I need to hand feed a nb puppy.is it better to use a droper or dog baby bottle?

Go to the pet store and buy a baby bottle for small animals. The bottle will be able to meter out how much you're feeding, and can do it more efficiently (not to mention that it will satisfy the pup's natural urge to suckle).

It depends on the puppy. Some puppys just won't drink from a puppy bottle. If the puppy will take a bottle, that is the best. Not only is it quicker but it's more like the mom and allows him/her to strengthen there sucking reflex.
The dog baby bottle would be better because it simulates the mothers nipple.
Use a bottle, they need to suck. The droper will feed ok but they do need to suck. If you don't let it now it will grow up sucking on all kinds of things.

It depends on the size of the dog. If it's tiny like a Chihuahua or a Yorkie then actually tube feeding is best. It's difficult, but much more effective than a bottle or a dropper as it makes sure the milk gets to their tummy. The little tiny ones often have trouble sucking and can dribble more than they swallow. I have done this myself with Chi pups and kittens.
If it's a bigger dog then a bottle should be fine. The puppies can suck much easier than the little ones and it comes more natural to them.
Newborns need feeding every 2 hours day and night so I hope someone is around to help you out.
I'm not a vet or a breeder, but I have done many rescues over the years.
Good luck with the hand raising. It's hard, but so rewarding when they make it.
Try the bottle first. Sometimes it takes puppies a little while to understand it. If that doesn't work, then move to the dropper. When the puppy starts to understand go back to the bottle.

i had to feed a whole litter of puppies and then not too long ago i had another puppy to feed. the vet said that puppies have a natural instinct to suck, so a bottle would be best. they also said that i could use goat milk, instead of puppy milk (powdered stuff from the store) which i did use the goat milk and it worked wonders. and its alot cheaper. my puppies grew so fast. also what i had to do was to "trick" the puppy into thinin it was still with its mother. i took a box and layered the bottom layer with newspaper, then a towel, on top of the towel i put a heating pad-set to low, and on the top just another towel. i also "hid" a ticking watch inside of the box between the layers. that way the puppy would hear the tick and think it was his mother heartbeat and feel the warmth from the heating pad and not "freakout" cuz he thought "mommy" was taken from him. there alot of puppies that die from the trauma of not being with their mothers when they are that young, but these tips from my vet worked wonders.

Use a bottle and dont get discouraged..it will finally eat..I raised 5 puppies on baby bottles..Good luck to you..
If it is a large breed puppy, you can go straight to the pet nurser kit (sold at pet stores) which have a variety of nipples that you can try on the pup to see which they will take the best. You will need to use a heated safety pin to enlarge the holes in the nipples or you won't get flow.
If it is a small breed puppy you may need to use an eyedropper at first. It is not unusual when starting to feed a newborn that they will seem to only get a few drops in the first few feedings. This is when an eye dropper can help to make sure they get something to start.
After each feeding it is very important that you massage the area where they go potty and maybe at first only some spotting will be noticed rather than pee until the pup has had a chance to eat a few times. I do this with a dampened slightly warm cottonball. This is what the mother dog does with their tongue because the pups cannot go to the bathroom by themselves, at least not sufficiently.
I keep mine in a box with a heating pad under a few layers of towels, set on low. Pet Stores also sell heating discs that can be microwaved, covered and set under the towel.
Ask the pet store to show you BENEBAC and how to use it. It's something that comes in a tube and provides essential "good" bacteria to your puppy. This will greatly help the pup since it is a newborn.
Your best bet is to get a commercially prepared puppy formula such as "Esbillac" or "Just Born". The powdered product costs less. Be sure to mix it right if that is what you go with.
You can make your own formula but since you are raising one puppy, the cost will likely not be prohibitive.
please don't forget that after feeding you will need to stimulate the pup to urinate and defecate
Hello, hopefully the puppy takes to the bottle %26 you have consulted with a VET, it's not good to force feed unless YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING or it can kill, if she won't take a bottle then it's VET TIME ONLY..unless you REALLY know what you're doing ...%26 fair warning..bottle feeding is 24/7..sometimes every hour for weeks ... until the puppy takes in more food..just like mama dogs would do..till about 4 weeks, then sometimes you can start adding moist, solid foods, plus you must also gently wipe it's butt with a warm cloth to make the puppy potty..again just as the mom does with her tongue or they will get sick !! I also had to bottle feed a new born puppy it is hard work every few hours day and night but i found a babies bottle with a soft teat and also you can make it a bit bigger if needed a dropper would take to long and you would only be finished and you would be starting again
I need to find my perfect dog breed?
I am looking for a dog that is medium to large sized and doesn't shed. I do not care if it is hyper but it would be nice if it were easily trainable. I know that all dogs shed but some just not very much. If you could please help me out with this i would be very grateful. The youngest child in my family is 15 so that shouldn't be a problem. Well... One of the best dog ever is the golden retriever. You might not want that cause it has a long coat and it will shed. I suggest that you get a labrodor retriever. Its just like a golden retriever but it has a short coat. The only problem would be during shedding season(all dogs goes through). Other than that seasons it usually dun shed. And it is highly intelligent and easy to train. They are lovable too. Hope this will help. good luck!

i have told this to many people and i will tell it to u. no one can tell u what kind of dog u should get. the best thing to do is pick out some dogs that u like the looks of and research them. no one can tell u what u like. people will tell u what their favorite dog is. so i hate people that ask this question. u need to research the breed of dog u like. find out if it fits ur criteria. im not trying to put u down. i am just trying to tell u that u shouldnt let someone else pick for u. this is a big choice and u shouldnt make the wrong one. so just research and u will be fine. have the kids research as well. they will be taking care of the dog too. so good luck. dont listen to these people cuz u might end up making a wrong choice. maybe u should look at a shelter. everyday shelter dogs get put to sleep cuz no one wants them. try there u may just end up finding the perfect dog

