ray would be needed to view the back and steroids/anti-inflammatories to take out the swelling. The second thing is perhaps a bladder/kidney infection. Usually you see frequent attempts to urinate with that though. No matter what town you're in, there's usually a vet somewhere. Pull out the yellow pages and take it to the vet. You are obligated to provide your pet with veterinary care, if not by law, then out of proper moral obligation.
From the description you are providing this dog is displaying very common and classic signs of pain. Some how the dog has hurt itself, could be anything, back problem with the spine and cord. Maybe something internal such as a blocked intestine in which case the dog needs emergency medical attention. This dog is in pain.
If she's shaking the problem could be neurological and will only get worst if left untreated but we are not veterinarians so we can't help you or give you advice. The only one who can is your vet so the best thing to do is take her.
I had a dog that was a diabetic that acted like that.

it sounds like she may be in pain, she could have a knee joint popping in and out of place, fine one minute, whining the next, watch her when shes going up and down even one step, jumping up on beds, ect..., she also could have a splinter or thorn in one of her pads, check those closely
Signs point to many things, but at the top of the list are impacted anal glands or a back injury. Both of these need the attention of a vet. Sorry.

She might be just scared or upset. it may even be stress, sorry i'm saying the vet thing, but ask your vet if their are any medicines for stress.

You say you are traveling. Some dogs do not travel as well as others. Is this the first time you have taken your friends with you? How are you traveling? Did you fly? There are so many variables that you do not mention. With a dog as active and intelligent (and young) as your Rat Terrier it could be stress or boredom. The trembling and whining does not occur when she is feeling secure( in bed with you or with the other dog.) Try to be reassuring when the trembling starts. Sit and hold him/her and see if that helps. I do not know how long you will be away from you vet. but if this continues I would get there ASAP.

Does she show any signs of this behavior (especially the backing away and sitting down) while just on the carpet and not outside? This is a normal puppy behavior the first time they have a collar on. If something is bothering their eyes or vision they will do that. It can be something as simple as an eyelash in the eye. But, for one reason or another she is trying to back away (escape) from a discomfort, normally something around or close to their face. For instence if you put any animals face in a paper sack they will display that behavior every time.

Okay, I'm glad you want the best for your new family member. That's what they are, family members. I've been in the owning, showing, breeding, raising of dogs for now over 16 years. My grandfather had his own vet clinic when I was a kid. My brother works with about a hundred dogs a day. I can help you.
Chihuahuas have long lives as it is. They are the longest living dog. Anything with chihuahua in it will live to be at least 14 years old. So right there you're set.
I would start with food. Look at the ingredients on the package. If there is corn anywhere in the ingredients... don't get it. Corn is not healthy (Science Diet will say otherwise... but they are only trying to sell the food) for human or animal (unless you are a cow that needs to be fattened up). Ask your local pet store for a premium brand dog food. They use the best meat. Humans eat a Grade A meat, Premium dog foods use a Grade B meat, Grocery brand foods (Dog Chow, Kibbles'n'Bits,etc.) use a Grade C meat or by-products (aka leftovers). I would stay away from beef. Beef has too much hormones in it that dogs are becoming allergic to beef. Stick with chicken, lamb, fish, turkey, etc. If you pup has sensitive skin or a skin pigment (look under the fur... the skin will be off colored in parts), I would stick with lamb. With a good food you won't have to worry about vitamins. She is small, they really have a lot of bone density issues. Make sure she doesn't jump off anything until she is at least a year old. Then only off sofa levels. Nothing higher. Keep her up to date on her vet checks. The vet will be giving you some heartguard. That will help to prevent from some problems. It also depends on her genetics. She should have a soft coat until she turns somewhere between a year and two. Then her adult fur will come in and it will be a little more on the course side. It's still soft I think. Keeping it shiny is also based on the food. Also on the grooming. Do not bathe her everyday. A couple times a month is good. More than that only if absolutely needed. Otherwise there will be skin flaking issues. There are conditioners for dogs... scented as well. Choose the one your groomer and you like best. Don't put anything on her paws and tummy unless advised by your vet. You don't want her paws to crack and get sore... but you don't want them to be so soft that she can't walk on sidewalks either. She can take the tough sidewalks and rocky grounds. Talk with your vet on what you can do to keep them from cracking. It's hell to get them healed. I also suggest you get her into some puppy classes. As a puppy these classes are for socialization and education (your education). Then you can move into obedience classes when she is 6 months. These can help so much so that you won't be considered a bad dog owner. A dog that stops barking when told "no bark" is good. A dog that can walk on a leash without pulling to get after another dog is seen as a well behave and well trained dog. Keep the dog socialized. Make sure as a puppy she is being allowed to be touched by many people of different ages and races (there are people out there who train their dogs to attack other races... so sad). Play with her feet and toes... this will help when clipping toenails... one of the toughest things to do with small dogs. Check her teeth by lifting up her lips and opening her mouth. Praise her when she does good at this. This will be helpful when seeing the vet. The vet will be able to do an examination without being bit. Do all this while playing with her so she knows that this is a fun thing, not a bad thing. Have a lot of natural bones for her to chew on. Rawhide is not good for dogs. They eat it and swallow it and then it get lodged in their system and plugs them up. I know, I've had to remove rawhide from a dog's rectum because she got plugged up. Natural bones and toys are best for her.

If you are feeding a good quality dogfood you won't need to give vitamins and supplements. In fact if you are feeding a good quality dogfood and aren't having any issues w/ health, a supplement will only throw the balance off, causing you problems.
You don't want to make the pads on her feet soft, she needs the protection when she is walking outside.. Hot cement, stones etc. You shouldn't put moisturizers on them, plugs up the pores and you will have skin issues..
Feed her good food, lots of fresh clean water, lots of good exercise, don't treat her like a baby, allow her to be a dog, and train her, and she'll be fine.

Love her with all your heart and she will be fine.
I agree feed her a quality food!!! I feed mine Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice Small Crunchy Bites. Fur is shinier, skin is no longer dry, eyes look better, and they are just healthier all around!! And yes, get her spayed!!
What you feed the dog and exercise are the two most important things to do in order to prolong your dog's life.
Feed her a multi-vitamin , balanced or high protein dog food. Make sure she exercises everyday. Only buy her calcium supplements because not many dog foods offer calcium .
This will give her healthy bones.