My aunt says that poodles don't shed like most other dogs but you have to brush their hair like you do your own and they are easily trained. They have to go to the groomers to keep their hair under control - the puppy cut is the easiest to maintain - like people do for hair styles.
I've heard that Bichon Frise's are similar in this respect.
The Chinese Crested only has a tuft of hair on it's head so shedding is not much of a problem for that breed either - but you have to be careful it doesn't get sunburned.
You should take a look at Poodle rescue. They are very smart dogs who shed the least of all dog breeds. A medium to large sized Poodle would be the Standard Poodle. Take a look at http://www.petfinder.com and adopt one. Or, you could take a look at the Airedale Terrier. They're also very smart, low-shedding dogs that don't have the typical Terrier temperament.

They also have all dog breeds on the website so that way you can look through them. They are doing a lot of mixing with poodles now, and some of them are rather cute. The sheltie poodle cross is adorable. Depending on how much room you have, I wouldn't get any kind of herding or hunting breed unless u plan on putting them on a treadmill. (yes I'm serious) If a dog doesn't get out that energy, then it turns into bad habits. If u have the time to train, excercise, and give mental stimulation, then Australian Cattle Dogs, and Australian Shepperds are good and smart breeds. Labs etc shed a whole lot. hope this helped

I need to feed my dog prescription dog food, how will it affect his insurance premiums?
He is a middle aged dog, needing hills c/d for the rest of his life according to the vet.
I know there must be an alternative - we are capitalists afterall, i am even happy to prepare from scratch myself.
BUT - if there is no other option than to claim for prescription food through his insurance - how will the premiums be affected.
I already pay 拢16 monthly, with a 拢90 xs.

Not sure about the premiums but be aware that "hill's prescription range" including the C/D range are not in fact (despite the name) prescription foods! This is just the way it is marketed.
These foods can be bought from other places such as pet stores and pharmacies and are nearly always cheaper than the vets. I would put money on the fact that the vet did not mention this to you.

As some pet insurance schemes are based on cost of product rather than where you buy it from, getting the product slightly cheaper could help you. This is going to be a long term condition. The vet is the expert, but why pay more for a tin of food or bag of dry?

Hello..depends on why the vet say the dog needs this prescription food... and my friend who raises Dachsunds, who has an old lady dachshund with cancer for over 10 years uses only the RAW meat diet ..whole RAW ONLY..chicken or turkey parts..%26 a whole fish ( once a week or every other week ) bought from the grocery stores..just remember RAW, then the bones are not dangerous and dogs digest the RAW foods best..so cooked is not good no matter what %26 cooked bones are the danger, even deadly...and Just for Info too..some of the prescription foods have ended up on the recall list as well..so paying more is not always better..if you need info on the recalled pet foods, the sites are on my profile..Take Care :)

Insurance wise - your premiums should not be affected. The limts will be on whether your insurance policy pays out a maximum for life, for 12 months or per condition.
For that you will have to look at your policy wording.

I need to deworm my goat?
but my puppy eats the goats poop all the time. Do I need to worry about the medication affecting the puppy or will the goat affectively digest the meds? The medication is called Valbazen. On the label it says:WARNING :cattle: 27day slaughter withdrawl, not for use in first 45 days of pregnancy or within 45 days of removal of bulls. sheep: 7 day slaughter withdrawl, not for use in the first 30 days of pregnancy or within 30 days of removal of rams. Not for use in dairy animals. There are warnings to protect humans from injesting the stuff what about other animals and by-product? I asked a vet tech and she said dont worry... Ok all you vet techs out there...what do you think? I cant keep the two animals apart. You know how puppies are...she will outgrow the scat-eating and I could wait to administer meds I guess...

I'm not a vet tech...but I have an LGD (Livestock Guardian Dog) that lives with the goats and ingests their droppings. I worm my goats regularly and she has never been affected (she has been with the goats since she was 5 weeks old). Just make sure you worm your puppy regularly, too.
If your puppy is a livestock guardian breed she will NOT outgrow eating the droppings. It's normal for them to want to clean up any evidence of their herd so as not to attract predators. It also helps them bond with the herd. It seems gross to us but it's completely normal for them.

I think I would worry less about the pup ingesting de-wormer than whatever worms might pass. Not all of them will necessarily be dead, and then you'll have a pup with worms, too. Do the best you can, but you may need to worm the pup, too.

The best thing to do is to get her used to having her feet messed with. My best friend is a professional dog groomer and trainer, and she plays a game with all the dogs called "My Paw".
Hold the dog in your lap in such a way that it can't get away from you. Grab the dog's paw and hold onto it gently, but do not let the dog have its paw back until it is calmer, or until you are ready to give it back. Once you can hold the paw, start massaging the toes, and repeat the "My Paw" process. Once you can hold it, and massage the toes, bring the nail clippers out and pretend to clip the nails, again playing "My Paw"
Speak in a very soothing voice the whole time. Remember it is not what you say, but how you say it.
Eventually she will learn that you are not going to hurt her.

Just take her to the groomers or the vet they usually do it for cheap and its easier then trying to do it yourself.
Clipping a dog's nails is tricky.If the nails are dark, you can't see where the life ends in it and might hurt him/her.Suggest you let the vet do it.Other way is loads of running , it will wear the nails of naturally.
I've got the same thing with my dog.
Don't drug your dog, please. Get help, hold her down, don't coddle her. She's got to learn that she must submit to having her nails clipped, but that nothing bad will happen to her and there's no reason to be afraid.
Also, it's important that you're calm and not apprehensive about her reaction. Your dog takes all her cues from you.
Try using a Dremel instead of a clipper. Many dogs that don't care to have their nails cut are much calmer with the Dremel. Also, try to work on your dog's nails after you exercised your dog. She might be too tired to resist.

dogs paws are extremely sensitive. even a really well trained dog will still flinch on occassion while having nails cut.
a dogs nails are NOT like humans nails - they go much deeper into the bone/flesh of the toe.
also, be very careful when cutting her nails. its best to cut a very small amount, leave it for a week, then cut another small amount.
this is because a vein runs down the nail - do NOT cut this vein, its very painful, will bleed a lot and can get a nasty infection in the dogs paw/leg.

Well there is no quick fix to get your dogs to allow you to cut their nails. But I have found that if you play with the dogs paws it will desensitize them to you touching them and eventually allow you to cut their nails without any problem. The best thing to do is to get her used to having her feet messed with. My best friend is a professional dog groomer and trainer, and she plays a game with all the dogs called "My Paw".
Hold the dog in your lap in such a way that it can't get away from you. Grab the dog's paw and hold onto it gently, but do not let the dog have its paw back until it is calmer, or until you are ready to give it back. Once you can hold the paw, start massaging the toes, and repeat the "My Paw" process. Once you can hold it, and massage the toes, bring the nail clippers out and pretend to clip the nails, again playing "My Paw"
Speak in a very soothing voice the whole time. Remember it is not what you say, but how you say it.
Eventually she will learn that you are not going to hurt her.

Clipping a dog's nails is tricky.If the nails are dark, you can't see where the life ends in it and might hurt him/her.Suggest you let the vet do it.Other way is loads of running , it will wear the nails of naturally.

Don't drug your dog, please. Get help, hold her down, don't coddle her. She's got to learn that she must submit to having her nails clipped, but that nothing bad will happen to her and there's no reason to be afraid.
Also, it's important that you're calm and not apprehensive about her reaction. Your dog takes all her cues from you.
Try using a Dremel instead of a clipper. Many dogs that don't care to have their nails cut are much calmer with the Dremel. Also, try to work on your dog's nails after you exercised your dog. She might be too tired to resist.

Okay, my dad went to walmart to get me poster board, and i guess he noticed that we needed dog food. He came back an hour later with a huge kibbles and bits bag. I told him about 15 times, today ALONE to NOT buy dog food at walmart. And you know why they picked up that particular food? Because of the fancy words and the pretty packaging. I was so angry, that I actually grabbed my dad over to the dog food and read out loud the ingredients. And told him about the BHA causing cancer. You know what I got? a HEY! PUT THAT BACK IN THE CLOSET!! And of course my stepmother had to put in a comment. She said, oh did we get the wrong cracked corn for the chickens, too!? It is not my fault I protect my dogs! I told him, bring me to the feed store, to get royal canin! I don't want to sound like a brat but hey I don't want my dog dying because of my ignorant father! How can I convince him to take the food back? I know that we can afford better food because he makes 2,000 a week. ingreds. in AD

This is the time when you need to act older than you are %26 try to understand that they just fell prey to the advertisers. Their job is to draw people in by their packaging %26 sell the product %26 they are very good at it. Your parents did not get the dog food just to irritate you, they did what they thought was right %26 you can't fault them for that. Your best bet is to tell them thanks for trying but you would prefer to get a certain brand because it's better for your dogs. Then offer to pay for it if they will pick it up for you or go get it yourself. Donate the food you're not using to either someone in the neighborhood that needs some help or to an animal shelter that can always use it. It's not the worst food or they couldn't sell it. It's just not the best %26 not what you want.

This is the time when you need to act older than you are %26 try to understand that they just fell prey to the advertisers. Their job is to draw people in by their packaging %26 sell the product %26 they are very good at it. Your parents did not get the dog food just to irritate you, they did what they thought was right %26 you can't fault them for that. Your best bet is to tell them thanks for trying but you would prefer to get a certain brand because it's better for your dogs. Then offer to pay for it if they will pick it up for you or go get it yourself. Donate the food you're not using to either someone in the neighborhood that needs some help or to an animal shelter that can always use it. It's not the worst food or they couldn't sell it. It's just not the best %26 not what you want.

If they are both intact, and you do not want puppies, have your ***** spayed very soon. If you do want puppies, if the breeding takes then you will have puppies in 58 to 70 days.

one of the puppy books that i have suggests that when the puppy starts nipping you to completely ignore it. To simply stop touching it all together. Then when it sits at your feet to praise it.
It sound like he is old enough to start puppy school.you might consider finding some puppy classes to enroll him in!
I always smacked my dogs on the nose...its a sensative spot. Also, try smacking him w/ a newspaper which might scare the dog into stopping. You could also get a small hand full of chains. Everytime the dog bites throw it on the ground which the noise will scare the dog and relate biting to a bad experience. If all else fails do the old trick...bite the dog on the ear for dominance...I am just kidding!
I think your pup is just trying to play or maybe teething. Give him a chew toy to bite on instead of your hand! If the pup already has something in his mouth, he can't bite you or your guests.
Border Collies are herders and it's their instinct to nip at your heels. U shouldn't smack him! They are very sensitive dogs and you can make them into cringy dogs real easy if you keep doing that! Next time he nips you, grab the scruff of his neck firmly and give it a little shake, then sort of push him down like a down stay, and say NO. That's what his mother would have done. Well, except for the NO part, she would have growled at him though. She would not smack him and he doesn't understand being smacked.
my dog kept chewing up our shoes and i know this plan is stupid. but giving her a toy shoe was stupid enough to work. She has never chewed a shoe since the day we got her that shoe toy. My other dog chewed everything. I'd say that the best solutions are spraying "bitter apple spray" on his "victims." that works very well. it even helped me stop biting my nails. Another solution is those bones with cheese or peanut butter inside or "bully sticks", as well as a kong. These keep dogs content for hours. Last, your dog is probibly chewing alot because his teeth hurt. Puppies teeth hurt alot too, because they are just babies and their teeth are undeveloped and their teeth ache. I hope this helped!

Take your hand and wrap it around his muzzle and then smack your hand really hard so that it makes a loud noise. We did this to our lab only twice and he stopped biting.
Please do not smack or hit your puppy. They don't understand what this is and may just think you want to play fight with them (which is also not recommended). Also, do not push them down on the floor to become dominant. This just stresses them out and does not teach them anything. There are other, better ways to become the pack leader in the house without physical abuse.
The best way to approach a puppy biting is to ignore it. When they bite, leave the room for five seconds. Do not say anything to your puppy or touch it. Then return and continue to play (with a chew toy). Every time your puppy bites you (or anyone else) you remove your attention. This is a negative effect of their actions and they will quickly learn that for you to stay in the room, they cannot bite you.
Make sure to give your border collie lots of things to do, toys, jobs, tricks, training, etc. Border collies are extremely smart dogs and need to be kept busy. An obedience class would benefit you and your puppy. Border collies also love agility. This is a great way to get them thinking and tire them out.

Don't smack him. he's a puppy and biting is what puppies do. BUT, don't let him get away with it either. When 1 puppy bites another too hard, that puppy will let out a yelp. This tells the biter that he has bitten too hard so that next time he will not bite as hard. So when your pup bites you, do the same, yelp! Sounds like crap, but it often works.
If excitement is a problem (excited pup starts to bite so becomes more excited so bites more so...etc), then the pup needs times out. Lock him away with no stimulation for a few minutes, then go and open the door to let him out, but as you do so, turn your back and walk away. Do nothing to stimulate excitement or you will start the process off again.
Bottom line is this; training a dog not to do something actually begins with training it to do the simple things like sit/stay/come etc. Once he is doing these things well and learns that obey produces reward, he becomes more willing and able to stop doing a wrong thing like biting when told to do so. Get along to puppy pre school (do you have that in the US? surely you do!)
AND DO NOT YELL AT OR THROW CHAINS AT YOUR DOG, I am sick to death of seeing psyched out dogs because of this sort of wrong training.
Well, of you are smacking him, then "of course" that's not working. You can keep on striking your dog and end up with a very expensive behavior case, or worse, he'll have to be killed because he was taught how to be aggressive - from you.

First make sure he has fresh water at all times and food a couple of times everyday. A good puppy food is best. Lots of love, gentle petting. If the weather is nice let him run after you in the yard for exercises. Make sure you keep him in a secured back yard. They can wander out of curiosity. Also give him quiet time as puppies just like babies need their rest. To save yourself messes take him out often (when he wakes up, 20 minutes after he eats and drinks. If he hasn't had his puppy shots yet( sounds too young for that) keep him in your house and back yard. Good luck. I am sure you will do a good job.
Well you must be very mature for a responsible owner to trust you with a puppy that should not be away from the rest of the litter. This is a prime time for puppies.
When you see him drink water take him outside immediately afterwards so he doesn't pee in the house! Play with him in the yard, feed him when you were told to. If you are dog sitting, didn't the owner leave you directions?
Basically a dog is satisfied by getting their water, food, and attention. You will do just fine by doing that. The more attention and love that he gets the happier he will be. Dogs love toys so play fetch and take him out for walks. Be sure to let him get exercise so he can get all of the built up energy out! Hope this helps!
talk to the people who you are babysitting him for. ask them to give you a checklist of everything you'll need and make sure you have it, food, toys, etc etc.
talk to them about his temperament and things he likes/doesn't like.
also, make sure your house is puppy-proof. tidy away all cables and make sure he can't hurt himself on anything, eg low table corners etc. make sure he can't squeeze into tight spaces or into dangerous places e.g. living room fires etc.
you can always get your family/friends to help you out, i'm sure they won't mind!

You can't take the puppy out anywhere around other dogs. Make sure he has fresh water available.. And I guess offer him some dry food, see if he's used to that.. If he won't eat it, try adding a little water to moisten it up for him. Gotta keep him out of trouble, away from dangerous things.. Take him outside every 1/2 hour or so.. How long are you babysitting for??
Make sure he gets plenty of food, always has water, gets taken outside to potty, and give him lots of lovin and play time. Watch him carefully, pups his age can cause a lot of trouble. You two should have fun. You'll definitely find out if you ever want a puppy of your own. Good Luck!

They'd wake up with us, eat, go outside and play for 3 hours, go to sleep in their crates for 3 hours, wake up, eat, go outside and play for 3 hours and so on... until bed time for us and then they'd stay in their crates all night. Most importantly, have fun with him!

First make sure he has fresh water at all times and food a couple of times everyday. A good puppy food is best. Lots of love, gentle petting. If the weather is nice let him run after you in the yard for exercises. Make sure you keep him in a secured back yard. They can wander out of curiosity. Also give him quiet time as puppies just like babies need their rest. To save yourself messes take him out often (when he wakes up, 20 minutes after he eats and drinks. If he hasn't had his puppy shots yet( sounds too young for that) keep him in your house and back yard. Good luck. I am sure you will do a good job.
Well you must be very mature for a responsible owner to trust you with a puppy that should not be away from the rest of the litter. This is a prime time for puppies.
When you see him drink water take him outside immediately afterwards so he doesn't pee in the house! Play with him in the yard, feed him when you were told to. If you are dog sitting, didn't the owner leave you directions?
Basically a dog is satisfied by getting their water, food, and attention. You will do just fine by doing that. The more attention and love that he gets the happier he will be. Dogs love toys so play fetch and take him out for walks. Be sure to let him get exercise so he can get all of the built up energy out! Hope this helps!
talk to the people who you are babysitting him for. ask them to give you a checklist of everything you'll need and make sure you have it, food, toys, etc etc.
talk to them about his temperament and things he likes/doesn't like.
also, make sure your house is puppy-proof. tidy away all cables and make sure he can't hurt himself on anything, eg low table corners etc. make sure he can't squeeze into tight spaces or into dangerous places e.g. living room fires etc.
you can always get your family/friends to help you out, i'm sure they won't mind!

Are you sure its only 6 weeks old? At that age a puppy shouldnt even be away from the mother yet. They are not taken away till 8-9 weeks. Either way. Soft food, water and lots of love and attention. Enjoy

HELP! my dog is a golden retriever and she is soooooo lazy..she is a bit on the fat side too...she is only three months old and she doesn't like going on walks , or going out of our home.( i live in a HUGE APARTMENT) it's really big so it gives her enough space but she just doesn't like going on a walk to get some excercise or do her business. I already tried bribing her with some dog treats and pieces of apple, and her chew toy, but she was only interested the first time.please help me! i can't go cleaning her pee in the house 8 times a day! but i would like to put some effort into making her look forward to a walk.

are you sure she's not lazy but just afraid? do you know if she got hurt or scared on a previous time she was taken outside? you might have to pick her up and take her outside. you might try taking her to a lake or river and let her play in the water. gr's are water dogs so she should like it. also, instead of just taking her out to go potty try getting a tennis ball and playing out in the grassy area or take her to the park for a little bit to show her the outdoors aren't a bad place but a fun place. good luck!

Seriously they will eat diapers and other sanitary products, like pink "mice". You really have to take it out to the trash can or secure the waste baskets. I have Bloodhounds that are major dumpster divers.
You should put bitter apple or a very spicy barbaqu sauce on it before you leave.
He probably likes the way they smell. The only thing to stop that is to throw away the diapers before you go out.
Try tabasco sauce. It won't hurt him but it will make him think twice before eating another diaper. If you're opposed to this idea, get a sturdier trashcan with a lid.

My dog is a HUGE dumpster diver, too! I have a cannister trash can in the kitchen with a very heavy lid, and we HAVE to step on the pedal to raise it, it's difficult for us to even open it with our hands...so that keeps him out of the kitchen.
I no longer keep trash cans in the bedrooms, Zuke loves to chew on used tissues...gross, I know, but I can't seem to break him of that. The bathroom...that's a big problem because Zuke loves to lay in the bathtub, but he also loves to chew up the roll of toilet paper. So, I keep the trash can under the sink, and the roll of toilet paper up high on a shelf...it's a pain, but I'm willing to accommodate him since we've tried everything to get him to stop.
My dog also likes to lick dirty clothing, and not just socks and underwear...some dogs just like such things :) I'd just make sure to keep it all out of his reach :)

I have a rat terrier who is displaying some strange behavior. This started two days ago out of nowhere.She wont jump on the bed and she shakes a bit. She hasnt eaten anything that my older rat terrier hasnt had and she is only 2 yrs old. I have been the only one handling her and she is physically fine from the exterior. She goes outside and kinda crys a bit and backs up, like walking backward. She will then sit down or lie down on the ground. She seems ok sometimes and she occasionally plays with her toys. She is ok one minute and seems uneasy the next. She sleeps in the bed with me and seemed to have slept fine last night. She was acting odd again about 10 min after gettting up this morning. She is now lying on the bed with my other dog and is fine. Just lying there content. No shaking, no issues. She has been eating a little bit and is still using the bathroom with no diarreah. I would like an answer to this if anyone has an idea. I am traveling out of town and dont have a vet here.

X-ray would be needed to view the back and steroids/anti-inflammatories to take out the swelling. The second thing is perhaps a bladder/kidney infection. Usually you see frequent attempts to urinate with that though. No matter what town you're in, there's usually a vet somewhere. Pull out the yellow pages and take it to the vet. You are obligated to provide your pet with veterinary care, if not by law, then out of proper moral obligation.
From the description you are providing this dog is displaying very common and classic signs of pain. Some how the dog has hurt itself, could be anything, back problem with the spine and cord. Maybe something internal such as a blocked intestine in which case the dog needs emergency medical attention. This dog is in pain.
If she's shaking the problem could be neurological and will only get worst if left untreated but we are not veterinarians so we can't help you or give you advice. The only one who can is your vet so the best thing to do is take her.
I had a dog that was a diabetic that acted like that.

You say you are traveling. Some dogs do not travel as well as others. Is this the first time you have taken your friends with you? How are you traveling? Did you fly? There are so many variables that you do not mention. With a dog as active and intelligent (and young) as your Rat Terrier it could be stress or boredom. The trembling and whining does not occur when she is feeling secure( in bed with you or with the other dog.) Try to be reassuring when the trembling starts. Sit and hold him/her and see if that helps. I do not know how long you will be away from you vet. but if this continues I would get there ASAP.

For instence if you put any animals face in a paper sack they will display that behavior every time.

I want to give my Chihuahua a long healthy life. She is now 4 months. And well I want to know what I can do to give her the best health possible without taking it to far. I saw that pets stores sell vitamins and other things to keep them healthy. What do you all suggest I get to keep her healthy? I want to get her some sort of vitamins that will keep her bones strong. As well as her heart strong. I want her coat to be shiny and soft as well. Do they make moisturizer for dogs? I want to put something on her paws/tummy to make them soft. Any suggestions?

Okay, I'm glad you want the best for your new family member. That's what they are, family members. I've been in the owning, showing, breeding, raising of dogs for now over 16 years. My grandfather had his own vet clinic when I was a kid. My brother works with about a hundred dogs a day. I can help you.
Chihuahuas have long lives as it is. They are the longest living dog. Anything with chihuahua in it will live to be at least 14 years old. So right there you're set.
I would start with food. Look at the ingredients on the package. If there is corn anywhere in the ingredients... don't get it. Corn is not healthy (Science Diet will say otherwise... but they are only trying to sell the food) for human or animal (unless you are a cow that needs to be fattened up). Ask your local pet store for a premium brand dog food. They use the best meat. Humans eat a Grade A meat, Premium dog foods use a Grade B meat, Grocery brand foods (Dog Chow, Kibbles'n'Bits,etc.) use a Grade C meat or by-products (aka leftovers). I would stay away from beef. Beef has too much hormones in it that dogs are becoming allergic to beef. Stick with chicken, lamb, fish, turkey, etc. If you pup has sensitive skin or a skin pigment (look under the fur... the skin will be off colored in parts), I would stick with lamb. With a good food you won't have to worry about vitamins. She is small, they really have a lot of bone density issues. Make sure she doesn't jump off anything until she is at least a year old. Then only off sofa levels. Nothing higher. Keep her up to date on her vet checks. The vet will be giving you some heartguard. That will help to prevent from some problems. It also depends on her genetics. She should have a soft coat until she turns somewhere between a year and two. Then her adult fur will come in and it will be a little more on the course side. It's still soft I think. Keeping it shiny is also based on the food. Also on the grooming. Do not bathe her everyday. A couple times a month is good. More than that only if absolutely needed. Otherwise there will be skin flaking issues. There are conditioners for dogs... scented as well. Choose the one your groomer and you like best. Don't put anything on her paws and tummy unless advised by your vet. You don't want her paws to crack and get sore... but you don't want them to be so soft that she can't walk on sidewalks either. She can take the tough sidewalks and rocky grounds. Talk with your vet on what you can do to keep them from cracking. It's hell to get them healed. I also suggest you get her into some puppy classes. As a puppy these classes are for socialization and education (your education). Then you can move into obedience classes when she is 6 months. They eat it and swallow it and then it get lodged in their system and plugs them up. I know, I've had to remove rawhide from a dog's rectum because she got plugged up. Natural bones and toys are best for her.

Okay, I'm glad you want the best for your new family member. That's what they are, family members. I've been in the owning, showing, breeding, raising of dogs for now over 16 years. My grandfather had his own vet clinic when I was a kid. My brother works with about a hundred dogs a day. I can help you.
Chihuahuas have long lives as it is. They are the longest living dog. Anything with chihuahua in it will live to be at least 14 years old. So right there you're set.
I would start with food. Look at the ingredients on the package. If there is corn anywhere in the ingredients... don't get it. Corn is not healthy (Science Diet will say otherwise... but they are only trying to sell the food) for human or animal (unless you are a cow that needs to be fattened up). Ask your local pet store for a premium brand dog food. They use the best meat. Humans eat a Grade A meat, Premium dog foods use a Grade B meat, Grocery brand foods (Dog Chow, Kibbles'n'Bits,etc.) use a Grade C meat or by-products (aka leftovers). I would stay away from beef. Beef has too much hormones in it that dogs are becoming allergic to beef. Stick with chicken, lamb, fish, turkey, etc. If you pup has sensitive skin or a skin pigment (look under the fur... the skin will be off colored in parts), I would stick with lamb. With a good food you won't have to worry about vitamins. She is small, they really have a lot of bone density issues. Make sure she doesn't jump off anything until she is at least a year old. Then only off sofa levels. Nothing higher. Keep her up to date on her vet checks. The vet will be giving you some heartguard. That will help to prevent from some problems. It also depends on her genetics. She should have a soft coat until she turns somewhere between a year and two. Then her adult fur will come in and it will be a little more on the course side. It's still soft I think. Keeping it shiny is also based on the food. Also on the grooming. Do not bathe her everyday. A couple times a month is good. More than that only if absolutely needed. Otherwise there will be skin flaking issues. There are conditioners for dogs... scented as well. Choose the one your groomer and you like best. Don't put anything on her paws and tummy unless advised by your vet. You don't want her paws to crack and get sore... but you don't want them to be so soft that she can't walk on sidewalks either. She can take the tough sidewalks and rocky grounds. Talk with your vet on what you can do to keep them from cracking. It's hell to get them healed. I also suggest you get her into some puppy classes. I need more info on pits?
i dont want to buy a pit from a backyard breeder and i dont know who's a good breeder. i also dont know anything about bloodlines, like which is less dog agressive, please help!

Go to any local shelter many of them they do not euthanize because there are still places they can live. People that work at shelters often try to save them from he blue juice. We get calls constantly someone trying to save this or that. Many workers take dogs home to save them.
There are tons of pit rescues!! Rescue one, they are usually fostered in someones home with their families and other pets to get a definite on their personality and disposition. They will set you up with the ones that fit you and your lifestyle.

Poodles were once used in the military before GSD. A standard poodle is quite a force to be reconed with. And I would be more likely to rough house witha pit than a standard poodle. Their hair grows to prtect them when in fights and in murky war conditions. Don't ever underestimate one.

Aggression is all in the way the dog is raised. With love, attention and the proper dicipline, you pit will be a wonderful pet. Pits get a very bad name because back yard breeders breed them to fight. Pits have the ability to be the most lovable, protecting and norturing animals just as any other pet. The only difference between a pit and any other dog is their strength. They are all muscle. so its very important to get them trained early so you can handle them.
Also some shelters only adopt pits so they can give them a 2nd chance. If you go through a shelter, its much cheaper and they can give you really good advice on caring for them. Petfinder will help you with that. Its all shelters.
also, they need alot of exercise, not just walking but alot of running. Obediance training is a good idea with any dog. I took mine to petsmart. It was $100 for 8 sessions. My little girl is an angel and always on her best behavior. She even gets along with my 2 cats!

I really suggest staying away from breeders and adopting instead. They do have puppies listed a lot of times, because many times whole litters of pit bull puppies wind up in foster care, as they were dumped at local shelters because they either did not sell or the owners got into trouble.
Human aggression in pit bull breeds is NEVER allowable!! Many of the breeders nowadays are breeding human aggressive dogs, and this is part of the large downfall of the pit bull breeds. Avoid low and wides, big headed dogs, and people who sell you on the size of the dogs head...dogs bred to be huge, blocky, short and squatty are badly inbred, or mixes that should never have been bred to being with.
Dogs like this have lots of emotional and health problems due to the poor breeding and the greed to make a quick buck off of a fad that their makers have.

That is too much information to sum up in 1 post. The dog's appearance, size, weight, coat, and details of their physical appearance standards vary depending on the breed you are showing. In the US, your dog must be registered to be shown in most rings. The technicalities will probably be different in your country.
For obedience, you will want to do some basic leash training, so your dog will run/walk with you when they have you do your rounds, so they can check the dogs walk and posture.
The dog's age will depend on the breed. Basically they just need to be of adult age. Older dogs don't tend to do as well, as the signs of aging are "undesirable" traits.

That is too much information to sum up in 1 post. The dog's appearance, size, weight, coat, and details of their physical appearance standards vary depending on the breed you are showing. In the US, your dog must be registered to be shown in most rings. The technicalities will probably be different in your country.
For obedience, you will want to do some basic leash training, so your dog will run/walk with you when they have you do your rounds, so they can check the dogs walk and posture.
The dog's age will depend on the breed. Basically they just need to be of adult age. Older dogs don't tend to do as well, as the signs of aging are "undesirable" traits.
If you plan on showing your dog, you will need to invest a LOT of time researching and grooming. Most people that show their dogs are breeders too, so they can try to breed the "perfect dog". Those judges are real tough on every detail. What they are looking for is the dog that most matches the breed's standard in every aspect.

They have breed information and other weblinks that you should read before picking out your new puppy. Things like things that may be problematic in adulthood. If you care about show quality or any of that stuff, read the info before and dog purchase. I had a friend that bought a show quality dog but later found out the dog had an overbite that disqualified the dog for shows. He paid top dollar for the dog too. be careful. also check out these too.

Well, I have one %26 she is 9years old now. I can tell you that I love her to death, %26 she is the best dog I've ever had ! Boxers are smart, they learn fast, loving, good with kids. Mariha carrie is my boxer, she helped me care for my four kids %26 my grandkids I have 10 grandkids .She put up with a lot of ***** with them all. They are very hipper tho, %26 very stubbern. I don't have anything bad to say about Boxers. They are the best dog to get if you have kids %26 if you want a loving dog %26 loyal dog.
When Mariha go's to the big sky, I will get another one . Make sure you have lots of toys for the pup to play with, they do like to chew, and lots of room to run.. I've had lots of dogs in my life time I'm 51. My Boxer is the best dog I've had ! I have four other dogs that are not boxers, she's still top dog to me.

P.S. yes Boxer do have hip problems, %26 over bites. ''BUT",
so does alot of other breeds. If you only want the pup for a pet, who care if it has a over bite ? About the hips, check them before you buy the pup. Find out if it run in the pups family or not. My brother had a Boxer, "NO" Hip problems %26 my Boxer no problems. Also you can see if the pup has a over bite before you buy the pup. Also you can look at the mom %26 dad if they have him too.

my dog hates a bath. but we r taking her 2 a family vacation spot. but she is scared of water. how can we get her 2 stop being so scared of water? thanks.

Well I had a dog scared to death of water. Do you have a pool or somewhere you can take him to swim with you? We went to the lake to start out and I walked him in just to get his feet wet. He sure didn't like it but I made him stay there. I laid down in the water and was petting him for awhile and then we walked alittle further out and further out. Before you knew it we were swimming out there. Now everytime that we go swimming in the pool hes right there with us swimming all over the place. You just have to show him that you are going to protect him and keep him safe until he builds his confidence. Good luck!!

what breed is she. n try baby steps in puddles where she fills safe and secure. even use her fav toys. i had same prob w my golden lab at one x now he nose dives 4 his toys. i asked what breed cause some breed will not do will w water at all good luck

What you should be doing is rewarding her when she does what is required and "punishing" it if she doesn't. Train the dog, help it learn by conditioning it. That is simply rewarding or "punishing" its actions so us to make it learn.
Try a wading pool in the yard. Fill it up while acting really excited about the whole thing. Sit in it yourself and call the dog to join you. Bribe her with treats. Once she is in the water, make a huge fuss over her. This process worked so well on my blind chihuahua that she now makes a bee-line for my pond and waterfall in the backyard every time I open the back door! She swims until I go out and get her. She still hates taking a bath, but swimming is a whole different thing!

We decided enough is enough. We took her out to a warm lake with a long lead on. We coaxed her in closer and closer. We got her walking on the shore. After a couple of trips out we got her to swim. The trick was me going out deeper and going underwater - she swam out to rescue me. Fortunately, her weakness is pepperoni sticks - it took 2 bags, but now she swims fine.
Make it fun for her. Don't try to force her to like the water. Does she like chasing a ball, stick, etc.?? If you plan to get in the water, throw a ball toward the water encouraging her to retrieve it while you both run towards it into the water. Try to make a game out of it without any force. Have fun on your vacation and GOOD LUCK!!

I need help...My dog is bleeding?
Okay..I have a 2 year old bichon frise FEMALE...who accidentally scratched to hard and is bleeding from the left ear..at the end...It's a small scratch..but everytime she shakes..a lot blood comes out...I don't think she needs stiches...I have been washing it..I passed a little rubbing alcohol..I even held it tight to see if the bleeding stops which it does but when she shakes her head hard..it continues to bleed...How can I heal this? The vets are closed..the one next to me is closed down..And I don't want to go to the ASPCA thinking I did some damage to her

The ASPCA won't think you hurt her, they know the difference between animal abuse and too-hard scratching!
Ears do take ages to stop bleeding because of being flicked around. She might need a stitch, or she might need a bandage.
Ear bandages are difficult to do, I wouldn't really advise trying one yourself at home - you have to bandage the ear to the head, and if it's too loose it'll come off in a second, but if it's too tight the dog won't be able to breathe!
If you're really unable to find a vet, here are some ear-bandage instructions.

Take the bandage off tomorrow and if that ear is still bleeding you'll have no choice but to get her to a vet.

I would also advise finding out the source of this scratch - at a minimum your dog needs a nail clip so she can't do this again. If she's scratching a lot she needs proper flea treatment - i.e from the vets not the pet shop.

This may sound ridiculous, but it is a serious response. Super glue=) I use it myself when I have a cut somewhere delicate like on the palm of my hand. I promise it will work, and in a few days it will dissolve, and by then the scratch will be healed!=)
I'm no expert but..the skin on the ears is very thin, so I would imagine that any bleeding would not stop quickly. Perhaps you could try holding it tight for a longer time, until a scab/clot can form - but honestly, if your that concerned about it, you should get her to the Vet (an emergency client maybe?) try calling them, they may be able to assist over the phone. Again, I am no expert.
If you have done nothing wrong, then you shouldn't be worried about taking the dog to the ASPCA, and having the wound looked at. By not going to the ASPCA, and the dog needs attention, you are guilty of not providing for the animal, and the ASPCA needs to be notified of you.
DO NOT USE SUPER GLUE. it will infect the scratch. try an emergency vet.
If you give it a good rinse and can look at it well and see that she doesn't need stitches, let her shake blood but don't let her scratch and leave it alone! It will clot. If it doesn't stop bleeding, she may need a stitch or two, so off the vet you go. Remember that it may heal fine on it's own, but may look like a V or slit in her ear. If you don't want that then she has to go to the vet. If it was you, I'd say try superglue or go to the pharmacy for "new skin" (similar to superglue). However, she can't say OMG that burns.

Dogs bleed pretty good from their ears, It will clot and stop soon. If she keeps opening the wound you might get one of those stupid looking cones that keeps their feet away from their face... She is not going to bleed to death from her ears.
Don't ever use Alcohol on a open wound!! Have you ever used Alcohol on your self? It burns like _ _ _ _ !
Try putting a piece of ice on the area that should help with the bleeding and the pain. Don't keep the ice on the area for very long! Just do it for a few seconds then keep repeating ever so often until the bleeding stops.
Try to get your dog in your lap to lay down while you are applying the ice.
If it is still bleeding by tomorrow then take the dog to the Vet.
The ice should stop the bleeding.
P.S.
Wrap the ice in a wet wash cloth before applying it to the ear.
Oh gosh. Poor thing. I would suggest getting a pad like a nail polish remover/make up pad and taping it to her ear. Until the vets opens back up, of course. They're not that combersome. The comment above is a good idea as well - superglue. Definitely try to keep putting pressure on that ear, though. Good luck, I hope you get this figured out!
As long as it is clotting, and it's not a huge scratch, it should be fine. Don't use rubbing alcohol on her b/c it burns. If you have Neosporin, that will help keep it from getting infected. Just keep an eye on it and dab the blood away if it is still coming out. If it keeps bleeding when she is shaking her head try to keep her busy... Peanut butter in a Kong always works for my dogs.
Good luck... and if it is still bleeding after a while, don't feel embarrassed to bring your dog into the ASPCA. They would rather you bring her in than let her keep bleeding. You might also be able to find an emergency vet clinic around you. I know when my vet is closed they have the number to the (not so) near by emergency clinic. I had to call them once, and they were able to talk me through the problem without me have to drive down there.
Yes torn ears bleed profusely and are hard to stop. If its only a small i.e. less than 1/8" you can glue it. They make skin glue just for this purpose. Make sure you have the bleeding stoped when you apply it or it won't stick and you'll end up with a mess.

Is the blood definitely caused by the scratch? Sometimes ear mites cause damage in the ear which cause a cat to scratch, so there might be some other internal problems to consider.
An ear infection can spread and it can cause misery to the cat, so a vet needs to deal with this.
